Him being given the ring back and hearing the distant echo of Christine's singing as she exits the cave and a tear rolls down his cheek is one of the most powerfully cinematic moments I have ever seen. It's in that moment that he realises that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. The most vital piece of his music and life is truly gone and he is condemned to spend the rest of his life contending with that heartbreak. Such a powerful moment.
"...that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. " That's a magnificent analysis, thank you!
Gerard should have won an Oscar that year. He shredded my heart and all I wanted was for him (the Phantom) to find love. He's an incredible actor to wrench that kind of emotion out of me.
If I could describe Erik in a sentence, I'd say "A bad man, but not a heartless man." He does bad things for bad reasons, but there's something worth crying for in that tortured soul.
Yeah... The thing is, I could really empathize with Erik when I was younger. I sometimes felt like someone should like me because things were difficult for me and I felt like no one understood. I realized, though, that we cannot confuse love with pity. I feel for him, really. His life is so, tragic. Like a child, he latched onto the first person who seemed to understand him, listen to him, and not see him as a monster. He became obsessed, only knowing darkness and shunning, but even I cannot excuse his actions. Manipulation, murder, kidnapping. It isn't excusable, but I would be lying if I said I did not feel sorry for him and the way his life turned out. At least in the end, for a moment, someone showed they cared, and his lustful, controlling, desperate love, in the end, became a sacrificial, selfless love. He let her go, even to the man who to him, took her away from him. He understood himself, that although he was able to live in a fantasy for the moment, she couldn't stay with him. He had truly gone past the point of no return, people were hunting him down, and she wouldn't be happy being locked up in his fantasy. Fortunately, years later, I found the love of my life, and her middle name actually is Christine. That's why I call her my angel. Heaven-sent, a girl who understands me and loves me for the man I am and the man I am trying to become. This love drives me to want to be a better person. It's amazing how much you can learn from literature and life among other things.
Pretty much. He basically lived the life equivalent to that of an abused child. He was beaten by a man and labeled as “the devil’s child”. When Meg’s mother (back then a young girl) brought Erik to the the basement of the opera house he then lived alone in the dark. He had no decent human interaction with anyone for his entire life. He had music to confide in and that’s all. It’s no wonder the phantom had a twisted personality.
@@TayoEXE Thank you for typing everything that you did. I completely agree with all of it. When I was younger, I identified with the Phantom. Being bullied for a stutter I was born with and had no mastery of, it was very difficult to make and keep friends, and cripplingly difficult to talk with girls. I especially like what you had to say about the difference between being loved and being pitied. Far too often youngsters confuse the two, and just desire acceptance, sometimes through drastic means. While I don't have a wife (and am in no rush to settle), I am eager to find a woman who loves me just the way I am and look forward to reciprocating that exponentially. Today I am an accomplished public speaker, up-and-coming children's book author, and in the middle of creating a nonprofit to help people before CPS open the case on them. I like to think that it started from listening to The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack as a kid and identifying with the tragic villain. How can we help people if we don't explore what made them?
They way he sang "Masquerade... paper faces on parade... masquerade... hide your face... so the world... will never... find you..." broke my heart. He shattered himself from the world because of his physical appearance. Then he goes off "Christine... I love you..." then she went near him giving him so much hope only to return the ring back which took the hope away from him. My heart melted. It's just so shattering.
Daniella Orbe no she gave him the ring to promise herself to him, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote a book abt what happens next and in the book after things calm down she returns to him but ends up having to leave bc she and Erik know that he can't give her a life
Marissa Klein Yeah, they do the uh oh spaghettios the night of Christine’s wedding and have a little itty bitty baby boy, and then Christine dies and Raoul fucks off and The Phantom’s like “well I’m Dad now”
The part where Erik is singing with the music box made me bawl my eyes out. He looks so sweet and innocent there; a man truly undeserving of his fate. I'd love to give him a hug.
Me too. I was so lonely when I was young. When 'the creature of darkness' looks at the music box with a monkey, the scene is highly relatable. I cry heavily heavily every time I watch him with this music box monkey... Learn to be lonely, never dreamt out in the world there are arms to hold you..
@@patraaurum369 I'm almost 40 and I'm going through this. I cry every time I see this scene. I had a fiance once upon a time... Someone loved me. I told her to go and forget about me. She could do better. Thankfully, she did. She's happy now. I made the sacrifice so she'd be happier and I'll sit with my music box to keep me company. That was almost fifteen years ago.
In the 25th anniversary version, the phantom smiled and said "Christine, I love you..." AFTER she gave him the ring, and you can see Christine's face instantly saddens and she kissed his hands in tears. I like it better because it hardens the fact that the phantom learned to love with pure heart: after knowing she didn't came back to stay with him, he wasn't full of rage like he always did before; on the contrary, he smiled at her in the most genuine and heart warming way and let her go in calmness.
The saddest part that gets me every time is that he finally finds out what real love is when it’s too late, letting her go was the biggest example in the musical that he truly realized what love meant. And the movie made the nice touch of Raul seeing the rose with the ring on it on her grave, symbolizing he still loved her even after all that time magnificent writing.
A lot of people say Gerard isn't a good singer... Maybe he's not the most talented but he definitely has a nice voice... But his acting is amazing and the best
his acting makes his singing better to me. when he sings "christine I love you" it sounded so raw and i just want to go cry in a hole. Idk i really liked his voice in it, even though i know most people dont
JulietteMarie I thought his singing was pretty solid. I mean, it’s no Michael Crawford or Ramin Karimloo, but I think it’s good (but as an overall actor, he’s probably the best).
