    I found a hack. You don't have to remove the wires while the starter is mounted. Just remove the 2 mounting bolts, side the starter out, and disconnect the wires when hanging down. There is enough slack to allow this.

    Hey all you wrenchers out there, I found out if you remove the oil filter on the 3.5 engine, you'll have plenty more room to get the positive wire connection off. This video saved me a labor fee. Did it myself! I am 70 years old, had a heart transplant 14 months ago. If I can do it, many other mechanically minded skilled patient guys can do it too. Swearing badly is acceptable.

    Everyone is right, this is the best tutorial on the web...I used this plus some of the other ideas offered here as well..I 1) only loosened a few splash guard clips and tied it back with a bungee cord, 2) removed the oil filter and caught any oil that dripped out, 3) disconnected the two starter wires from the oil filter area and dropped the starter from that area too and did not have to squeeze the starter out from under the radiator hose...there was plenty room...4) I reconnected the wires before reinstalling the mounting bolts...it did not hang down by the wires...the starter was supported by placing it on the frame area., it did not fall down...those are the only techniques I did different but could not have done it without your video and comments from others...thanks yooz!!

    I have to replace my battery cables and wanted to see how hard it was to get to the starter connection. This video was by far probably the best tutorial I have watched (and I have watched a lot). Some things that I love (don't worry, you did it, this is just so you can keep this in mind on future videos)
    1) Camera was steady and in focus the whole time
    2) Sockets needed and the size
    3) again, the camera was completely focused so I was able to see which way to turn the screws (I know, righty tighty, lefty loosey, but when I go under the car it gets confusing)
    4) The tab - you made sure to show how to take it off, after you already took it off, since it was impossible to see, that was awesome)
    basically, all the little details make it easy to follow. You have a new subscriber and you are at the top of my list when searching for tutorials.
    Thank you!

    Great detailed video. The part i didn't wanna do was remove the whole splash guard so hopefully just by removing the three bolts i can get to the starter easily.

      I loosened that splash guard and pulled it up and out of the way with a bungee cord in one of the clip holes and pulled it up and hooked it onto the engine area...

    amazing video!! hardest parts were tightening the 13mm nut on the neg/positive terminal, so many wires in the way and i didn't have socket for mini wrench, finally got it -- also removing the starter below the coolant hose did scrape the hose a bit OVERALL not too bad job

    I dropped my oil filter and backed the starter out then dropped it instead of pulling it through the front bumper area. Sooo much easier and doesn't damage the radiator hoses. Very little oil was in the filter when I dropped it.

    I do have a question...and it's been in the back of my mind for the last 25 years. It is the reason I NEVER replaced a starter. Do you need to shim/check to gap between the starter gears and the flywheel? This was something that was required on a mid 80's Pontiac. Or are the newer starters not requiring to gap them properly anymore. Your help would be greatly appreciated as I am finding myself possibly helping a family member replace a starter today.

    • @backyardchevy328
      @backyardchevy328  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, that is not a requirement anymore..older engines from 60s to 80s would use similar cast for engines and could also use the same starter but they werent exact and precise so to get them to work ud have to shim em to compensate for the subtle differences..now they got rid of that and certain starters will only fit certain years etc.
