Picking Boats by the Side of the Road - Potential Gem Discovered - 28' Bertram for 30K!

- On a very short 5 mile stretch of Rt. 25 in the North Fork of Long Island we discovered 4 relatively nice fishing boats for sale with the creme of the crop (in my opinion) definitely being the 28' Bertram flybridge that sports the thumbnail for this video.
Is it old? Yes, undoubtedly it's gonna have some pain points if you own it given it's almost 50 year age, but man o man is it beautiful and with what I believe are gas inboards, should be relatively easy to maintain.
In addition to the Bertram, we get to see a 21' Release, a 25' ProLine and a classic 13' Whaler. Which would you pick and why?

I knew that boat was your pick as soon as you mentioned it.
I owned a 13' Whaler and a 28' Bertram way back when John. I ran that Bertram offshore Tuna fishing quite a few times. Terrific boat that never let me down & ran great in rough water. Can't go wrong with that Bertram IMHO! 👍👍
Wow....two legends!
The Release would be my choice, those I beam aluminum trailers are expensive. Nice job.
That bert is such a cool rig. Would love to have one 😎
3 stations is crazy on that Bert, but hey, free country. Unless those engines are new, it’s not a $30k boat. I would have skipped one of the stations and put that money into a hardtop or tower and some isinglass 🤷🏻♂️. That said, I love these boats and would probably give him $18-19k tomorrow
That Bert is an $8,500 boat at best. I've seen 10 in Virginia and North Carolina same shape for under $10k and they are not moving!
Wow. I'm surprised at those prices. I know there's a restored 31 selling for 250 at my boatyard. I get the 31 is more desirable but still....that's a big swing
You are correct I don’t know who would spend even that on the 28 nobody wants them 31 has an occult following.seen a few abandoned by me for rent
@jiggingjerks I bet your buddy put $150k into his 31. People will do that with the 31, not the 28!
I did some research on release boats when I was looking to buy. Alot of complaints about wiring and poor components.
Dude, the bird poo in the middle is making me go cross eyed. Cmon man…….
Yup, I know. Believe me, I tried cleaning it before filming.
45 large for that pro line that's nuts maybe i need to sell my hydra sport with 2017 twin 200 two strokes with about 150 to 200 hours with trailer ??? on the south shore
Any inboard gas boat is not moving. BTW...the dirt on the windshield is killing me, lol
Yeah, it was bird poop. I actually cleaned the windshield for 5 minutes but I think just made it worse
It’s on your phone …lol
I would say 2 strokes are more reliable than 4S. You won't see any 4S still running 50 years later.
Interesting observation .
Absolutely I ran a 671 j&t 310 hp for 20 years you can't kill them . Single screw never towed in and fished 80 miles often
Cmon, how could you skip over taking a look at the Sea Ray right next to the Bert? I know you’re a fishing boat guy but those SR from those years are really nice boats.
My bad.
Hey John ..I got a guy that wants to upgrade on boats and needs guidance..can you help???
Please get back to me ASAP..he's a good fishing buddy

Do you know anything about the wellcraft steplift? Is it worth to buy one, I see some that are all rotted but all fiberglass on the outside?
Very desirable if in condition. Like all fiberglass boats, if rotted, will require big $$$$ to restore and likely better off with something more modern.
The v20 is the best 20ft hull possibly ever made. My pop has one for about 4 years and it rode better then his Grady 25 sailfish. If you can find one in good shape then you're golden. There are tons on marketplace but a good amount are I/o or need a new outboard. Which buying used you should probably do regardless.
you can get in a lot of trouble with a 13 whaler with a 40 2 stroke!!! lol
I just don't get it. Do people seriously get those prices?!?! USED boats. BOATS!!!!!! And that pro line is a 90s 😂😆😂 WTF. You should come down my way around Philly. Boats are no lie a third for the same thing. That Pro Line when it was brand new wasn't over $60 grand 😂😆😂 in the 90s. That Bertram better have brand new yanmars for 30k. I just can't
Bought for 55k selling for 55k 6 years later
A 22 year old Proline (Proline is now closed down) roller trailer of similar age with the second worst marine outboards ever made the Opti Pop's for $43k, this is the definition of buying someone else's problem. Good luck finding a mechanic that is both willing and has the ability to service those engines then get ready for huge service bills to take care of those temperamental POS's. I would not buy that boat for $25k, engines and trailer are junk, I'm sure the electronics are the same vintage the.
That proline is way over priced. I dont think it’ll fetch over 30k unless its repowered with 4S
Why make videos of these boats if u dont get video of the whole boat???
Not sure I'm following
Everybody’s garbage is worth gold after the corona do people not remember what used boats used to go for
It’s easy to forget. I think most of these were reasonable save possibly that proline
