  • Ever wondered whatever happen to the Segway? Or even what all the fuss was all about? This week; why I think the Segway never caught on; and what does it mean for the ninebot Z10 the new electrical unicycle that is the based on the very same technology?
    Would it mean that our favorite ride is also just a passing fad and doom to failure? Or would
    the better range and performances finally convince the public and help finally realize the original Segway personal transportation concept?
    This is a slight departure from my typical reviews but I hope you enjoy it!

    Very well put together. I appreciate your dedication to making such a well thought out video. Its a breath of fresh air to listen to someone who sounds well educated not snobby just cool. For me it's a cost thing as well as being high risk. It's hard to justify paying that kind of money for something that looks like I am going to end up on my face one day. I like watching the videos but I struggle trusting it.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thank you! Yes the cost is still high and the risk is real, however it isn’t un-manageable and compare to something like motorcycle, it is a lot safer. As long as you wear proper protection and do not ride in an unresponsive fashion, the chance of being hurt is minimal. But having one has been life changing for me, reducing the friction of getting around means that I actually want to be out more, and that opens up all king of new things!

      Hsiang additionally, there are many activities that are awesome, fun and meaningful but need a lot of training and practice like driving, skiing, in-line skating and the list goes on... the EUC is no different and is a challenge I relished. I so so enjoy riding my V10 - the feeling of carving turns, doing tight u-turns, ascending ramps, swinging from side to side. It’s just such an amazing feeling. Similar to when I first tried snow boarding. I thought it was a fad until I felt it. Certainly, Chris Rathjan, a powerful wheel will keep you upright over almost any kind of bump. It is otherworldly and an amazing feeling having the wheel correct balance going up and down dropped kerbs etc. Really amazing. Go for it!

    Hsiang - Segway did NOT invent the Ninebot, they were Bought by Segway. the Chinese invented Ninebot Technology.
    Segway Transpoerter are Factually Safer than the Ninebot. and Security and Police still use Segway to do Patrols.
    the Segway was not to replace walking, but as an Alternative to commuting in a CAR , when you are a Single Driver.
    the Segway even has a Awesome OFF Road Segway and a Wheelchair Based Segway that puts the Ninebot to shame, you CANNOT take Ninebot off Road and its really an Unsafe vehicle, the Segway mini is still safer. and I can Tell you, the Segway Factually has more Stopping Power and Better Traction because of its Two Wheels as opposed to the UNI wheel of Ninebot.
    I own a Gillera Fuooco MP3 500, and its Three Wheels provide the Best Grip and Safety , I can Safely Ride over Train Tracks and WET Cobblestone, which any Two wheel Motorbike would SLIP and FALL. I can also LEAN into Corners like a Fighter Pilot. the Segway is Similar in Philosphy .

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Safety is really all relative; and it all comes down to trade off. I also ride a Piaggio MP3 500, which is the US version of the Gilera. The additional wheel certainly provide a significant safety improvement compare with 2 wheels motorcycle/ scooter, but is much less safe/ stable then a car but the trade off of lower cost/ easy to park was worth it for me. But I am sure many motorcyclist would think that the MP3 is too slow and the 500 cc underpowered for such a heavy scooter and the same comparison carries over to Segway vs electric unicycle or Z10. But here the speed limit on the segway (12mph/20km) is just too low, at that speed you can’t replace a car, not even a bicycle. Yes the additional wheel is safer, but if they speed limit the MP3 to 30mph/ 50kph. Would you still ride it?

    I love riding my mountainbike. This unicycle is awesome, but what about the braking distance? How long is on this? I feel like this device is very dangerous. On good bicycle with good brakes and person which knows how to brake (which many do not) you must brake so much faster. You really need to stop fast if you travel 40km/h or more!

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think EUCs are ultimately very different from a bicycle. I can ride my Z10 on the sidewalk in a pretty dense walking crowd, a bicycle would be unwieldy in the same situation. Also I think danger is more associated with irresponsible behavior than a particular vehicle.

    the industry will change if the automotive companies jump on board, the present manufacturers probably wasn't expecting it to last this long, to them, it probably was a fad to make some quick bucks, why would you stop at the Z10 which was one of their greatest product, if there is a change in better product quality and support and an affordable price range more people will take the ride.

