I mentioned the C6 in my video of cars to buy for $20,000 or less. The problem is $30,000 is sort of a weird in-between area for Corvettes -- not enough to get a C7 or a C6 Z06, but enough that you can probably do a bit better than a C6.

he did say the cost each time a fatal flaw repair was needed... in general, it should be common sense that a flaw that is fatal will cost a few grand to fix. He probably avoided saying any exact numbers because the exact cost will obviously fluctuate greatly depending on the who and where.

1:40 BMW M5 E60 Manual - (In addition to the rod bearings and dual throttle motors: The vanos lines both inside and outside the engine blow, there are 4 vanos solenoids that are very expensive each, the vanos solenoid housings are even more expensive. You also have problems with the 2x ignition coil modules)
3:00 Dodge Challenger SRT8 - Manual option available that gets you an LSD option.
4:14 Dodge Ram SRT10 - Manual option available.
5:20 2015+ S550 Ford Mustang GT - Manual option available.
    6:40 Honda S2000 - Manual transmission.
7:58 Mercedes C63 AMG W204 - No manual available. Headbolt designs rotted the heads of the bolts and lifted the heads and hydro locked the engine. Camshafts were also softer than the bucket lifters, so the cams would wear down. This was all fixed by AMG after 2011 by better bolts and cam materials.
    9:45 Porsche 996 911
    10:45 Toyota 4Runner 2010+ or 2014+ facelift

so repair modifications do nothing to the m5 and c63? do they run reliably after or is it just a matter of time before those problems show up again because of fundamental flaws in the design of their engines themselves?

    • @damascus-ut1ee
      @damascus-ut1ee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@zee9276 Well with the M5, Its mainly luck. Just realize the repair bills are very high if things keep breaking after you’ve fixed one thing, then another, etc. I also highly suspect he only recommended the manual because the automatic version of this car had even more problems. It used a hydraulically actuated clutch to select gears, so an automatic with a clutch like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati were doing at the time. Those solenoids and repairing that add to everything else which is huge, huge money.
You can do the rod bearings to start. But the M5 gets an indicator light on called the cog of death, if you get that it just means you have extensive repair bills coming. And the diagnostic system is so complicated you really need their software.
With the C63, they came out in 07, and you can repair them, but it’s just best to get a 2011+ because no one is going to spend the money of replacing the cams on a pre 2011. Each cam costs $1K and there are four of them. And yes if you replace them without updating the shims (another $1000) then they will just wear again. It’s a TON of labor too. I should emphasize the cams aren’t always worn, but if they are, you’re not going to have a good time. In fact, they’re likely to not be worn, but it’s not like the dealer or private seller is gunna let you pop the valve covers off to inspect. If they’re worn/flaking/chipped then you’ve bought a bomb shell.

Once I had just gotten it back from the shop for a misfire on one of the cylinders, I started it up, waited about 15 seconds, and then it started having a misfire caused by THE SAME ISSUE on a different cylinder. I swear owning an E60 is like the greatest toxic relationship you could be in.

Then do all maintenance. Without exception.
And then nevertheless find yourself looking for cheap spare parts. I can't count how many times I was told "that's no normal car, it doesn't have normal prices for spare parts".

M5 V10: 60.000 euros (some may go for 45-50, but they dont look really good)
Dodge Challenger SRT8: 60-80.000 euros (the diff in price is due to most of the ones we have here are special edition imports so, 80k + euro, but the "normal" ones can be seen for 71k)

Mustang GT: 80.000 euros (the 2.3 ecoboost ones can go for 45-50k)
Honda S2000: 25-50.000 euros (this one is very weird because there are a lot for sale for 40-50k but there are some for 25-30k, so well)
Mercedes C63 Amg: 40.000 euros (could only find the stationwagon ones, my fav to be honest)
    Porsche 996 911: 32-36.000 euros
Toyota 4Runner: Could not find, only very old TD ones for 10-12.000 euros.
    So basically, impossible.
Mx5's here goes for 12-15.000 euros, the NA AND THE NB TOO!

If you're looking for an AMG but trying to avoid the Doug Effect, maybe consider an 05-06 M-B C55 AMG (or any of the cars that use the non-supercharged M113 engine.) Not as flashy, fast, or loud as the C63 that replaced it, so kind of a sleeper.
Pros: No head bolt/stud issues. The simple 5.4L NA V8 has No variable valve timing, no supercharger, and a tractor-like 3 valves per cyl. Engine common issues tend to be centered around oil leaks. One possible trans issue, the conductor plate. The cars are relatively rare, as only about 1,900 sedans were sold in North America. A Euro-spec wagon was available, of which I will be forever jealous. Size--they're about the size of a 2021 corolla, with a 362hp/376tq crammed into a ~3600lb compact sedan. Only 1 recall for some of the sunroofs, dealers are still inspecting/servicing for free. Trunk is a huge and great for bodies, golf clubs, etc.
Cons: Older 5-speed automatic, not as slick as the newer stuff, but it does have paddle shifters. Dated early '00s front end style, which can be updated with a CLK grill conversion. "Basic" interior for a luxury car, and fairly tight back seat. If you can't DIY, it is still a Mercedes, so the dealer will rake you over the coals for basic maintenance. Even if you do DIY, fluids are expensive due to the volume---9L oil changes and 9-12L trans service.
Even Doug liked it, so maybe the Doug Effect has already started? www.autotrader.com/car-news/mercedes-benz-c55-amg-forgotten-awesome-amg-c-class-281474979982007

Most reliable car on that list next to the s2000 but unlike the s2000 your getting a v8 yamaha tuned sleeper. Doug must not be a big fan of the lexus. I would have definitely had it on my list over some of its german competitors with serious reliability issues.

@@JohnCastro reliability should be top priority with cars this age. You can literally drive the lexus without having any real maintenance other than oil changes, and doing breaks and tires. Plus it still looks great. The e92 is so dated in every way.

@@navh9542 not sure how the E92 is any more dated than the ISF, they’re both old cars and have older infotainment but the transmission in the ISF feels far more dated than the DCT in the E92, and you can’t get a manual

Bought a ‘17 mustang gt convertible with performance pack and manual transmission new back in 2017. Had it a year, only put 5000 miles on it. Just not a good daily driver with growing family, so traded it. It was the pearl white, a one year color. Needless to say, I wish I still had that car in the garage and would have just bought a cheap car for my daily. My daughter, who was 11 when I sold it, cried…even though she could barely fit in the back then because she was getting too tall. Lol. Glad to see Doug recognize it on this list…it was a great car.

Just bought a manual E60 M5 with 85k miles and she is a handful!! Definitely have to warm up the 10w 60 before hitting 8,000 rpm’s or you are going to be replacing pumps and bearings but it makes sense why people brand new just started the car and hit the gas that didn’t know. It’s a 500hp race car.

Sure these cars are nice but the Lexus GS350 (4th Gen) should be on the top list too. Bulletproof V6 engine, chassis like the BMW of old, handles like a dream almost like driving a go-cart on rails, tons of fun and although not the bells and whistles and super fast, it's allot of car for the money, great luxury sports sedan plus will outlast any sedan/sports car on this list.

This video is right up my alley as im looking to buy a car any day/week ahead for about 30k. Was very close to going for the C63 but then i wasn't sure about the reliability, was also thinking about E92 M3 or a 335i but kinda same there with poor reliability. Then i was thinking of finding a Supra but thats not easy... Corvette C6 but they are just abit too expensive. Iv probably made my final decision now tho and that will be a Lexus IS-F. Had a LS400 before and never had an issue so i hope the IS-F will be the reliable C63 :)
