When you are mature enough, as your body, mind and experience builds up, you look for logic and hence you seek for it, when you study different religions and opt for the best one because that is most logical and better in option than the other, that is what wise people do and Islam encourages that...and as child those beliefs are inscripted by people around you and since you don't have the conscience, you just gobble it up. So it is better to be a self-conscious muslim rather than a muslim who is just bought up in a muslim family and doesn't use is intelligence for reasoning

I have seen the most cowardly behavior among people in Muslims. This includes mostly conversations I’ve witnessed where Muslims deliberately misconstrue their doctrines for their own benefit. This specifically means to avoid having to take uncomfortable stances and also to have Islam questioned generally. It’s brave just to be honest in this case.

Depends in cases, people tend to forget many things about islam, their are about 72 sects with different beliefs around it, even the prophet himself said that only one sect would be the truth. So when people question islam depending on the question sometimes you will get many different answers as people are in diff sects it doesn’t affect match but depends on the question, and the culture of the person answering.

World Lover how so foolish of you to associate flesh and blood to God. Such things are characteristics of the creations NOT THE CREATOR. HE creates. Even the very notion of “creation” is a creation of God. He is free of all things you associate with him. A son? Tomorrow you’d come up with a wife father and daughters as well for God. So how very cheap of you. Show me one verse where Jesus himself said he is God or worship him? Of he died on cross and he was the God, who was looking after the universe at that time while he was dead before he arose? Its in the Bible that only a noble prophet cannot die on a cross. What are you trying to rank the holy prophet Jesus by saying died on a cross? No He was raised by God. Its only that you cannot perceive that raising up.

To everyone saying "you've betrayed your family", please shut up. The intrinsic and unspoken promise of a family is to co-exist and support and love each other. If a shift in ideology is enough to break that apart, then I doubt you had a proper family to begin with. To every one who's "come out", I'm both happy and proud of you for making your stand. I'm sure it wasn't easy. I hope you would continue to treat others with the understanding and courtesy that you were perhaps not subjected to but carried on nonetheless. We should only live true to our own unique ideologies, and lastly, I think everyone should be reminded that none of us are alone in our endeavours. Bit of a rant, but I wanted to get it out there.

Even if i believe there would be mass exodus it wouldn't change the narrow mindedness of people which is making them hostile to islam in first place. Like it won't change violence, patriarchy, rich poor imbalance, xenophobia, racism. Islam as a religion with its principels is against this and it shouldn't be blamed. Like the family member of the first girl stalking her and giving her death threats has nothing to do with islam. Islam has a protocol for hijab for men and women. There is no legal proceeding for it and the family member has no legal right in islam to give her death threat.

U know, I'm actually really questioning Islam rn (not a Muslim yet) the Quran says "and say the truth is from Allah so whoever wills let him believe and whoever wills let him disbelieve" surah Al kahf
Yet when I looked in the ahadiths there was a Hadith saying that anyone who leave Islam will and should be killed, so I'm in a real tight situation here, the main book in Islam is the Quran so when a Hadith directly contradict the Quran it shouldn't be considered as sahih (authentic) right? Yet most sunnis consider this Hadith as a sahih. If any Muslim saw this pls help meh

@Rain Death for apostasy does not exist in Islam. The problem is people have the Old Testament (Deuteronomy) idea and think Islam is the same. Look at Islamic history and you’ll see that nobody is punished for not believing anymore. There’s a punishment for when someone commits acts of treason against a state to the point where their actions cause significant harm to society. People confuse that with apostasy which is incorrect.

A close study of the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which serves as an example for all Muslims to learn how to practice Islam and carry out its injunctions, will show us that he never killed people who changed their religion or left Islam, for the reason of their leaving Islam.
In incidents when the Prophet commended the killing of some people, it was because they had committed an offense to the Muslim community, threatening its safety, or because they had killed someone and were killed themselves in retaliation. Therefore, killing them had nothing to do with their apostasy.
In fact, many Islamic scholars support the view that there is no prescribed punishment (hadd) for apostasy. In doing this, they use both reason and strong evidence from Qur’an and Sunnah.

As a reader of The Economist, I am glad that stories similar to these are being told to all audiences. As an American Muslim who practices, I appreciate the honesty of these women and how their stories do reveal tangible problems faith communities face when some members wish to leave those faith traditions. If religious communities understood, first, why members choose to leave, then they can understand how to better improve themselves and further progress. Perhaps we can get similar stories from individuals who have left different faiths in other countries outside of the U.K.?