    • @OWGAC

      I doubt it since there are too much liabilities associated with a product like EUC. the winning formula at least for other PEV companies like boosted are to leverage marketing and hype to get venture capital and use it to super charge R&D but the chinese companies can't exactly do that so..

Seriously

  • @PumpUptheJam81
    @PumpUptheJam81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my opinion the Segway never caught on because it was expensive and incredibly dorky (you nailed it). Mall cops sealed the deal when they started using them for patrols. The Unicycle I think has a chance, mainly because of affordability and you can easily load it into a car or walk into a train. The e scooters are a retro design we all grew up with so it will stick, yet they are still not widely accepted when rentals are tossed all over city streets and dealing with incredibly stupid operators (renters). The EUC looks like the future which is why people break their necks watching one cruise by. Can’t wait to order one!

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The steeper learning curve is really the only obstacle, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll never go back to anything else. The simplistic nature of the EUC means that you can cram a lot more performance into a smaller package, having the largest diameter tire of any PEVs is also a huge plus.

  • @leedart

    I as well agree with your observations about the failed early campaigns, however the the advent of the hoverboard was making the electric trans last mile toy a common place item in a lot of children's homes. The batt fail was the next big fail that negatively affected the e-wheel reintroduction. For example I am a flight attendant with a major legacy carrier. When the airlines and press combined all of the industry into the same poor product and then banned them it was another fail that the national press ran with. I wondered why there were no lobbyists that were deployed to save it from being thought of in the same arena as a hoverboard. I used to take it with me all over the world and tour places with it. It was great until the airlines banned them. Now I just have to enjoy the slow organic build of wheel community throughout the country and my city....Atl. it hasn't stopped me from absolutely enjoying riding around my city though....

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are no lobbists since there isn't enough of a market and most EUC manufacturer don't have a presence in the US due to patent dispute. hoverboard had been a PR nightmare for the PEV market but with Lime and Bird reviving public interests I am hoping that it'll help the EUC market grow as well. However concerns for lithium batter fire is real and untill we have a new battery chemestry, airline approved EUCs won't be feasible. better path would be standarized, modular and removable battery, and some kind of battery rental service. its feasible but would take a lot to pull something like that off.

I prefer the inherent greater stability and comfort on the scooter over the 20 miles that is covered daily. One of these days I do plan on picking up a OneWheel or Ninebot as I know they would be very fun. I think any electric vehicle that can replace your petrol burning vehicle is a good thing. My next car will be an electric one.

Electric scooter is fine, however a subtle but huge difference with EUC is that you control them via body lean and your legs, and its easier to get to a point where you think of it as an extension rather than vehicle. I am curious about this as well; you cannot remain stationary and have to stand on one leg when you stop. The other issue is that there are no shock absorber and I often had to keep my knee bend to act as a cushion. Not sure how well it would work with artificial knee joint. But the control scheme is straight forward. As long as you can control your center of gravity and shift your weight with precision then it should work.

    I'm baffled by the lack of adoption of EUCs. I've been riding mine around town for two years and get a tremendous amount of interest. I always stop and answer questions and promote the mode of transport but there are fewer than 5 EUCs in my city of 75,000 despite my having put 1000s of miles on mine around town.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’re still too much regulatory and legal headwind currently; I also read that there are a lot of patent issues on the self balance technology and this is why no American company would get into the EUC business and none of the Chinese one would have a presence here either. Without it and marketing dollars it’ll be an uphill battle, however I hope that the massive growth in electric scooter would be the gateway product that opens up more interest in other personal transportation devices like the EUC.