I REALLY want to know what Gerard’s audition looked like. He’s obviously not the best singer, but I LOVE the...powerful vulnerability he brings to Phantom. Love him lots
He was chosen by the director for his rock vocals but had to audition in front of webber, Shumacher wanted to appeal to a younger audience. I think he did great
Through it all, I could never hate the Phantom/Erik because of what he went through as a child due to his appearance, being shunned and hated by society that he never knew how to show real love and compassion to anyone. I could always feel his pain, rage, jealousy, and loneliness. I've been in his footsteps before. Though I never killed anyone, I imagined it. A true tragic villain the phantom is, my heart breaks for him every time.
Disneyfan82 I agree, not gonna lie, my heart always shatters sane way cause of how Ive gone through almost the same pain, I never killed anyone but I feel the pain since I was a young teen, even til this day it hurts a bit still
Disneyfan82 I'm sure you know what it's liked to have a birth defect that caused you to be abandoned by your mother, never knowing your father loved you, being locked in a cage and be laughed by society and to live in the sewers for your entire life.
That's the Phantom's true name. The Phantom of the Opera wasn't originally a musical, It was a book written by Gaston Leroux. Although I would suggest you read Susan Kay's 'Phantom' it goes a lot more into the phantom's character and early life. The books are a little long, but definitely worth the read!
I think Gerard Butler really hit it out of the park with his performance. Holding his own with singers like Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson was no easy task.
Howling Burd19 oh, please. I can name several phantoms off the top of my head that out act butler, no contest. Let's face it, he has so many fangirls cause he's hot.
Lily Luna but Gerald Butler’s an actor; if those Phantoms can act out Butler, than they wouldn’t be doing musical. And Butler’s not even my favorite, I’m just telling the truth.
To everyone saying she didn’t choose the Phantom, she actually did. She puts on his ring and kisses him. When she is smiling at him after, happy to choose him, he can’t stop crying. He realizes he can’t do this to her and TELLS HER TO LEAVE WITH RAOUL. When she comes back to return his ring, she still lingers a bit, not wanting to leave. The Phantom knows he isn’t emotionally stable enough for a relationship with Christine, he knows he couldn’t handle it. And he finally has his character arc at the end. They both do.
Yes and no! He was emotionally stable to seduce her all the way and afterward he starts realizing he is not good for her. Not very gentleman like - he could have made his choice before becoming intimate. After intimacy acting the way he does is nothing else than just him being dramatic. We do not know what the next day after this scene would bring, but I don't think he really ended it there!
This scene really proved to me that Christine loved the Phantom somehow, when she kisses him she does it twice (In front of her fiance I might add). One kiss would have caused the same result, the first one was for him, the second one was for her.
Because he is a murderer, because he is not a good man, because as much and as strongly as he loved her he loved himself more. Relationships don't always end because a couple doesn't love each other. Phantoms love for Christine was his only redeeming quality and it just wasn't enough.
I personally wouldn’t even bash him for his signing. Considering he’s one of the few members of the cast who has no background in trained singing his performance blew me away!
@@Meeowwzterz and yet he somehow trained Christine to replace the primadonna of the Paris opera??? No it doesn't make logical sense. In fact, Butler's inability to sing is the most nonsensical part of the movie
This has been my favorite movie of all time since I was little and I’ve watched it over and over again. What I just saw for the first time that I never noticed is at 0:24 when she sings “you are not alone”, she puts the ring that he gave her on her finger before she kisses him. This gave this scene a whole deeper meaning and I’m crying. I believe she truly loved him, different from the love she feels for Raoul.
True true. I think that Raoul and the Phantom, Eric, both loved her, but in different ways. But I do truly believe that the phantom loved Christine the most
Incredible! I just saw it! It changes so much in this scene! And gives a whole different look at the motive of her kiss. I still could not understand when & why she to put on this ring ?? But this subtle & significant detail gave the explanations for these questions! Once again, many thanks for your observation and for pointing out the important detail in this scene!
He shatters the mirrors one by one, finally completely smashing through the last one, as if he is erasing or rejecting his appearance, his life or existence as he has tried to create it. He steps on the broken glass, through the broken mirror, dropping the candlestick, symbolizing what little light he has held onto, and steps into the darkness beyond as the curtain falls behind him. He has passed beyond, further into darkness and isolation.
i watched the movie when i was 9 and i always told everyone that the phantom shattering the mirrors was my favorite part due to the symbolism... there is so much meaning behind him shattering it and it just makes me cry everytime.
This scene always kills me. Because it's here that we see that the phantom really IS a good person. He just... was never taught how to act in society. He was hidden down there as a child by Madam Giry, and that pretty much ended his contact with the mortal world. She was the only one who knew about him, and I highly doubt she taught him how to act in the mortal world. She seem like a very, "stay safe, don't stray farther than what you already have" kind of person. She'd keep him alive and pretty much keep him alive, but everything else, the Phantom had to learn himself. How to speak, sing, act, write, design, dress, all of that he had to teach himself by either failing and correcting, or watching others. The part of social interaction training literally is nonexistant. So, yeah, he's a bit rough around the edges, but at his core, I believe he is a good person, but he sometimes lets his passion get the better of him and directs the choices he makes instead of thinking logically. When his "passion storm" (so to speak) was calmed by Christine, his first reaction was joy, or victory, or anything of the sort. It was a burning, utter shame. Shame for the all the harm he had caused to others because of his own desires... MY HEART GOES TO YOU ERIK! YOU HAVE MY SYMPATHY!
have your beer my lord !!! . the truth, I would be disappointed with the end, I thought Christine was going to stay with the ghost. I haven't read the book because the truth bores me reading.
