    A few years ago, when I was 70, I decided to spend one winter sleeping outside. I set up a 4-person tent, then put a 2-person one inside. I covered the frame of the smaller tent with a couple of survival blankets, then a quilt over that. I put interlocking plastic mats on the floor. 3 inch foam for my mattress, covered with a heated mattress cover. Topped it with a flannel sheet and sleeping bag. An hour before bedtime, I'd plug in the mattress cover. Kept me warm in -30C weather.

    OMG, Jay! There were a few times during this video that I literally laughed out loud! Who would set up THREE RBM tents, one inside the other, then a bivvy tent, too? Only you, Jay. And I thank you for doing it. Made me laugh. That steak also made me a little jealous. Listening to all that eclectic mix of jams all night long was the cherry on top. Too fun!!

    Great stove. I have one on order now. My friends Matti and Stina run a dog sled/canoe tour company above the circle in Sweden. They have used the same stove for many years to cook and boil water for the sled dogs. Lot of snow to melt every day. They hold up to big pots. Crazy camp with that many tents. Pure survival ability. Do the hot tent chimney pipe holes line up? See, easy to make a vid close to home. Just go out and do it. You'll see.

    Jay did you get the other 2 parts for that sleeping system? It is a 3 part military sleeping system…a thing green mummy bag, a black heavy mummy bag, and the Gortex Bivi-bag. Using all 3 will keep you somewhat warm down to -50F. Trick is use a poncho liner down at the bottom to keep your feet warm and it may sound crazy but only wear a pair of shorts to bed. That way your body heat warms the inside of the bag and the dead space in between each bag, just like layering clothes. I spent 20 years in the military and done right you can stay pretty warm.

    "Gotta duck!" or "Got a duck!" or both! :) Jay, I've been using MSR naptha stoves since the 80a. after you heat the stove, blow it out ompletely and then open the valve and start it. If you turn on the fuel while the heating fire is still going, it will flare up for awhile until it settles down. Sometimes it wont settle down and it has to be turned off and re-started. So best to get into the habit of: heat it up, blow it out, open the value and start. Thanks for the fun video!

    • @jaylegere
      @jaylegere  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome tip. Thanks

    • @plextoob
      @plextoob 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jaylegere A little more detail on the stove starting. The point is to keep the stove hot enough to vapourize the fuel when it travels thtough the pipe, in the usual way.If you blow it out, start it as fast as you can. I usually have the lighter flame going, blow out and light the stove. If its very cold you may not be able to do this and have to put up with the flare up on start. Just be careful if you have anything overhead. Soon you will equate the loudness of the stove with relaxation and enjoyment. :) Also, you may have to clean out the jet from time to time and also the pump. They can get gummed up with carbon - even the pump can pull carbon out of the fuel and get glogged. And make sure you put the jet cleaner pin the right way, its easy to put upside down. Best to do a completely breakdown of it at home so you are aquainted with it and not have to fiddle with all the parts for the first time outside. Enjoy!

    A gorgeous beautiful Blue-Bird Day in the NWT. This tent idea is a great test review @ Jay Legere! @Jay your videos need more of that fast interesting little dog that you had in a TH-cam video >a week ago. It was nice with the dog and cottage guest but don't get me wrong this tent testing idea is excellent stuff. I also appreciated the new cooking gear with the liquid fuel stove, kettle and new surroundings stuff. The Mora is a nice device but there are so many much more cool blades out there that you can be modeling. I mentioned the other day after you asked the viewers what we want to see that to have more content with you commuting to and from the locations would make it much more cool and interesting. Then days later I see a missed opportunity for getting personal and first person with the viewers as the view switches to 3rd person and both you and the viewer are seeing as if operating the vehicle. There are production and editing loses occurring in your video shoots and I am simply suggesting try more things and make some stuff more regular.

    Remember the fireman who drove on the ice and sunk his week old F350? He ignored the sign that said stay off the ice, the one right outside the firehall. Love Yellowknife.
    Edit: military grade means made by the cheapest price possible. Don't cover your face, you get moisture in your bivvy bag which gets your sleeping bag wet which means cold.

    Hey Jay...Very cool video. Just some advise. When you were unzipping the insulated floor from the tent, I wouldn't pull zippers apart like that. As you run thr risk of damaging the zipper and it won't properly zip up or possibly rip the zipper seam.

    I have the UP-5 and have camped out in -40 F. Of course I was using the tent stove, but you don't need a lot of heat in these tents. When I first started camping with it, I banked the fire good to keep warm at night. Wound up having to open the door and windows because it got over 90 F inside with -20 F or so outside. Never thought to try it will just body heat. Nice to see that is a survivable option. Even more since my Rottie and Husky are my tent buddies.
    I will say the only downside to the UP-5 is the weight. Well worth it for a comfortable night's sleep though.
    Oh, and in case you didn't figure it out: The tent bag for the UP tents feels like there's lots of "extra" space. Compared to most tent bags, that is. However, you can stuff the footprint in the bag so it's all together. This puts that "loose" bag back to a very tight fit as per most tent bags.

I Whatched you develop your channel from having a very primitive approach to what you established now. Jay you eat so much salt you make feel like Im normal, and meat nothing should stand still for too long around you.
