  • Vice grip garage style rescue. Can we get this 1979 Bertram 28 that we bought, sight unseen, running again and drive it 1400 miles on the water back home to Florida?
Doing part of the great loop in a boat I bought sight unseen across the country. We take this 1979 Bertram 28 from Massachusetts down to Fort Lauderdale, the boating capitol of the world.
This first trip for episode one is from Mattapoisett MA to a small harbor near New Port CT. We ran slow in complete darkness and freezing temperatures but made it safely.
We encountered trouble with one of the 270 Crusader motors which is basically a marine small block Chevy sbc. Found a new distributor cap and got her going.
Follow along as we make our way across the country North to South and pass many ports and beautiful cities and towns on this section of the great loop by boat.

Enjoying the series and the adventure. On my 1975 28 the outlets only work when on shore (a/c) power. Unless you have an inverter. It does look like the electrical system on that boat did undergo an upgrade for sure compared to mine as I still have the tube fuses. On the Great Lakes, we don't see as many gremlins with the older electrical systems - but an upgrade is on the list for this coming winter layup. Thanks for taking time to video and then edit the footage so we can live vicariously through you!

David you’re correct and I felt like an idiot when I plugged in to shore power for the first time. Now that she’s home I’m working on solar and electric upgrades to hopefully have power all the time.
Thanks for watching and I’ll start adding videos again soon. The transmission repair has taken much longer than expected so I haven’t had much to film… plenty of time to daydream about getting her back on the water

@@BobHGarage Do you attribute the transmission failure to "Barking" the engines when running hard in rough seas ? I wondered if maybe the soft groundings had more to do with it...and perhaps, even if the engines had only 3XX hours on them, was that original or since a rebuild? The reason I ask is that Last season was my first with our boat - but it has rebuilt engines and transmissions with 100 hours (when I bought it)...put about 110 hours on them last summer but did have the occasion in a rough Northern Lake Michigan chop to briefly cavitate the props on two or three occasions.

I don’t have his number anymore and wouldn’t recommend him anyways. He broke my flybridge windshield and then concealed it so I wouldn’t notice until after he got payment and left