The book adds another layer of sadness to this: Erik, for a time, fled to Persia and became the secret assassin of the ruler there (hence why he favors using a special lasso to strangle his victims). He also learned about architecture and how to design secret passages in every part of the palace so he could always listen in on conversations and conveniently be right where he needed to be whenever someone needed to be killed off. Problem was he got to be so good at both of the above that the Persian king came to fear he'd be the perfect tool for a rival party to off him and seize the throne so he ordered Erik to be put to death (Erik only escaping thanks to the enigmatic entity known as the Persian). The one time Erik gets any sort of actual appreciation and respect for his talents it almost ends with his death, and that's after his being a circus freak and being shunned by his mother. No wonder the guy's got such warped morals and trust issues.
For some reason, I think of this "I Let her go" "Why ?" "I had to" "How could you do that ?" "Because... I love her." Similarity to Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast
I cried when she gave the ring back. She may have been in love with someone else but she did have some love for him. He mentored her in music, constantly guided her. She should have kept the ring to show how thankful she was.
You can just hear the pain and hurt in Gerard Butler’s voice and it AFFECTS ME EVERY. DAMN. TIME. When he sings in front of the monkey and looks at Christine...along with the beautiful music...my poor heart can’t take it... A masterclass in acting. Almost cried just typing this.
the smile after she kissed him makes me tear up, she for a split second actually saw him as a man not the Phantom. then he started crying and all of it shatters and her smile is gone. all he wanted was her love, he gets it and it makes him cry. then she returns the ring, she was told to leave and came back to give her original engagement ring that the Phantom took back to the Phantom. she loves him, she just can't be with him. and if anyone has seen Love Never Dies then the theory of why she came back to give the ring is all more fucking powerful. she does love him... a lot.. but she can't be with him. not cause of his fsce, but because of what he's done.
I think she kissed him and felt bad about leaving not because she truly loves him, but because she feels really sorry for him, she even called him a pity full creature of darkness
No matter how many times I watch this, it rips out my heart, it makes me cry like a baby, because I can relate so much to the character of the phantom. Because of certain physical disabilities, I know exactly what pain he felt, and what it feels like to be rejected by every single person on this planet. It hurts more than you could ever possibly imagine, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
@@beastinsight9825 thank you…unfortunately, it’s a lifelong condition I just have to learn to cope with…it’s NOT easy, it feels like I’m being permanently punished for a sin I didn’t commit. But….I have to remind myself, it could always be worse, though admittedly, I tend to be somewhat of a recluse because it’s just easier, then facing dirty looks, back handed, cruel comments, and everyone staring at me with disgust. I know most people don’t mean to be cruel, and it’s human nature to stare at things we seldom see, it still hurts.
@@GIguyI would propose wearing a mask like the Phantom. I feel more comfortable in front of people wearing a mask. No offense. Also, wish you the best.
What makes this movie so great isn't any quality of singing, but rather the raw power and emotion that is expressed that can be felt straight to the core. When Erik's heart shatters, you can feel your own do the same.
Gerard’s phantom was amazing def my fave. He should have won an award for this. His acting was superb. I like his voice too it’s warm and comforting. Didn’t deserve any hate for that I heard he got at the time.
When he sings Masquerade softly, he smiles while looking at the music box. This makes me feel warm cuz he stills feels happiness and like a 5 year old child in a good way. And he could still be sweet inside.
They both look sad... that's what made me cry. I could see that Christine didn't want to give up the ring, and when she looked back at him on the boat she looked sad too... Why does this give me so much feels?? 🤧😭
Maria Goodman Well in Love Never Dies (the sequel to POTO) it shows that Christine truely loved the Phantom over Rouel and the Phantom is the true father of Christine's son not Rouel.
@Logjam225 It's been like 10 years since Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote Love Never Dies. After that long, it's not a spoiler anymore, it's just something you didn't know about.
I love the acting after the actual kiss; Butler showed the Phantom’s multiple feelings of happiness, sadness, regret, pity, remorse and shock. Well done :)
When he’s looking at the monkey he has so much happiness in his face and it’s all he’s ever known since he was in that circus. I cried so hard my eyes still stung the next day
I agree. She honestly did. She loved him at a completely different level compared to Raoul, but Raoul offered safety which is something Erik (the Phantom) could not, so he let her go even though it tore both them in two.
+Asha Asia This scene really proved to me that Christine loved the Phantom somehow, when she kisses him she does it twice (In front of her fiance I might add). One kiss would have caused the same result, the first one was for him, the second one was for her.
Asha Tomlinson more then anything. You can tell when she kissed him. If Erik wouldn't have told her to go she would have chosen him before Raoul... poor Erik, this makes my heart shatter all the time.
Although, she pitied him. It is an important distinction. I feel really sorry for him, but it isn't the type of love associated with sacrifice and admiration. It's kind of like when you hear someone's sad story and they say "Awwww, I could just hug/kiss you." On the other hand, she did have some connection to him when he was her Angel of Music, but it was not romantic. He had to offer an illusion, but he even realized that she could not stay with him in his fantasy. His desperation had lead to manipulation, murder, and kidnapping.
She is frightend him, adore his voice , and She is who has a compassion, pity for him. That is why He love her so much. She is so gentle, innocence, pity for him, not love for sure. he know that and accepted her pity. Her kissing bring him in the world with full of happiness which He never take it. Because of her kissing He taste the happiness the world offer. He feel enough and let her go. Because He love her so much and SHe deserve with that life , the life with her young lover- the Count . How he feel happy when his ANgel as a prisoner beside by him. Do you remember ? He is a monster with a Angel Soul and a generous heart for his little Chrisitine. Poor Erik, I love you and I admire you actor Gerald. Whatever you are, however you ugly, you can show me his love for her fully. It is amazing, how you take her hand to go down, how you look at Christine, and your shape so amazing with Cloak, Strong man in that color. You make me think that you love her more than everything in this world. You even be taken mask by her. I still see a warm of love in his eyes by face to face with her. OMG , that eye touching me so much. Thank you.