    Awesome review! But...
    I have a Ninebot Mini pro 320 and a Ninebot one S2.
    They are pretty different, I use both, but I still prefer much more the Minipro to travel.
    The reason? More stable, easier to ride, much lighter than the Z10 (I'll buy it for sure as soon as it will be sold in Europe!) and much cheaper (364 euro on AMZN)!
    The One S2 is a bit more expensive (Paid 414 euro), but very difficult to drive as long as you learn how to ride it, compared to the Minipro.
    Difference between EUC and small segways: With EUC you ride faster but on roads and traffic, with segways you go everywhere, between pedestrians (I work in fairs, I use it usually to get to hotels and train or underground stations etc.), you can stop, go with heavy baggages, and even enter elevators without stepping off. That's great.
    IMHO both are great, but I'm not really sure which kind of them will be the future.
    Probably, if there will be a Ninebot still compact as the mini but with bigger wheels and a bit more power (i.e. ~1600w and top speed of 28kmh) that will be a win, expecially if sold with advanced features like the Mini Plus follow me option.
    Looking forward to try the Z10. ;)

      combination of speed; bad road condition and its wide tire. The Z10 is weird in that although it wobbles at time, it does want to stay up, and if you learn to keep your leg loose and not fight the wobble, it is actually pretty stable.

    I think one of the big things hurting the popularity of the Segway was also the cost. Something like $5,000 for a vehicle that does maybe 11mph, doesn't have the portability of a unicycle. Even a lot of people who thought they were cool weren't willing to spend that much on one, for what little it could do.
    I do think the unicycles are much better (cheaper, better performance, more portable) I know where I live anyways, most people simply don't even know they exist or know much about them. I see a lot more scooters, electric skateboards, and electric long boards. Hardly any unicycles.

    I think you missed the biggest reason why EUC aren't more common ... the legal aspects ... these things are illegal in most places around the world, though in some places they may be ignored by police (e.g. New York) even if technically illegal. Because of the legal aspects there aren't many retailers promoting or selling EUC or any other PLEV. Scooters are more popular because they are easy to ride and companies such as Bird and Lime have been making scooters available to hire. Mass market appeal will rise once we see these devices being promoted and making appearances on TV and film, then everybody will want their own PLEV. Just look at how popular Hoverboards were until they were banned from public roads and pavements. The need for alternative methods of mobility is real and I believe this will explode when PLEVs become legal around the world and more retailers start promoting and selling them.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think we are at a point of technology progression where regulation will also be a step behind; the evolution and speed of change is simply too fast for most governing bodies to react to. Bird and Lime being the prime example of it. But like you said, as long as there are sufficient interests, which translate to revenue for companies whom in turn lobby the government for changes. Segway is legal in most of the US for this reason since they had lobbied for the change. But I don’t think the regulation will ever change with out a huge amount of public interests; from my experiences regulation usually gets more restrictive over time and not less.

    • @NB-fc4rl
      @NB-fc4rl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OWGAC I would also say that there is a very strong use case for PLEVs, because we need to reduce car ownership and dependence to free up our city streets and clean up the air. Electric cars are too expensive and inefficient for moving one person around and do nothing to solve congestion problems. Not everyone wants to ride a bicycle or has place to store one and we don't want our streets filled with bicycles chained to lamposts. Taxis and public transport aren't available where and when you need them and are expensive. PLEV's solve all of these problems with the only (small) downside being one of safety to riders and pedestrians. The green issue will be a main reason for governments to legalise these vehicles because it won't meet its green targets without them. In my opinion the next big revolution is personal mobility.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed 100%, but I also think that we’re a tiny tiny minority of people who get it. This is why made this video since I really think that the EUC community needs to be more outward facing, not just in terms of being welcoming but also actively go out to promote what we do and why it make sense. I think most hurdles like cost, regulation and safety can be solved but there’s has to be a will and that has to be generated by more public interests. It is interesting how Elon Musk was able to turn electric car into a premium product through Tesla, we need someone like him for EUCs also.

    Very interesting observations. I was there that day at Bryant Park and got to ride the Segway. It was like flying! I have to disagree about EUCs, however. I've watched learning videos and they've scared me off. While it's true we put up with learning how to ride a bike, that's when we were all eager kids and had peer pressure to live up to. There's nothing similar we face today as adults (except maybe getting a car and learning to drive). As far as electric personal transport goes, I'm really thinking Onewheel has the best chance of changing things. The Pint got me interested even though I'd ruled out a Onewheel before. Having watched a ton of TH-cam vids, it seems much easier to learn than an EUC. But even Onewheel has a way to go. It must be lighter and the range restrictions need to be lifted -- which could be done with a swappable battery pack like Mellow Drive offers for eSk8.

