I’ve been welding aluminum a couple times a month for probably close to 5 years now and I’ve always sucked. This video explained some of my mistakes better than anyone else has. Thanks Justin!
All I do is aluminum.... It's always tricky and there are no short cuts on cleaning. Cleaning I think is the most important part. It's night and day difference when you start welding. Repairs or working on anything that's been used, painted or powder coated is a pain. I build custom entrance gates and my goal is always to make them strong enough to never ever have one come back for a repair because it can be a nightmare after it's been powder coated.

You have managed to answer a lot of the questions new TIG welders have. Something many experienced teachers fail to realize is many of the aspects of any given skill they think are intuitive or obvious are not intuitive or obvious to inexperienced beginners. I was educated as a classroom & physical education teacher, & gained experience teacher from K thru college level, but it was not until I sustained a brain injury at age 50, that I truly understood what it takes to teach people. The results of the brain injury affect how I now learn. What is obvious to others is not always obvious to me. This has made me especially aware of what it is like to be completely new to a task. Keep this is mind, & you will continue to be a great instructor, continue to improve as one.
I've watched dozens of tig videos over the last few weeks or so and my god...most are mind numbingly slow and boring. Not only are yours the most informative, your no-nonsense style and presentation pace is perfect. Been binging your videos for days and don't plan to stop.
Got my prime weld Tig welder yesterday. I have been watching your videos for days. With the instructions you provided in your videos, I was able to get set up and ready to weld no problem. I have done mig and stick welding, but never Tig. I turned on my machine with the setting you recommend. Did the puddle, and bead exercises I learned from you. I was blown away by the results. You are an excellent teacher if you can get me going this quickly. Thank you so much. On to dipping and weld joints next. Hopefully I will get the same results.
You are the hands down best instructor for Aluminum TIG welding... I have watched countless hours of others videos and tried to begin welding... and struggled. Watching this video and seeing the real simple ways you teach to progress from one stage to another is FANTASTIC. Thank You.
Wow! You are a natural teacher. 3yrs later and your 43 minutes of "relax yourself and you will learn this" took all the tension (I'm one of those "stiff dudes" lol!) out of learning, and allows one to FLOW with confidence. This vid got you a like & sub! Well done and thanks! -Mr Stiffy! lol!

Best TIG instructional video in the history of TH-cam. Thank you for this much needed video. I have had a TIG welder for a year and I’m chomping at the bit to find time to get started. Thanks man
This video! Im 47 and just starting to learn TIG. I been migging my whole life. This video is money! Number one, get comfy. Number 2 , do NOT pull the torch away until off the pedal! Instinct was making me pull the torch away before off the pedal fully. Must hold until it's off a second! Those 2 tips are huge in itself!
The best advice my father gave me qhile teaching me the trade was "get comfortable" it sounds mondaine but its extremely important and probably the first thing you should learn. So when this man says " get comfortable" within the first minute of teaching. I immediately know this guy is a good teacher and knows his craft. Great stuff sir!
I’ve got to agree - Justin you are a fabulous teacher, this is brilliant instruction. Right balance of “formal” teaching and realism. That’ll be a sub and a thumb!

This is this single best weld vid for a beginners on TH-cam ( and I wouldn't like to count how many ours I've watched) after having my welder for a week I felt like I was going backwards, so obsessed with making nice welds and figuring I just needed to practice (loads of Argon) i lost site of the basics, essential to a nice weld. Thanks for sharing your skills.
Hey Justin, I've been a follower for about 2 years now, I found your channel when I just got started TIG welding car parts in my garage (Intercoolers, Intakes, Radiators, Headers, Turbo Kits) you name it... I just finished up my first week as a high purity sanitary welder for pharmaceuticals and honesty, can't thank you enough for indirectly teaching me 90% of what I've learned in just a short amount of time. Keep the videos coming, hopefully they'll help out beginners and enthusiasts as much as your old videos helped me out back in the day. Still learning everyday though man!
Gotta say i REALLY appreciate that you give measurements in metric aswell. Most other welding channels are really hard for me to understand as we dont use the imperial system in NZ.
I have been a student of tig welding for 5 years. Took the balancing of torch tip and used it today. It made the control of the torch, feeding of the filler and heat control a thousand times easier. I wished i had that info from the first tig welding class i took years ago.