He snapped out of jealousy in his own crazy way, but eventually let her go. He really does love her. Christine really loves him and could see he changed once he said I love you. If she didn't, she wouldn't have looked back at him when she was sailing off the boat. She might have had some small crush feelings for Raoul but that was it.
I like the way the 25 Anniversary direction put this scene together FAR better. From the scream, to the “I love you” and the fact that he says it AFTER he sees her take off the ring, to the subtle look over the shoulder toward Erik as she starts to sing “All I Ask…” the 25th Anniversary is simply the definitive depiction of this story. The direction is perfection.
Do you guys see that tiny smile at 1:01 on Christine's face? THAT says it all. She kissed him twice. The first kiss was for him, and the second for her. She did love him, but she could not stay with him for what he did. After the kiss, she is kinda relieved and sure about her love, I mean, she sees Eric, not the Phantom or the Angel of Music. But when Eric sends her away with her childhood love, her thoughts shatter, as his heart did when he felt her touch. Eric loved her so much, that setting her free was his salvation too. His character ends perfectly with the phrase "It's over now for the music of the night", meaning he played his part in Christine's life, and also felt her loving touch. Christine gave him back his ring, knowing that she loves him and that he will forever be in her mind, heart and voice. Eric was the only one who saw the real Christine, and Christine, besides accepting Eric for what he really is, finally left behind her dead father and the Angel of Music fantasy. (hi stranger, this is just my opinion, I really like talking about this movie)
I actually think the first kiss was for Raoul so that he could live, and the second kiss was for Erik because, after seeing his reaction to the first kiss, Christine didn't want him to feel alone.
I saw it on broadway twice. The first time I saw it, the final scene had me in tears. Its my favorite musical ever. I love when the theater goes dark and all you see is the Phantom’s mask. Beyond words and emotion. So tragically beautiful.
“It’s over now the music of the night” always hits me right in the heart... I don’t know how and I can’t explain why but it’s so painful. So much power
When he sings masquerade he looks like such a lost little child, it breaks my heart how her said that he loves her, and you can tell she loves him too, but she can't. And to see him cry is so heartbreaking. Truly a heart wrenching story. So many sides, possibilities, unseen feelings
Erik's past and fate made me sad, but whoa, Christine's unconditional/motherly love made me cry like a baby. No wonder why Erik chose her. She holds this Saint Mary kind of love. The quote on her grave was so accurate. "Loving mother and wife".
Anyone that loves the Phantom and Christine together should read the original script for this movie :) it shows what the writers actually meant for the scenes to mean to the viewers. in the script, they say Christine and him share a "lovers kiss" at the end, and brings light to a lot of the chemistry they have together and what she's thinking and meant to portray in their scenes they share. My favorite part after reading the script is that in the end, it says she's supposed to be singing her part in "All I ask of you" to the Phantom and that, that's why she never stops looking back and keeps her gaze on him until he's gone. It's like how he sang his version of "All I Ask Of You" to her after "The Point Of No Return" and she's responding!
Thank you so much! Probably, I was looking for exactly yours comment out of 2000 others… You have given me back my life. Thanks a lot❤️🩹 Where can i find the original script?
And fun fact, in the sequel to Phantom of the Opera - Love Never Dies, Christine, Raoul (Now her husband) and their son, Gustave are invited to come to the United States (Specifically New York as the setting is Coney Island) for Christine to perform at the Phantasm, unaware that it's actually the Phantom whom had contacted her, and over time, it turns out that Gustave is not Raoul's son, he's in fact the Phantom/Erik's son as it's confirmed that after the events of Phantom of the Opera, Erik reunited with Christine and ended up conceiving Gustave before she got married to Raoul. It ends this time around with another death but not at the hands of the Phantom like with the chandelier in the Opera House; but one of the Phantom's workers - Meg (Madam Giry's daughter and friend to Christine) shoots Christine by accident whilst trying to be calmed down by the Phantom and Christine dies in the phantom's arms with Christine admitting that her "love will never die" and that Gustave takes his fathers mask off and touches his face without fear after the phantom, ran to the end of the cony island dock, leaving Christine's deceased body with Raoul, Meg and Giry.
I saw the 25th Anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera when it was shown on TV recently and today I watched this film version and loved every moment. My heart melted for Eric in the end and when he was singing along with the music box I just broke down he is a gentle soul in reality and just wanted to be loved. I think Gerard Butler was a fantastic Phantom ❤
Oh...My...Gosh. I cried the first time I saw this, and I will cry the last time I see it. Big spectacular opera voice singing, and then the quietness of him singing along to the music box. Beautiful!
This is the best Phantom Of The Opera movie to me. Visuals, vocals, atmosphere and the aesthetic is just perfect. Joel Schumacher did a phenomenal job on giving Erik relatability. This scene never fails to bring tears to my eyes
This scene just destroys me and makes me cry every time. I feel like I connect with Erik so much when he is just sitting there singing at the end. All he wants is love and compassion, yet doesn’t know how to express his emotions. “It’s over now the music of THE NIGHT!!!”