    I owned the Segway i2 for about ten years. I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of it. I found it to be extremely safe and maneuverable as well as easy after one lesson. For perspective, I have owned multiple e-rideables including e-skateboards, e-scooters, and I now have the Segway drift. I sold my Segway because the two $1K each batteries died. I also feel that it's dated as other options are smaller with smart technology/apps. It pained me to do so however. I got a lot of compliments on it and often allowed people to take it for a spin. If NYC accepted it as they do CitiBikes, I may have invested in keeping it.
    So fast-forward to the present. I bought a Solowheel Glide 3 late in 2018. So far I can't stay on it longer than a few seconds. I feel unsafe on it and can't imagine going outside on it yet. However, I was attracted to its size and the Segway-like glide. I love seeing people like yourself gliding around as I used to do on my Segway. I knew it would have a steep learning curve but I also remember not knowing how to ride my Segway initially, so I am hoping that I'll get the hang of it by summer. I do feel that the EUCs are least intrusive, so I believe they'll be accepted before anything else. I just saw a guy riding on my neighborhood sidewalk in NYC between people, slowly and with ease. I can't wait to have my 'click' moment when it feels intuitive.
    Side note: Some used Segway Its for mobility, not due to being too lazy to walk. Once I injured my ankle and was able to use it to get around. Some seniors use it for mobility. And at 12.5 mph, it's more akin to a brisk jog. By contrast, I have read about the EUCs suddenly dying and throwing people off due to zero balance if it dies. So we all take risks with these.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know it might sound like I am down on the segway, but it’s more like I am trying to figure out why the it failed, which I don’t think anyone would disagree that it did. I loved my palm treo, and the fact that palm failed did not make it a bad product, just one that nobody bought.

    • @SenatorPerry

      $0.02. I think most people loved the Segways as long as they got on one. I purchased an off-brand A8 knockoff for my 5 year old daughter. She stepped up on it and has been riding it frequently since. I ride an InMotion V3Pro I picked up second hand from a family that purchased it for their daughter, but was abandoned as uncool.
      There are many of us that live in a function over form World. Who cares what my V3Pro EUC looks like when it gets me where I want. Then there are others that will slap a judgement on the Palm Treo (I had one with the modem card) when the iPhones came around. It is no longer "this isn't for me" and more "anyone that rides this thing is an idiot". This is the prevailing attitude we need to work on. This is what killed the original Segway. I remember the comments made to me.
      The Ninebot Z10, Z8, Z6 series is the key. They are absolutely beautiful. They are the iPhone to the fully functional Treo (IP5, V3Pro, Ninebot E+). Unfortunately, like the iPhone, they are such a premium product that casual riders like myself can't justify the price.
      Please keep doing what you are doing. It is a great video with a great message.

    • @TheLillianYoung
      @TheLillianYoung 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OWGAC If the success or failure is based on their initial launch statement, then it didn't meet that goal, agreed. However, it's still on the market and many e-rideables are based on its technology as you noted in the video.
      My opinion is that market saturation was hindered by price and regulations.
      I also believe that in places where Citibikes and Bird scooters are popular, if Segways were available and branded as such, people may have been more prone to see them as viable, safe, low maintanence fun transportation.
      Unfortunately my i2 (now sold) and the newer PT models are dated IMO. Most don't have any smart features like app connectivity and as you said, there are other options - basing their technology on that original Segway though ;)

    Actually technic wise the Ninebot is a big disappointment, seeing that 9b needed 4 years for development. And then DOA failure rate.....horrible.

      I don’t disagree; I think none of the EUC company makes a product that is quite ready for prime time just yet, KingSong does have better quality control, however their design consist of just scaling the shell up and down to accommodate different wheel size, while Gotway’s look like plastic boxes. We nee a wheel that is engineer well and design beautifully, but without more popularization and demand, we’ll probably never get it.