Said lid, I understand that once your mind is deep set in something, that something will look flawless. As such, I'm not going to bring up my problems with religion or Islam in general, unless you later want me to do so.
I would like to, however, put to you two questions:
      1. Does it not worry you that the punishment for Apostasy puts you in the small list of religions/cults that is populated by names like Scientology and Jehova's witnesses? Does a strong, truthful idea need that kind of protection?
      2. Don't you think it is problematic that a person who has lost their faith in Islam cannot ask a scholar about it, fearing that if their arguments fail to convince them, they will be persecuted? Does this not mean that people who otherwise would have come into contact with them and had their issues resolved are now needlessly facing hellfire? (as your system dictates).
As someone genuinely open-minded and ready to follow whatever system seems most truthful, be that Communism, Fascism, Scientology, Islam or something else, I would really like to get an 'insider's perspective' on these concerns.
      Thank you in advance. :)

Thank you for the link. I read through the article in entirety and certainly will agree that the Islamic system of law has a degree of merit to it. While I do get a slight sense of "over a thousand years, people have gotten really good at praising the system", it still is a fundamentally workable, certainly in an Islamic context.
Perhaps my main grudge with it is the goal of "preserving religion", and I cannot help but be reminded of the Soviet justice system being geared to "preserve Communism", or the Fascist courts in Germany ensuring that the state ideology is followed.
The key question here is: why does the truth need to be protected by force?
You say it is not a protectionist religion, but I feel like that point is completely countered by the fact that self-preservation seems to be the 2nd most important priority of the justice system, considered more important than even reason.
I also find it odd that the apostasy laws apply not only to those who enter Islam and then leave it but also to those born into it who simply wish to cease being a Muslim. I can understand why a community would want to protect itself from an outside attack, but _surely_ those with pure intentions should be free to leave?
On the points about the sites provided, I thank you for the effort. Using good and widely accepted translations is something I have learned the hard way, and is indeed critically important if one wishes to gain a realistic understanding. I fully agree that it is unfortunate those bad translations are still around in such high numbers. Informing the people about their falsity is probably the best way to make sure they will be cast aside.
I come from a lineage of Christian theologians, though personally am an atheist (I have no interest in lying for a living, so politics and theology are not an option), some of whom were quite acclaimed. I have seen first hand the numerous cop outs a theologian or a scholar have at their disposal.
I am sure that if one goes to a fine enough scholar, he will be able to defeat any argument one may pose to them. It won't be a nice, clean, defeat, but certainly, the teeth can be hacked away from your argument. But one must be careful not to assume that this is proof of the perfection of Islam - for it is just as true for any other religion.
The job of a theologian is to make the matter so incomprehensible that eventually your logic tires out and you accept it by faith. I had a particularly persistent voice of reason in my head, and faith got tired, instead.
Indeed, when one looks at the religions of the world, you find they all are fundamentally the same: a memetic ideology trying to preserve itself. Religions and ideas grow and evolve much like we humans do, over time. They find an evolutionary niche and stick to it for as long as possible. This is the reason Christianity is evolving to be a less influential idea, hoping to be carried passively through the generations, to move from the realm of ideology into the realm of heritage. This is the reason Scientology is so specialised in taking in a relatively small number of people and exploiting them as efficiently as possible. This is the reason Islam dedicates itself to government-like functions, actively persecuting those who leave.
When we look at dead religions, like Finnish paganism, we find them weaker in this regard. The Finns never had a concept of a hell, which made them susceptible to the Missionaries threatening them with such horrors. What it did marvellously, however, was remain as a mythology that lives to this day.
I thank you for your friendly response and hope that I managed to be civil enough to at least weaken any negative perception you have of us atheists. While I, of course, see that you have been indoctrinated into a system of absurd and damaging beliefs, I also recognise that those beliefs blind you from seeing that - because they have to.
Have a great day, and may your God be favourable to you. :)

Asalamualykum. I advice you keep up your act until inshallah you re-return back to Islam. Please have faith. Whatever concerns or doubts or questions you have about Islam, keep asking them! Don't stop no matter what. If other Muslims tell you to shut up and just follow blindly, quote the following in the Quran:
      008:022
"Indeed, the vilest of living animals, in God's sight, are the deaf, the dumb and those that do not use their intellect"
      007:169 (Part)
"... Will you not use your intellect?"
      091:007-10
"And a soul and Him Who perfected / proportioned it. And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it. He is indeed successful who causes it to grow (purifies it), and he is indeed a failure who corrupts it (buries it)"
Allah doesn't want you to follow anything blindly, he insults those who avert from learning and use their reasoning. I know there are Muslims out there that make Islam hard to follow, but you don't have to follow them. What you need to follow is the Quran itself and Allah.