I wanted Christine to choose Erik, but not because of everyone else's reason. He didn't love her for 90% of the movie, not until the end. The rest of it was obsession with possessing beauty, as in Christine. But anyways, I wanted Christine to choose Erik because he needed someone to show him compassion, love, and how to be a little more, well, humane. Instead, (based on my knowledge of this movie, i havent read the book or anything) he was left in the dungeon to wallow in his mental pain and longing for love til (i'm guessing) death. If anyone knows if there's something I'm missing or if he was happy with what he had at the end or something, please correct me. Thank you
Never mind the sequel.. the real story ends as this one does. They say if you love someone you let them go. I think he always loved her, he just didnt know how to show it bc he was never loved himself and he snapped from jealousy. But after they kissed he realized how much he loved her and wanted her to be happy. It still bothers me how it ended. At least he got to make out someone he loved
I agree but also Christine's entire life was music and performing. It was her passion. The phantom was a genius with art and singing so he taught her everything he knew. Even though Raoul can give her a normal life, he can't give her the music that brought her true happiness. The phantom can.
2:10 brought me back to my childhood - I had a toy that spoke when you pressed a button, and I'd always look for comfort in it whenever my parents were fighting in the other room
Just watched this movie for the first time today. I was so touched by the Phantom’s character. Deep down he is a good person, “secretly” as he stated earlier. He wanted love. To be loved. Just once.
this is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen... when he is watching the monkey and singing, gosh! And the tears on his face.... It's so sad....I cried like a child and wish Christine choose him ♥ I just want to jump into his arms, with mask or without, nice face or not...I don't care!!! And finally, I absolutely love Gerard Butler in this role, really! So handsome man and the best Phantom ever ♥ ♥ ♥
Hide your face where the world will never find you......... I live for the extreme moments like these. So perfect! I feel alive. The heart break is way too familiar.
I always felt sorry for the phantom, because of the deformities he was born with abandoned by his mother and then later sold to a circus no one had ever shown him any kindness, so no wonder he was so twisted. Even the Ballerina who helped set him free hid him away in the darkness, so was it any wonder that he confused Christine's kindness for love? he never knew love was.
«You alone can make my song take flight... That's over now the Music of the Night»💔 He's the best Phantom, I think. Yes, he didn't have the same skill in singing as the others, but he's really gorgeous. He makes me cry in every scene, like Emmy. That's fantastic cast❤
I didn't notice that until this video and I've literally watched the movie 3 times over the span of 3 days (twice the first day I watched it, once yesterday)
Rachael Kirkland Christine looking back has a meaningful symbol in my opinion, if you don’t care about someone why look back? She chose safety over love, that’s why she chose Roaul over Erik.
Joel Johnson true, he’s a wimp but didn’t Christine confess she had sex with the phantom in LND? So I guess she chose Erik after all, some people say LND isn’t canon though
When he sings Christy I love you. And she gave him the ring back that tore my whole heart apart. And then the rose with the ring at the end. This will always be one of my top five favorites.
The way he looks at the monkey just shatters my heart and when he starts crying when Christine leaves the little shards of heart on the ground are just being stomped on...
I saw the play "Phantom of the Opera" for the first time when I was 12,and the movie when I was 13 and have been a fan ever since, but it's with the experience from so much both good and bad from the rest of the world that I really understand the mind of the Phantom! That in a way we all have some of the Phantom in us. We have all been hurt as we unfortunately also have hurt others and we put on masks in order to hide away from our bad sides and tendencies. I totally understand his anger towards the rest of the world at times because of how he has been treated but also how he shows kindness to those who show compassion just like Christine so kindly. I really learned alot from this story when I look at what I have went through myself. In a way I think we can all relate to the story
all the people saying the phantom deserved to end up with christine because he has trauma don’t understand that it isn’t christine’s responsibility to put herself in an abusive relationship because of that.
sure, but when was he ever abusive to her? did he hurt her like at all? aside from when she took his mask off but honestly she walked herself into that. he clearly has a mask on for a reason. if she respected his boundaries he would have shown her eventually but anyway, back to the point. he showed her kindness, compassion, and true love. when both Raoul and Erik tell her i love you, you can see who really means it. Raoul only found interest in her after he saw that she could sing. whether he fell in love with her or not eventually, one of them TRULY loved Christine with all their heart. and i’m gonna have to say it was the phantom. agree or disagree but Erik was so kind and gentle with her. Raoul didn’t show love the way Erik showed it. i’d happily go live in the dungeons with him. the phantom of the opera will always hold a place in my heart. great job Gerald Butler
POTO is actually the first movie I've ever watched my entire life and will always hold a special place in my heart. Still the most tragic, mesmerizing and breathtaking movie ever made
When you realize that was not only his first kiss but probably the first time he's experienced love with a human's touch.
Man, stop it's 11::32 mm and I am crying my eyes out 😭😭😭
Stoppp 😭😭😭
STOP, I'LL CRY 😭😭
Realistically, he likely came in his pants straight away.
That just makes it even more depressing 😭
"Christine, I love you"
AHHH I CRY EVERYTIME
Emma Mango same

Wow way to rub salt in the wounds, the just start singing together WHILST THEY ARE STILL SAILING AWAY, WHERE HE CAN HEAR. NICE.
NosKryme I think he is remembering them on the rooftops. Their mouths aren’t moving in this scene.
Lit kills me every time. Like literally getting stabbed is less painful then that!
I dont know what pain is
Yea they weren't singing. it was on his mind. they're mouths were not moving at this scene whatsoever.
Thats what I was thinking haha
Him being given the ring back and hearing the distant echo of Christine's singing as she exits the cave and a tear rolls down his cheek is one of the most powerfully cinematic moments I have ever seen. It's in that moment that he realises that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. The most vital piece of his music and life is truly gone and he is condemned to spend the rest of his life contending with that heartbreak. Such a powerful moment.
🥺
You should actually read the books lol
"...that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. " That's a magnificent analysis, thank you!