Like the old saying-- PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE- but having someone like you to help you get started doing it correctly will certainly speed up your game. Tks
I've been teaching myself TIG welding for a month or two now. I've watched videos here and there from a variety of contributors, trying to do the things they demonstrate, with moderate success, but lots of "I wonder why...?" thoughts. I'm never quite sure if I'm really doing it right or how to even know for sure. I learned more in this video than in all the others combined and--more importantly--I now have a much better sense for what is and isn't good welding, and enough of an understanding of what causes the problems that I'm sure my results will quickly improve. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate and explain. Great content!
Thank you Justin. I have been stick welding for years and for the first time I bought a primeweld tig machine after watching your videos. I am a beginner again and your videos cut down on the mistakes and give direction on what to practice and how to practice.. what to look for and so much more. I miss the live welding videos. Keep sharing, your community appreciates you!
Justin, this was absolutely the BEST "intro to tig" video I have ever seen! Thank you for sharing! There are comments from previous students complimenting your teaching, as well as comments from those with zero experience indicating that they'd give tig a try just based upon your explanation of the process. This speaks volumes to your ability to communicate effectively! Enjoy your week! Be safe!
OK I have to say this is probably the most beneficial lesson I have ever seen on getting started. I really appreciate the extreme simplification. I tried to get started 1.5 years ago, and while I was able to put down OK beads, I was never consistent. I got frustrated and went back to MIG. Well in this lesson where you had us just make a series of dots, I was finally able to figure out the relationship between heat, time, arc length and travel. I now understand when the puddle forms and what to look for to keep it in check. Next step, I will try filler, but just putting down consistent 1/4" "starter beads" was awesome. Thank You!!!
Been trying to learn and on my own trying to watch every video I can. Have welded most of my life of 58 years young and this video showed me things I had never seen. Goin to go try the practicing you just did. Wish I could come to some of your classes. Thanks for making this video
I literally have zero welding experience. I have been watching and reading everything I can find online, but this is the best info I have received . Thanks so much. I am going to lay my 1st welds this evening
You sir are a great teacher. This is exactly what I was looking for, as someone who has never welded before. I never grew up with shop or anything like that so I am about as beginner as you can get. But at 30 I am sure that I can learn to tig weld through my attention to detail and repetition (lots of practice). I will no doubt be rewatching your videos over and over for reference. Thanks for sharing- you truly have a gift of teaching. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with such clarity that even complete beginners such as myself can understand the fundamentals.
Hands down, the absolute best beginners vid I've seen. Been hesitant not really knowing where to start with aluminum (local school, still sallying out). Thanks for getting me started.
I'm brand new to TIG. I've watched a number of intro videos. This is the best. Very clear explanation of the GOAL and the reasons for NOT attaining it, as well as how to attain it. Thank you!
The single best instruction video I’ve ever seen. Thank you. I’ve been welding for 50 years. I just learned so many excellent TIG tips on aluminum. What an amazing teacher.
THE best video I have seen for beginners. Showing how to hold the torch, tungsten to material gap, the effect of being too far away or too close........ just brilliant. Could you record one using steel and another welding sheet material?
I did my first successful butt weld on a 6mm mild steel plate at 212 amps. High amps helped me break all the frustration of cooking up the base metal. Thank you. You're the best teacher
Thank you for this video. I have years worth of mig welding experience but I have never tried tig welding. After watching this I think I'm ready to start giving it a shot.
Tried TIG for the first time today. Basically because my work has the equipment and no one to use it. Your video just described my entire day; good, bad or otherwise. Watching your video post inconsistent results clarified everything I did wrong as well as what I did right. Thank you for the clear explanations. Cheers to hope for a better tomorrow!
This by far was one of the best Tig training vids i've found. Very informative, very intertaining, you kept me watching and listening. You make a very good trainer, thank you. I'm over 50 now and have been arc welding (stick) all my life since i worked as a welders helper in a gas plant in my early teens and I've always wanted to learn Tig just never been around it. I do not consider myself a welder but have always welded what I want to make or need to repair. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge.
great Video, I am an older guy who learned gas welding as a kid in school, and its all i had ever used for everything. After seeing your videos, it inspired me to learn something new, So I Picked up the HTP tig, and just started learning....only doing it to learn, and enjoy the experience. I really enjoy your videos and learn something new each time, and it has really made a difference. Thanks for doing these ...wish they were more often lol
I LOVE your teaching style! Far too many pros don't even realize that they're taking for granted the little details that they've been doing for years, and they leave many holes in their teaching that leave the students lost. I like how you drill on each point, without advancing too quickly to the next step. I especially like how you keep reiterating "This is under YOUR control...so CONTROL it!". The only thing I didn't see or hear (unless I just flat missed it) was holding the proper angle of the gun, which is a vital point (again, sorry if I missed it). Outstanding teaching video!!
