People don't seem to remember why Shao Kahn did it. He did it because Kung Lao had already been defeated in the tournament by Scorpion. But Kung Lao in his arrogance still came in to fight despite having already been eliminated from the tournament. This is why he intervened.
As for Liu Kang, in MK9, he was following Raiden's lead due to the visions he was having. Problem was the visions still came to pass, but with different outcomes( i.e. sub zero (Kuai Liang) becoming Cyber Sub Zero instead of Smoke). It was this and other events that led to Liu Kang losing faith in Raiden. By the time Raiden figured out what needed to be done, it was too late. Valuable allies were killed and sacrificed, he lost his most faithful disciple to anger and frustration. Which led to those two and others becoming revenants. A little story time in case someone wanted a refresher.

I don't know why but Liu Kang telling Raiden you killed us all is one of the saddest moments to cut deep in MK in my opinion. Raiden really gave his all in trying to prevent Armageddon and to ensure that people won't die from his visions. But despite his attempts, almost everyone turned on him. And later he even turns on himself. Raidens been through the most during MK9-MK11
It is insanely fun gameplay wise but some of the alterations to the story were straight up bad and ended up being wasted. Especially the revenants half of them were screwed over permanently

Raiden finally realizes “He Must Win” refers to Shao Khan. Shao Khan broke multiple rules during this pivotal Mortal Kombat tournament, but the Elder Gods couldn’t intervene because Raiden kept prolonging the tournament through his actions without realizing it. Liu Kang thought Raiden was off his rocker and refused to back down, which resulted in a fight between them and Raiden having to kill Liu Kang. In the end, Raiden lets Shao Kahn win, the rule breaking is complete, and the Elder Gods pump Raiden with their power so he can annihilate Shao Khan.
The thing is about liu kang if he were to defeat shao khan he would come back with armeggeddon and win and for kung lao shao khan snapped his neck and by mortal kombat rules raiden can only participate when directly challenged

Remember Quan Chi turned Hanzo Hasashi into Scorpio (his first revenant) but Hanzo Hasashi (now Scorpio) just wanted to avenge his family and tribe and nothing else and this Quan Chi knew beforehand that Hanzo Hashashi is man of tough principles and not a corrupt soul and a very old guy (toughest to change), thats why He morphed into Sub Zero and did all this cause he knew Hanzo will listen to Quan Chi only upto a limit and after that Scorpio is of no use (which we all know is true) and this way atleast Quan Chi got Noob Sibot cause we all know Bi han is corrupt to the core! It’s even better when you realise that when the whole timeline collision happened and the past and present met up in the kolosseum, Raiden says that Kung Lao had just defeated Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Moments later in MK9, Kung Lao defeats Kintaro and gets his neck snapped.
Kung Lao died on his own after winning and on showboating you knew for a fact he was begging just to be hit up with this neck snap. As for Liu Kang if he had waited and his fate wasn't destroyed at this point he would still be alive but the fight was Shao Khan would be so much harder

MK5 (aka Deadly Alliance): At the very opening plot, Shang Tsung shows up to challenge Liu Kang, gets his ass beat, only for Quan Chi to drop a sneak attack on Liu Kang...enabling Shang Tsung to get the upper hand and snap that neck like the weak fucker that Shang Tsung is. (Note that unlike just about any other neck snap, Shang Tsung struggles like mad to do it...) So Liu Kang's dead, didn't get to clap Kitana's cheeks, and then you got the crazy events of MK5-7 (Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon)...and methinks Deception brought Liu Kang back as just a zombie.
Mans should've passed the title to Kung Lao and just went for the pussy.

Quan chi told them.Quan Chi cannot turn them revenants against their will. So he needed that hate to turn them into revenants. Remember Quan Chi turned Hanzo Hasashi into Scorpio (his first revenant) but Hanzo Hasashi (now Scorpio) just wanted to avenge his family and tribe and nothing else and this Quan Chi knew beforehand that Hanzo Hashashi is man of tough principles and not a corrupt soul and a very old guy (toughest to change), thats why He morphed into Sub Zero and did all this cause he knew Hanzo will listen to Quan Chi only upto a limit and after that Scorpio is of no use (which we all know is true) and this way atleast Quan Chi got Noob Sibot cause we all know Bi han is corrupt to the core! ( he may have not killed Hanzo family) but he was corrupt way before. Remember Quan Chi also worahipped a God (Evil) Shinnok so he knew stuff just like Raiden did.

I like how one thing both of them regret to inform about kung laos desth is that raiden got so unbelievably pissed he was about to fry shao Khan alive (which if i remember right is against the rules of mortal kombat for him specifically to participate) so he was willing to break the rules just because of how angry he was over his death
They both had it coming to be truthful. Raiden can only do so much with having two screw-ups along with a screwed vision and not a well-thought-out plan.
What’s so cool about this is it’s revealed in basically every timeline raiden kills lui kang in one way or another it made the story so juicy for me

It’s even better when you realise that when the whole timeline collision happened and the past and present met up in the kolosseum, Raiden says that Kung Lao had just defeated Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Moments later in MK9, Kung Lao defeats Kintaro and gets his neck snapped.

Kung Lao died on his own after winning and on showboating you knew for a fact he was begging just to be hit up with this neck snap. As for Liu Kang if he had waited and his fate wasn't destroyed at this point he would still be alive but the fight was Shao Khan would be so much harder