@@isaiahsmith2475This was ‘inspired’ by the book, so not an interpretation of the book!
Gerard should have won an Oscar that year. He shredded my heart and all I wanted was for him (the Phantom) to find love. He's an incredible actor to wrench that kind of emotion out of me.
No he wouldn't. He's really a werewolf in disguise.
@@jasminnemcdonald94A why are you so mad lol ???

It's too bad he will never portray James Bond. That would be supercool in addition to being the Phantom of the Opera

If I could describe Erik in a sentence, I'd say "A bad man, but not a heartless man." He does bad things for bad reasons, but there's something worth crying for in that tortured soul.
Very well said!
OptimusPhillip “A bad man, but not a heartless man.” Damn, that’s powerful.

Marissa Klein Yeah, they do the uh oh spaghettios the night of Christine’s wedding and have a little itty bitty baby boy, and then Christine dies and Raoul fucks off and The Phantom’s like “well I’m Dad now”
i saw that
The part where Erik is singing with the music box made me bawl my eyes out.

In the 25th anniversary version, the phantom smiled and said "Christine, I love you..." AFTER she gave him the ring, and you can see Christine's face instantly saddens and she kissed his hands in tears. I like it better because it hardens the fact that the phantom learned to love with pure heart: after knowing she didn't came back to stay with him, he wasn't full of rage like he always did before; on the contrary, he smiled at her in the most genuine and heart warming way and let her go in calmness.
ah yes, the version with Ramin and Sierra.. That scene breaks me every time!
Yes I thought the ending with Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggas was brilliant, loved the whole thing Doreen
Sorry meant to say too, it really gets your heartstrings and pulls them to bits Doreen
Totally agree, I personally think he has an awesome voice.
But on a musical would be better have a Broadway actor, he could sing and act equally good
I think tecnachly his a singing isn't the best but he really convey the raw emotion
his acting makes his singing better to me. when he sings "christine I love you" it sounded so raw and i just want to go cry in a hole. Idk i really liked his voice in it, even though i know most people dont
JulietteMarie I thought his singing was pretty solid. I mean, it’s no Michael Crawford or Ramin Karimloo, but I think it’s good (but as an overall actor, he’s probably the best).
His face becomes so hopeful at 3:08 and then she leaves him and takes the ring off.. His heart was shattered😭
Ikr now i hate christine Xp
The ring belonged to Raul so why she gave him the ring is symbolize something else

Jackie McCann
Jackie McCann she wanted him to have something to remember her, plus it's a simbol of love to give rings to eatch other's, right! She loved Erik more.
she gave him raoul's engagement ring, not his. that's what i thought at first too lol
Jackie McCann I agree
I REALLY want to know what Gerard’s audition looked like. He’s obviously not the best singer, but I LOVE the...powerful vulnerability he brings to Phantom. Love him lots
He was chosen by the director for his rock vocals but had to audition in front of webber, Shumacher wanted to appeal to a younger audience. I think he did great
He is the opposite of the character he acts (the Phantom). Gerard is more of an actor than a singer.
@@Billygoatsgrruffhe actually had to sing in front of Andrew Lloyd Webber himself as well and he admitted he was scared as hell
I saw the play 5 times. This is 100 times better. He is the most sensual of all of them. He made the Phantom exciting and human. Bravo Gerard
That’s exactly what I think
You should watch Charles Dance’s version.

John Penza it was his first time with a musical and i really agree he really did an awesome job.. one of the reasons why i love this version!
John Penza I think he did more than hold his own! He was amazing!
Out of all the Phantom portrayals, I wouldn’t say he’s the best at singing, but he’s definitely the best at acting :)
The part where the Phantom sit alone with the monkey and where Christine gave her ring always makes me cry.
Janae Clarice i could not agree more...
My heart- it cracks
And she looks back sadly at him when she and Raoul are singing theri little love song
She chose him but he pushed her away
It's actually Raoul's ring. She puts on the ring she got engaged to Raoul with then kisses Erik! She leaves the ring with Erik to remember her by.
+McKenna West I agree with you, this scene made it so clear that she did love him but she couldn't admit it to anyone including herself
+Emilie H yeah and she looked back cuz she loved him back
V. Santiago Exactly!
Why did she kiss him like that only to leave him? it was so misleading.. I didnt know the ending before watching it and I was left so disappointed.
Because he is a murderer, because he is not a good man, because as much and as strongly as he loved her he loved himself more. Relationships don't always end because a couple doesn't love each other. Phantoms love for Christine was his only redeeming quality and it just wasn't enough.
Ok but can we just appreciate the fact that he broke the mirrors in sync with the music?
SIS I'M----
I wouldn't expect anything less from the Phantom
Wait really? I need to rewatch that part
That automatically makes it better than Les Mis, lol.

"Christine, I love you" **chokes on heart**
Lily is :'(
Lily is You explained what happens to me every time I watch this when even I couldn’t
No matter how many times I watch this movie or how many times I've seen the show, that moment kills me.
He really did love her
You can bash him for his singing in the rest of the movie, but the way he delivers "Its over now, the music of the night" is amazing.
I personally wouldn’t even bash him for his signing. Considering he’s one of the few members of the cast who has no background in trained singing his performance blew me away!
Honestly it makes more logical sense for him to not be an amazing singer, given he would have never received any vocal training.
He’s amazing
Edit: which also makes sense to why she had the ring on her finger when she gives it back to him. I don’t know how I missed it.
I never noticed either! Thanks for pointing that out.
Once again, many thanks for your observation and for pointing out the important detail in this scene!
isn’t that the ring raoul gave her?
So much symbolism when the Phantom shatters the mirrors!