Wow this was extremely helpful! I just got my primeweld 225x and never tig welded before. I started off slow made sure I was comfortable, and just started doing the exercises in this video in the course of an hour I was getting decent looking lines of weld with the filler. Thank you so much. I love how you focus on the basics to get good results.
After hundreds of TIG welding vids this is the first one that really appeals to me! It is the first and only vid I found that not merely shows off the presenter's skill or talk Amp setting and charts etc, but only shows what does go wrong. I've a couple of horribly looking beads on steel and aluminium and was totally lacking interpretation skills. Everyone says "practize you simply need to practize then it'll sort itself out". This of course is total BS because for practizing to make any sense, to enabled progress, I need to know what error I am looking at. And this is where theory and charts don't help. Your coupons with failed beads + prcise explanation which error a certain bead-appearance is pointing to is a very great help! Excellent vid, thank you very much! Please post more failure reading / interpretation vids, that's the only way people like will be able to infer what to do change for the next bead.😍
You guys are awesome. I'm glad you got this out. It makes a great primer for your live series. Also, anyone reading this, *go take a class!* I'm still digesting and practicing what I learned from my single session. My goal is to hit the road and revisit LV next time I head back to LA.
Thanks man, I'm about to get started, I've finally accumulated all the gear and needed to get my head around what I'm trying to achieve with this process. That is the best explanation of basic TIG I have seen yet. AWESOME. It's given me the info needed. cheers scott
I'm not a welder but would love to learn. I learned more in this 45 minutes than years of coworker lessons and TH-cam tutorials. Thanks for doing what you do.
Watched your video yesterday. I can’t thank you enough. Your advice and experience has created a whole new perspective for me. I went through 2 80 cubic feet tanks of argon and probably 10 pounds + of 4043 1/16th” and 1/8” in a 24 hour period with my new found knowledge. My welds went from crap to structurally sound. I’ve listened to too many and overthinking to …..Dayyuummm……my welds are consistent and structural. I’m certified with all other aspects of welding except TIG. The “balance” point helped me ditch the natural trimmers I have due to military crap. I was also doing the lift arc vs. high freq…….huge HUGE difference for me. Thank you so much man !!!
You are an absolute credit to the TH-cam welding community. Such great information, really nicely presented and easy to understand. Brother it was your videos that answered a lot of the questions I had/still have, learning to TIG. Hats off to you sir.
Man thank you. Finally moving forward now. Been welding wire and stick forever. Even welded with a torch many years ago in Aircraft maintenance school. But the tig was road blocking me. You got me past that block. Thanks.
thank you so much for this video!! I can only speak for myself, but im sure I could've cobbled some tig welds together without any training.. and this video puts us MILES forward in our progress! keep up the good work
Im an HVAC guy and run my own business now at 28. I started at 22. Took me only 6 years bc I grinded for knowledge and chose who to listen to well and I can say this guy is the real deal. I've met a couple guys like him here who care about teaching and take pride in their work and knowledge and anyone out there watching TH-cam videos about this trade or any other trade keep guys like this close and pay close attention when you do stumble upon them whether real life or a video. Great lesson, I was just interested how welding is done since I braze and solder aluminum/copper types.
Just picked up an Eastwood Tig 200 Ac/Dc machine. This video is by far the best I have come across yet that explains what and why things happen the way they do. I tried just jumping into making beads and adding filler with out really understanding the process. This is a great video ,for someone like me, to get them to understand and show just how to start out correctly.
I have to say, I was impressed with this seemingly basic information. I watched and listened and really considered what you said. I went out later and put into practice those simple tips and my stainless steel welds turned out GREAT and NOT like the burned out, grey overheated mass that I'd be too embarrassed to show. I don't have foot pedal, but my control via 2T was so much better. I have colors in my welds now :-) Thank you for the useful tips and the great info your videos provide.
Just wanted to say that you are a great teacher mate, and it's very generous of you to share your knowledge! Being one myself, I say this having had years on the tools and time in front of classrooms. Top marks!
Having done Justin's class, this is really valuable information. I would really recommend an in-person class if you found this valuable. Me personally, I did not work well when he was staring over my shoulder, but we found a great in between that goes to how he is a great teacher.
