  • Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 12 miles northwest of central London, is the town of Borehamwood.
The existence of Borehamwood goes back to the 12th century or earlier. According to a written account from 1188, Pope Clement "gave to the Abbey the wood of Boreham for the feeding of the swine". Historically it was part of the parish of Elstree (Elstree being the name of the neighbouring village immediately to its west).
From the 1920s onwards, Borehamwood and the neighbouring village of Elstree have become known for being home to several film studios, with many shots of its streets included in final cuts of 20th century British films. This earned it the nickname of 'British Hollywood'.
Borehamwood saw a significant increase in population following the Second World War. As part of a scheme to relocate Londoners whose homes had been destroyed in the Blitz, many new houses and shops were built in the town. Its frequent train services from Elstree and Borehamwood station to central London via the Midland Main Line have made it a popular choice for commuters working in the capital.
Many well-known movies were partially filmed at the former Associated British Studios on Shenley Road just east of the town centre. These include The Dam Busters (1955), Moby Dick (1956), Summer Holiday (1963), Dr Zhivago (1965)', 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), The Shining (1980), the first three Indiana Jones movies and the first three Star Wars movies. George Lucas helped save Elstree Studios from closure on two separate occasions: first in 1976 by choosing Elstree as a base for the production of Star Wars, and second in 1988 when he and Steven Spielberg acted as patrons to the Save Our Studios campaign.
Whilst most of the film studios of the industry's heyday have now closed, two still remain: Elstree Studios and the BBC Elstree Centre. Despite the names, both are located in Borehamwood. Many well-known TV programmes have been filmed here including Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing, to name a few. The Big Brother house was built on top of the studios' old underwater stage where scenes in The Dam Busters and Moby Dick were filmed.
Borehamwood is represented in sport by Boreham Wood Football Club. Founded in 1948, they play their home games at Meadow Park immediately to the north of Elstree Studios.

If you walked in Borehamwood between 1968 to 1973 you would be able to see On the Buses filmed.
Definitely a great sitcom. Never get tired watching On the Buses.

Definitely nothing wrong with foreigners coming here to live.
Just as long they are willing to work and pay their way.
Which they do. Very good hard workers! Doing jobs that people here wouldn't take.

Thankyou for uploading this video! This is my hometown and since moving to Kent I've been ever so homesick! This has made me rather happy but sad as I'd do anything to be back there.

Some real nostalgia for me, as I worked in offices along Elstree Way '77-83. Went back quite a few times in intervening years, as I liked the Tesco built on the old studios. There was a great electronics junk shop up the far end. I bought an old keyboard from god-knows-what ancient teletype machine, and used it for my first microcomputer, the MK14. Nice to see my first bank is still there, Barclays, where I cashed my first cheque. Used to be a nice bookshop, but think it's gone now.

The town is known as Boreham Wood if you don't mind, it's the fault of the sign writer at the train station who could not fit the whole name on the space they gave him, fact

You may well be right. I only learned about the two-word spelling last night after their FA Cup heroics! Still, you could make the case that place names are always evolving over time due to misspellings that stuck, for instance.