Isostormgamer 558 his heart
i watched the movie when i was 9 and i always told everyone that the phantom shattering the mirrors was my favorite part due to the symbolism... there is so much meaning behind him shattering it and it just makes me cry everytime.
Wow
If you have seen Love Never Dies, Meg Giry also smashes a mirror in one scene, probably in imitation of the Phantom in this scene.
This is a very good interpretation
I need a tissue cuz that was a great meaningful explanation that almost makes one cry. Very nice
have your beer my lord !!! . the truth, I would be disappointed with the end, I thought Christine was going to stay with the ghost.
The movie is so far away from the book though.
For some reason, I think of this
"I Let her go"
"Why ?"
"I had to"
"How could you do that ?"
"Because... I love her."
Similarity to Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast
Daniel Bautista if you really think about it phantom of the opera and beauty and the beast are pretty similar once you think about it
Man I’m beginning to think France is a place for deformed people. Phantom of the opera,Beauty and the beast and then The hunchback of Norte Dame..
I cried when she gave the ring back. She may have been in love with someone else but she did have some love for him. He mentored her in music, constantly guided her. She should have kept the ring to show how thankful she was.
both have red rose motifs
Kylo Ren and Rey is that you?
You can just hear the pain and hurt in Gerard Butler’s voice and it AFFECTS ME EVERY. DAMN. TIME. When he sings in front of the monkey and looks at Christine...along with the beautiful music...my poor heart can’t take it...
A masterclass in acting.

2022 🥺🥺
2022
the smile after she kissed him makes me tear up, she for a split second actually saw him as a man not the Phantom. then he started crying and all of it shatters and her smile is gone. all he wanted was her love, he gets it and it makes him cry. then she returns the ring, she was told to leave and came back to give her original engagement ring that the Phantom took back to the Phantom. she loves him, she just can't be with him. and if anyone has seen Love Never Dies then the theory of why she came back to give the ring is all more fucking powerful. she does love him... a lot.. but she can't be with him. not cause of his fsce, but because of what he's done.
Very good analysis, it's mine too !
He also pushed her away telling him to leave with Raoul
"it is in your soul... Where true distruction lays"
I think she kissed him and felt bad about leaving not because she truly loves him, but because she feels really sorry for him, she even called him a pity full creature of darkness
Bro, the end of love never dies had me crying so hard lmao
No matter how many times I watch this, it rips out my heart, it makes me cry like a baby, because I can relate so much to the character of the phantom. Because of certain physical disabilities, I know exactly what pain he felt, and what it feels like to be rejected by every single person on this planet. It hurts more than you could ever possibly imagine, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.

@@beastinsight9825 thank you…unfortunately, it’s a lifelong condition I just have to learn to cope with…it’s NOT easy, it feels like I’m being permanently punished for a sin I didn’t commit.
Gerard Butler is brilliant as the Phantom. A wonderful versatile actor.
I hate it when she gives him the ring makes me cry because he smiles and then she gives him the ring
It's the most heartbreaking scene in the whole musical
Maria Goodman Well in Love Never Dies (the sequel to POTO) it shows that Christine truely loved the Phantom over Rouel and the Phantom is the true father of Christine's son not Rouel.
This whole scene shattered me
@Logjam225 It's been like 10 years since Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote Love Never Dies. After that long, it's not a spoiler anymore, it's just something you didn't know about.
😭😭😭😭😭
I love the acting after the actual kiss; Butler showed the Phantom’s multiple feelings of happiness, sadness, regret, pity, remorse and shock. Well done :)
When he’s looking at the monkey he has so much happiness in his face and it’s all he’s ever known since he was in that circus. I cried so hard my eyes still stung the next day
she loved him, really
IM NOT CRYING MY HEART IS JUST SHATTERED IN A MILLION PIECES
Haikoo like the mirror...... I'm sorry I had to
and im crying
I cry every time I see this scene. I even cried in the live musical!
Ur not the only one here

Erik's past and fate made me sad, but whoa, Christine's unconditional/motherly love made me cry like a baby. No wonder why Erik chose her. She holds this Saint Mary kind of love. The quote on her grave was so accurate. "Loving mother and wife".
Yes!! Her kindness saved him!
The motherly theme is more present in the book, where she simply kisses his forehead and I think it’s much better than the musical’s version
If this scene doesn't break your heart at least a little, you are made of out of cold, hard stone.
The emotion in his voice when he says "it's over now the music of the night!" it breaks my heart.
Thanks a lot❤️🩹
Where can i find the original script?
FUCK
Say what you like about the singing, Gerard Butler's acting was ON POINT.
Oh...My...Gosh. I cried the first time I saw this, and I will cry the last time I see it. Big spectacular opera voice singing, and then the quietness of him singing along to the music box. Beautiful!
huh, it's too depressing
This is the best Phantom Of The Opera movie to me. Visuals, vocals, atmosphere and the aesthetic is just perfect. Joel Schumacher did a phenomenal job on giving Erik relatability. This scene never fails to bring tears to my eyes
The older I get the more I realize how relatable Erik is, we've all seen the person we have feelings for with another person and it hurts.
this is the most heartbreaking scene in the world give me a minute
DAMN am I the only one crying their face off when "Its over now the MUSIC OF THE NIGHTTTT" shoot that killed me.
Yes! I don't know exactly why though, maybe I'll find out soon
No you're not the only one
Ahhh! I’m crying like a baby now! All my friends think I’m so weird! 😭
When the Phantom says "Christine, I love you." Its the exact same way Raoul sang it at the end of "All I Ask of You"
This scene just destroys me and makes me cry every time. I feel like I connect with Erik so much when he is just sitting there singing at the end. All he wants is love and compassion, yet doesn’t know how to express his emotions. “It’s over now the music of THE NIGHT!!!”