I was impressed by his ability to look just like an oral surgeon sitting at the corner of the table. 😂 In all seriousness, I think that demonstrates that a great welder will have great body awareness.
I’ve only been welding for 3 years now n I’m just learning tig. My welding skills increases dramatically once I realized the trick to laying a good weld is simply being in a comfy position that won’t have my body stressing out half way threw laying a 2ft long weld.
Interesting that he mentioned the “magnetic radiation” thing because right before I watched this video I was thinking of researching the electro magnetic radiation hazards of Tig welding.
There is no electro magnetic hazard associated with TIG welding. The high frequency start might theoretically have an impact but it only lasts a fraction of a second and is very low power. When welding DC there is literally no physical way for electro magnetic fields to generate. Welding with AC at around 100Hz or so has negligible impact compared to all the hundreds of power lines already around you
@@billshuey7422 yeah but the context was to keep the leads on your lap. Obviously, the UV emission of TIG is one of the strongest, and as the process is tipically slower, also the exposure is longer; however, shielding is relatively easy so unless one makes a mistake (or welds without basic PPE) there shouldn't be much concern
Greetings from Australia my friend. Oh my goodness! Watched this and just accomplished something on alloy in 10min that I havent been able to do in frustrating months! The puddle pool, sparkles then wait for mirror, just wow! I actually laid a nice weld! Thank you thank you! I'll be praising you far and wide! Regards, Nick
Thank you for what I can only say is the best welding tutorial video I've ever seen. You kept it simple and reinforced the points you were making and took us through how it should look and what was causing the problems with the defective welds. Still learning everyday though man!
Thanks for the original content! This was very helpful in adjusting my form for holding the torch.
I appreciate you watching and wish you the best!
Amongst one of the best instructors I have watched. A pleasure to follow.
Credit where credits is due, you’re a brilliant instructor. Clear, concise and practically real for anyone to listen and understand. Thank you.
You hit it out of the park with that one. I can confidently take on TIG welding now. Best welding videos online, PERIOD!!
Justin, you are awesome!, the best teacher ever for Tig Welding class.
Gotta say i REALLY appreciate that you give measurements in metric aswell. Most other welding channels are really hard for me to understand as we dont use the imperial system in NZ.
THIS IS A VERY THOROUGH VIDEO, YOU COVER IT SO WELL, THANK YOU.
Be safe!
Thanks for the video. Best welding instructional video I've seen yet. Just getting back into welding after 25 years, love your style.
I just started learning to tig weld on my 225x and this video has been the single best video on youtube to get me started.
Welding school I attended didn’t even touch on the aluminum subject. I’m learning with you. Thank you!
That’s crazy I’m on my second semester and we are already 2 weeks into aluminum tig and tig. But I’m going for an associates degree in fab and welding
This guy is a great teacher if u need to teach urself tho, he’s helped me get ahead of my class for sure
Unbelievable instruction!! The best yet!
This was the most informational video iv ever seen for practicing good technique and basic for tig welding! Good job Justin keep the videos coming!
Thank you for this video. I have years worth of mig welding experience but I have never tried tig welding. After watching this I think I'm ready to start giving it a shot.
Man I've got to come to one of your classes.
You were BEAUTIFULLY explained all the concepts. Thank
great Video, I am an older guy who learned gas welding as a kid in school, and its all i had ever used for everything.
Your videos are so awesome! Your teaching style is easy for me to relate to. Please keep the videos coming, your helping people out tremendously!
The best welding training video on the web
You guys are awesome. I'm glad you got this out. It makes a great primer for your live series. Also, anyone reading this, *go take a class!* I'm still digesting and practicing what I learned from my single session. My goal is to hit the road and revisit LV next time I head back to LA.
What's going on in LV? Only tig welding? What type of p aye should I expected to get out that way?
I’ve never done AL but a lot of tig SS.
At 16:00 when you showed what I should look for with the puddle is the answer I came here for. Thanks bro.
This is priceless instruction, very relaxed and straightforward way to share your knowledge.. Thank you!
Best tig lesson I’ve ever watched
Thanks man, I'm about to get started, I've finally accumulated all the gear and needed to get my head around what I'm trying to achieve with this process. That is the best explanation of basic TIG I have seen yet. AWESOME. It's given me the info needed. cheers scott
I'm not a welder but would love to learn. I learned more in this 45 minutes than years of coworker lessons and TH-cam tutorials. Thanks for doing what you do.
