A herd of Asian elephants in southwest China's Yunnan Province has stunned the world with an unprecedented northbound trek, sparking curiosity, concern and widespread debate. Following their "long march" of more than a year, the giants are now slowly moving southward.
Back in June, a CGTN crew followed the elephants on their tracks. The journey provides a unique insight into how local authorities are responding to the challenge of keeping both the animals and the people they come across safe. The crew also traveled to the original habitat of the elephants in Xishuangbanna to learn more about China's efforts to protect the endangered species and defuse conflict between the animals and humans.

It's evolution, the modern Elephants demand a better-tasting diet than leaves & grass, they know corn, melons, pumpkins, sugar cane, rice plants, isn't available in the jungle, they need a veggie farm in the park for them.

There is an amazing documentary about a group of African elephant family who had a baby kidnapped by another family of elephants. Elephants have an innate instinct to migrate. Confining them in restricted areas will not work. Elephants need large areas where to roam. This is how nature works. As the elephants are very destructive with respect to vegetation they consume because of their voracious apatite, their migration to other areas gives time for the areas the elephants had previously herded upon to regenerate its vegetation. A circular migration system must be created whereby the elephants are allowed enough space to herd in circular fashion until the time that the vegetation of their previous herding grounds have been fully regenerated and replenished with vegetation whereby the elephants would again turn back to their original feeding pastures.

Hearing people say things like crops can be grown again but once the elephants are gone it will be forever. And people happy to work in tourism available because of the elephants. Such a great thing to be planning food supplies and using parked trucks to keep the elephants away from trouble... this is one of the best stories I've ever heard of in which no one blames the elephants. I cannot say that people in my country would treat them so lovingly. Huge congratulations are due for all those working to make this journey positive for all involved!