I love the way she's staring at him like that. Emma has such a soft heart. and she has a beautiful innocent child face.
Thank you
There's a sequel called "Love Never Dies" which is 10 years after this. Watch it 😊
Never mind the sequel.. the real story ends as this one does. They say if you love someone you let them go. I think he always loved her, he just didnt know how to show it bc he was never loved himself and he snapped from jealousy. But after they kissed he realized how much he loved her and wanted her to be happy. It still bothers me how it ended. At least he got to make out someone he loved
TheMaceygirl08 She goes back to the Phantom in the Sequel Love Never Dies.
I agree but also Christine's entire life was music and performing. It was her passion. The phantom was a genius with art and singing so he taught her everything he knew. Even though Raoul can give her a normal life, he can't give her the music that brought her true happiness. The phantom can.
Isostormgamer 558 I've seen that
2:10 brought me back to my childhood - I had a toy that spoke when you pressed a button, and I'd always look for comfort in it whenever my parents were fighting in the other room
2:10 this part always killed me😭😭 he looks so young... so broken... and then she gives him back his ring🥺 my heart can’t take it🥺🥺
Just watched this movie for the first time today.
The very definition of a sympathetic villain
I can't watch this scene without crying. The Phantom's (Erik's) story just breaks my heart. 😭😭😭
I dont know why but I find that final "night" so satisfying and it is just utter perfection
"You alone can make my song take flight" Makes me cry every single time
I feel the phantom's pain
Yeah he truly did love her
I always felt sorry for the phantom, because of the deformities he was born with abandoned by his mother and then later sold to a circus no one had ever shown him any kindness, so no wonder he was so twisted. Even the Ballerina who helped set him free hid him away in the darkness, so was it any wonder that he confused Christine's kindness for love? he never knew love was.
It breaks my heart when he sings “Christine I love you” 😪💔
"Hide your face so the world will never find you"
That line must have hit so hard on Erik.
«You alone can make my song take flight...
That's over now the Music of the Night»💔
He's the best Phantom, I think. Yes, he didn't have the same skill in singing as the others, but he's really gorgeous. He makes me cry in every scene, like Emmy. That's fantastic cast❤
Is it weird that I have fallen in love with the phantom (Gerard ) and would love him even for what he have done and the scar. (or what it is) ?
Emma Stone ME TOO!!!!
Emma Stone, me to, my cousin hates it when I say, that I would have chosen the phantom over raoul
Same
Emma Stone I'm the same
It's syphilis on his face. Back then it was a problem.
This is honestly the most beautiful and meaningful kiss in Hollywood history
Ok, Gerard has played EVERYWHERE. What can this man NOT do?? 😍😍😍😍😍
Gerard’s expressions of anguish are tearing me up inside. 😢 He was an amazing Phantom.
The part where he said “It’s over now, the music of the night “ breaks my heart all the time
SHE LOOKED BACK! I would've jumped out of the boat and swam to Phantom
I didn't notice that until this video and I've literally watched the movie 3 times over the span of 3 days (twice the first day I watched it, once yesterday)
@@songbird-in-the-night I wish I could watch it again but I don't have a copy. I watched it when it used to be on netflix
Rachael Kirkland Christine looking back has a meaningful symbol in my opinion, if you don’t care about someone why look back? She chose safety over love, that’s why she chose Roaul over Erik.
@@_the_little_mermaid_ I guess that makes since but Raouls kinda a wimp. Especially in LND. I'm a guy but even I would choose phantom
Joel Johnson true, he’s a wimp but didn’t Christine confess she had sex with the phantom in LND? So I guess she chose Erik after all, some people say LND isn’t canon though
This breaks my heart.
These are the manliest tears that you have ever seen.
When he sings Christy I love you. And she gave him the ring back that tore my whole heart apart. And then the rose with the ring at the end. This will always be one of my top five favorites.
The pure raw emotion and pain of this scene is so powerfully profound ,pure cinema gold
When she turns around and looks at him just makes me cry
The way he looks at the monkey just shatters my heart and when he starts crying when Christine leaves the little shards of heart on the ground are just being stomped on...
It breaks my heart when he starts singing Rouls part in all ask of you
I saw the play "Phantom of the Opera" for the first time when I was 12,and the movie when I was 13 and have been a fan ever since, but it's with the experience from so much both good and bad from the rest of the world that I really understand the mind of the Phantom!
He only wanted love 😭♥️ 2:16 the most innocent thing in the world after probably his first kiss just to have his heart broken 😭😭
all the people saying the phantom deserved to end up with christine because he has trauma don’t understand that it isn’t christine’s responsibility to put herself in an abusive relationship because of that.
Holy shit thank you
Agreed🌟
sure, but when was he ever abusive to her? did he hurt her like at all? aside from when she took his mask off but honestly she walked herself into that. he clearly has a mask on for a reason. if she respected his boundaries he would have shown her eventually but anyway, back to the point. he showed her kindness, compassion, and true love. when both Raoul and Erik tell her i love you, you can see who really means it.
Thank you! Couldn't agree more!
@TheBlueShadow 101101 ya, but he didn’t mean to harm her
What a pain!!! His first love, His first kiss!!! and he has to let it go, for love to her... My soul Is broken like the mirror
I like how Christine holds the side of erik’s face that’s burnt. That shows her feeling for him.
POTO is actually the first movie I've ever watched my entire life and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Still the most tragic, mesmerizing and breathtaking movie ever made
I just find this the perfect representation of loving what’s inside, not just depending on looks.