This is absolutely top notch and has helped me immensely. Thanks Justin!
Thanks.
Starting TIG Classes in 2 weeks. This is so helpful! Always great tips and advice! Thank you
The best lesson for beginners. Very clear and simple and easy to follow. Thanks - helped me a lot to start with tig welding.
"This is NOT like sipping tea" hahaha 😆 awesome vid justin. Classic TFS style 👌
Just echoing the comments below -- the best intro to tig I have ever seen.
thank you so much for this video!! I can only speak for myself, but im sure I could've cobbled some tig welds together without any training.. and this video puts us MILES forward in our progress! keep up the good work
Excellent teacher. I plan on watching all of your videos. Thank you for your time and support of the hobby. One love
Next time I’m in Vegas I’m taking your class! Love your videos, love the content, and love the honesty.
Thanks!❤
Im an HVAC guy and run my own business now at 28. I started at 22. Took me only 6 years bc I grinded for knowledge and chose who to listen to well and I can say this guy is the real deal. I've met a couple guys like him here who care about teaching and take pride in their work and knowledge and anyone out there watching TH-cam videos about this trade or any other trade keep guys like this close and pay close attention when you do stumble upon them whether real life or a video.
Great lesson, I was just interested how welding is done since I braze and solder aluminum/copper types.
I just came here to say... Just got my new machine dialed in, and your video set me straight and got me sorted. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial. I’ll be trying all this on the weekend. Looking forward to more learning and knowing more about what’s happening.👍
I have colors in my welds now :-)
Thank you for the useful tips and the great info your videos provide.
Aweeee yeaaaahh. I like the garage style like it used to be
Just wanted to say that you are a great teacher mate, and it's very generous of you to share your knowledge!
When I went to class it was like Patrick Swayze at the pottery wheel in Ghost!
@@kq2799 Where do I sign up? Ha Ha
Justin has helped me understand so many things in just a few days. Im now comfortable on welding my boat repairs.
I was impressed by his ability to look just like an oral surgeon sitting at the corner of the table. 😂
In all seriousness, I think that demonstrates that a great welder will have great body awareness.
Burning the tooth nerve with a TIG torch.
I’ve only been welding for 3 years now n I’m just learning tig. My welding skills increases dramatically once I realized the trick to laying a good weld is simply being in a comfy position that won’t have my body stressing out half way threw laying a 2ft long weld.
This is one skilled, trained, thoughtful educator! Marvelous job, sir!
My welder is still in the mail, 😂
Damn he taught this better then my welding teacher
Interesting that he mentioned the “magnetic radiation” thing because right before I watched this video I was thinking of researching the electro magnetic radiation hazards of Tig welding.
TIG, I believe is the most hazardous. The "smoke" from both Stick and MIG block some of te radiation

Sorry electromagnetic spectrum includes UVA
I was referring to the part of the spectrum you would call ultraviolet
@@billshuey7422 yeah but the context was to keep the leads on your lap. Obviously, the UV emission of TIG is one of the strongest, and as the process is tipically slower, also the exposure is longer; however, shielding is relatively easy so unless one makes a mistake (or welds without basic PPE) there shouldn't be much concern
My wireless earbuds do not like AC tig
Greetings from Australia my friend.
Oh my goodness! Watched this and just accomplished something on alloy in 10min that I havent been able to do in frustrating months! The puddle pool, sparkles then wait for mirror, just wow!
I actually laid a nice weld!
Thank you thank you!
I'll be praising you far and wide!
Regards,
Nick
Thanks!
Thank you for what I can only say is the best welding tutorial video I've ever seen. You kept it simple and reinforced the points you were making and took us through how it should look and what was causing the problems with the defective welds.
I've been MIG/MAG welding for quite a while (hobby stuff mostly) and have recently started using a lift arc TIG setup (DC only) for Mild Steel but have learned a lot from your video.
Flew to Vegas on my birthday to take a class on the 4th. Best thing I could've done for my 50th. Thank you both for giving me the a b c's to take home and practice . ill be back for your fab class when I I get my beads down pat! Thank you!-
Appreciate this video. Super helpful to me as a noob welder.
I am just starting out with TIG (not professionally) and I watched many videos.
This one Justin, is the best.
Great starter exercises and examples as well as problems and causes.
I cannot wait to get back out in the garage and start all over again with your exercises and examples.
Thank you.
The best teaching of TIG beginner vid. Huge thanks.
