  • In 1996, Pioneer wanted to compete with Ghost in the Shell and decided that the best way to do so was to re-cut an OVA they licensed just last year and give it all star cast. What follows is a thought-provoking cyberpunk narrative involving country music, feminism and Elizabeth Berkley.

Ahh, Armitage. I vividly remember reading about cyberpunk anime back in the 90s and this one was on the list along Cyber City Oedo, GITS, Bubblegum Crisis and some others. I had to wait almost a decade until I gained access to these movies (bless the internets) and now I felt like rewatching them. I'm so glad to report that they didn't loose any charm for me in the last 15 years. Still love their aesthetic, these metallic blueish cities, the blinking and whirring tech they use, the guns, the cars... It's just so 90s and so awesome. This will be forever my favorite flavor of cyberpunk, the one with CRT screens and people hooked up by wires to the Cyberspace.

Oh man, how refreshing it is to see a video where someone isn't crapping all over this anime. Have you thought of changing the title to this video? I came upon it completely by fluke searching for tracks from the armitage soundtrack. This deserves 100k views!
Your interpretation of the feminist angle to the story is fascinating, I never really thought about it that way. It's such a crime this and the OVA haven't been released on Bluray....

I think the part that I find interesting about this movie is how the Third-types can get pregnant, which thins the line between human and robot. It is something that was not touched on in the original Blade Runner movie, which heavily inspired this movie, but later added to the sequel Blade Runner 2049 where it is revealed the two characters from the original had a baby together. I think this aspect makes this movie very interesting particularly with the back drop of social and political tension that exists in this movie. Also another interesting plot point I see is the fact most of the female Thirds are often in the creative fields such as music, art, and literature, which is something the other designs don't seem to be capable of. To do something like this means you need to have a mind of your own, so it would also be an incentive for the villains to want to get rid of these robots who might end up creating a distinct Martian identity the Earth's movements do not want.

Honestly stories that have something to say are probably the least likely to get rebooted in anyway meaningful currently, because it's too easy to offend someone when you try to deal with issues that people can see themselves in and Armitage was for the time it came out was touching on some issues that might have seemed like sci-fi then, but would certainly be recognizable now.

I now got to know this thanks to the Beast in Black song Moonlight Rendezvous. The band's guitarist songwriter is a fan of anime, likely old ones, though I know his tastes are different from mine and others. That being said, I get to discover another good 90s anime. Armitage III may not be my most favorite and cyberpunk may not be my most preferred genre, but it is kind of interesting and still good in it's way; having that 90s cyberpunk goodness.

I distinctively remember D'anclaude coming back every time he was defeated, and thinking how terrifying such a villain like him was to have resources and couldn't just die. I was too young to follow the story and was struggling to stay awake though, so I had thought he was just some rich bad guy lmao.

I wonder if we need another cyberpunk anime, movie or game in which robots are replacing humans in the workforce but it's pointed out that it's what the intention because robots could work 24/7 without complaining, demand unionization or even pay, something capitalists dream of for centuries. Maybe have one disgruntled human destroy a robot but is then flatout denied his job back and is blacklisted.

I love Armitage III … It still remains a favorite… My first exposure to it wasn't on SciFi Channel like so many others because I was a very poor student at the time I came across it and didn't have TV of any kind-but that's what a computer is for, right? Bought the DVD when a guy at the store recommended not because I was such a fan of Ghost in the Shell (which I am), but because of my love for the 2nd anime I ever saw… Bubblegum Crisis. (Haven't looked but surely you've done a video on the story behind that one-it's QUITE a story!)
Dual-Matrix is good, but I'm not sure it lives up to the original. Would love to see proper treatment to the OVA though. I don't think it ever got a proper blu-ray release. Actually I don't know if any of the Armitage III stuff ever did.

While Ghost in the Shell came out AFTER, I saw that first at a friend's house many moons ago. It wasn't until years later that I rented Poly-Matrix from Blockbuster (remember that place?!) And I instantly fell in love with it and actually preferred it over GitS. Wasn't until way later that I discovered that Jack Bauer and Jessie Spano were the voices and was kinda my first anime where Hollywood did anime voices. Doing the vocal comparisons between the OVA and Poly, boy there is a huge difference. That scene with Armitage having her breakdown works better with Elizabeth because of the scene where Jessie gets hooked on those caffeine pills.
Great video. Hope Dual-Matrix gets reviewed, even if my memories of it were...not terribly favorable.

Sci-Fi showed it on their anime weekend or whatever, which is what originally got me into anime. I went out and bought the movie a few years later and was surprised to see it had quite a bit of nudity in it. Made it impossible to pass around in conservative Christian circles.
But note that the movie got the future exactly right, except that Earth is like Mars. Women might as well not exist for men.
Also literally every school of feminism is toxic and reduces birth rates. Matriarchy is a fever dream of masochistic males and subversive destroyers who think they can survive without a host civilization.

Everyone's latching on to the "feminist" thing in their reviews. This I believe is probably a translation issue.
Mars is a colony and most colonies in history have been primarily founded and settled by men. Without women, there's not really a way to have a continued population, hence the need for the 3rds, and the designs of the 2nds as primarily eye candy.
Earth is ideological in their views of humanity first, which is also the current sentiment on Mars, (hence the protests and so on. It's why there's so many anti-android sentiments in the populace, ect).
Mars is happy to rejoin with Earth (that is primarily female, not feminist), but they're trying to get rid of their dirty secret of the 3rds.
Armitage is a truly underappreciated classic and has many themes and ideas that are ahead of its time and amazingly different. (bio-punk in the firsts through 4ths, the terraforming, and the whole child bearing androids posing an existential threat theme got revisited in Bladerunner 2049).

Exactly ! And no matter how one tries to spin it, TERF's are defined as feminists; just like the radical right are still considered Republicans. Armitage is simply doing what good sci-fi is supposed to do and extrapolating a possible future based on current conditions. How someone chooses to interpret it really says more about the person interpreting it, and artists and creators really can't be worried about that, or we'd never get art that tackled tough issues, because there'd always be sacred cows somebody considered to be beyond question.

But it is a fact that somehow, WB completely sold out and flushed away all of their many years of animation history and legacy with the Looney Tunes down the toilet, just to make an awful, forced, cringe-packed full-length, theatrically released basketball shoe commercial.... and it somehow became a 'beloved classic')

She voiced by Elizabeth berkley (i love her on saved by the Bell and showgirls). She's Jessie spano and Nomi Malone turns into Sora takenouchi from Digimon tri as Naomi armitage. Shinji ikari wants her. She's pretty hot.

In my head, I was thinking that was likely the reason that the male Third was created, though I didn't see any discussion of that. A sort of prototype model for helping to create offspring with human women. I'm new to the movie and the series, so if there's further evidence to support what I've supposed, I have yet to uncover it.

I know this is me nitpicking you for essentially being "too well read" (i.e. using a word you have only encountered in print and GASP pronouncing it incorrectly! Honestly, how dare you???) but when you say "sow" you're pronouncing it like the animal, what you want to say is the version of the word that sounds exactly like "sew" but is spelled "sow" and means "to spread" sorry, rant over.

The word Edgy itself is overrated, immediately loses it's impactful meaning the moment it's mentioned.

I'd say calling this anime a classic is an exaggeration. This series doesn't have nearly enough time to develop its themes properly, it should have lasted for at least 10 episodes.