    • @Kickersoccer69

      Actually i can absolutly not agree, they dont „just size the wheel“ up, perhaps you could have said that for the evolution/downsizing from KS16 to 14d/s.....where the 14d/s was the follower of the boxy 14c...
      Actually there is also the highshell KS18S, which is the best wheel for long range seated option, it has nothing todo with a “round sized up” wheel. Actually the EUC community even wanted KS todo a 18inch with the rectractable trolley style like on the KS16...instead of the high 18S shell...and they listened to the demand!
      Then also soon will be the new KS16 inch wheel, which also is not round, unfortunatly more i cant say now :-)
      Please dont feel offended..but thats what i meant...Owning the first “real” EUC with the Z10....and getting into a lot conclusions without knowing much of the backgrounds. Again...not meaning that as an offense in any way....just trying to make some things more clear.
      When 9b again needs 4 years to bring their next wheel on the market, it can even look ten times more fancy than the Z10...it probably will be to late :-)

    An EUC needs a lot of dedication, but gives (had given to me) the greatest reward. Moving around in the city, not sitting in trafficjam is just priceless. Just got my Z6 two days ago, after an S2.cherrs

    I got the z6 instead of the z10 weeks ago. I also have the ks16s modified with 2.5inch tires. Since i already have a good ewheel in ks16s, i love the looks on the z6 and so bought me one. Z10 is abit overkill for me. Anyways, good vidz, good content, and very well narrated too, thats why i am a subscriber of your channel!

      Thank you! What is the top speed on the Z6? And does it ever feel like it is underpowered? Its not available in the US but I might get a chance to try one on my next trip.

    • @daggyag9613
      @daggyag9613 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OWGAC i believe z6 top is 35kmph and i am not heavy in weight so the z6 doesnt feel underpowered to me at all. Its just always gives me a very smooth glide off from the moment i move off or mount or if i need to tilt forward To accelerate. I tested it and the max distance seems to be 45km. No speeding, just plain cruising speed from start to finish. Also, the z10 comes with soft paddings for the top and bottom part of the wheel whereas z6, there is none. Hence there is no side pad to grip unlike the kingsong ks16s. Anyways, alittle mod here and there and i got my own side soft pads. Now the pads make me feel as one with the wheel. Wobbles are non existent and i can brake or make maneuvers without the feeling of the wheel slipping from under me. Yeah, if ever you can get your hands on a z6, it would be nice to see you do a review. However, i suspect for your size and weight and u already own the z10, u might be disappointed with the z6. Still, if theres anyone who can do a good review, ur the man i would choose.
      Z6 is still a damn good ewheel in my books though. At half the price of the z10, and specs that fit me well, its a no brainer for me.

    Verry nice video, kept me glued to the screen the entire time!!
    I myself own a MiniPro and it is amazing, i kinda need the ease and stability that two wheels can provide and yet it is still small and light enough that i can carry it with me where i want!
    I believe these personal transporters are the present and the future, people just need to try them and they won't be able to resist.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think the mini-pro is cool but that’s probably because I am a huge nerd! =) the issue with it is the limitation on speed since 10mph is too slow for bike lanes and do not offer significant advantage over just walking. It would be very different it is faster and keep up with traffic in a bike lane. It is easier to pick up but I encourage you to try an electric unicycle when you have the chance!

    • @edijsgrincuks607
      @edijsgrincuks607 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hsiang Yeah it's not too fast, but here in Sweden anything over 20kmph is considered a moped with all the requirements of registering it and having helmet and all that stuff, also i catch all the bikes at red lights LOL. And of course if i get the chance i will definitely try a unicicle!!

    Totally agree with you. I have been riding since October 2018. Have a Ninebot E+ and a Z10 (two Segways). When people ask me about them, I tell them, this is what the Segway was supposed to be.
    My problem is, I live in sprawling Orange County California where 6 line streets and highway on-ramps are the norm. So you are right that our environment needs to be conducive to EUC transport. I still feel safer on my bicycle than I do on my Z10 in the street. But the good thing about Orange County is, no one walks, so the sidewalks are empty.
