Regardless of genetics you can always improve your arms. Yes, it may take longer and won't compare to the genetic elite. Just focus on being the best you.

Nicholas Luca Ricciardi That is a great post

Nicholas Luca Ricciardi I got pretty good genetics for arms. and at one point got stuck for some time on them growing. it was not till I only started doing chest and back alone (with out the isolation lifts for arms after the compounds) then on friday I would do a arm day. pick about 3 to 4 lifts for triceps and 3 to 4 for biceps do about 3 to 4 sets of each. and not all the time, but some times add in a drop set to just get a huge burning pump! this with a increase of 300 calories and my arms was growing for the first time in a LONG time! (: hope this can help someone.

Go tell that to Markus Ruhl who trained his triceps like his life depended on it, loaded with steroids and still never developed those muscles compared to his big ass biceps. Genetics is pretty much everything in bodybuilding and if Lee Priest says so, you better listen, shut up and take notes.

I don't think Lee is saying to give up on trying to make your arms grow, but not spend your time stressing about it and enjoy your life. Some people just don't have the genetics and that's why uses the examples with basketball and cricket. He loves both sports, but knows he doesn't have what it takes physically to excel in them.

NemeanLion Exactly. It's about being the best YOU can be. If you enjoy the gym, do it, just dont expect to be a pro.
Chances are this guy with no arms just needs to put some overall fucking weight on though. It's generally the issue with these sorts of questions - they want to know why their arms wont grow when they're 180lb wet. Put 20lb on and i'll bet your arms come up.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lee as a seventeen year old after prejudging in an Ironman show. He was my favorite bodybuilder at that time, in 2001, and in many respects still is. Dude is down to earth! I mean, at the time, I saw him as a bodyuilding god... and going back stage and meeting him with a couple friends after prejudging, he was just like meeting an old friend. Downright congenial! I mean he did not brush us off or anything. in a totally chill mood. It impresses me to this day that he took the time to meet my twin brother an I and our friend for a few minutes. Always number one in my book. Cheers Lee!

If you want to look better to people who don't lift - train and don't worry about genetics
If you want to look better to people who do lift - train and hope that you have god-tier genetics
I don't think everyone realizes that our perception of what is impressive is so distorted because we spend all day looking at absolutely massive guys with amazing genetics. The average person is impressed with someone who's only been training a few years

What I love about Lee is his common sense approach to bodybuilding. Train, rest, nutrition (no shortcuts). I see guys in the gym envious of anyone who is bigger, stronger, or younger then they are. No where else is this feeling of undeserved feeling of entitlement so prevalent as it is in bodybuilding. That is why bodybuilders die at 26 from taking 5 times their normal testosterone levels thinking it can overcome genetics.

Genetics play a role. But trust me there's usually a way to grow. For example my arms weren't growin for shit , so I read a book where Frank Zane said that he brought his arms up with extreme volume. I gave that a Shot and surely my arms started to grow.

So refreshing to hear the truth, so many people think its a training style that makes arms like Lee's; of course it isn't, it's genetics but people won't believe it, first they will blame gear.

      "Seeming smaller"
Sounds like bigorexia to me. That or you are burning fat off your body which makes your arms appear small thus less muscular especially if you are around 20% bf or more

  • @coachthorski
    @coachthorski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +50

I have a lot of respect for Lee Priest but this is the most demotivating answers I ever heard. If every person would adopt the "I don't have genetics" attitude we'd still be living in caves waiting for genetically gifted bonfire-lighter.
Did Einstein assumed he is a genetic dumbass because he dropped out of college? No, he kept busting his ass off, becoming father of modern physics and winning the Nobel Prize.
Did Ronie Coleman gave up after placing last in hist first Mr Olympia? Maybe he should consider not having the "top 3 genetics"? History shows different...
There is always a way to make progress even though it may take you more time and effort. You will never know if you've got what it takes until you try and keep on trying. Even then, there is so many paths you can take that it is impossible to say "I tried it all and I suck". Possibilities are endless!

    • @coachthorski
      @coachthorski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

***** First of all, you should consider how you address people - your last comment discredits you quite a lot. Secondly, there is a difference between being honest and having a point of view, which you communicate without a shred of constructivism.
It's easy to say that "research suggest" and "apparently he got tested". Show me the evidence. Even better, show me the research and tests suggesting that they guy who asked Lee a question cannot build bigger arms.
Apparently you're not genetically gifted to post insightful comments on TH-cam, why not consider cricket?

DL Bodybuilding - Training, Nutrition, Motivation sorry but Lee speak the truth..he said that if you love then train but if you dont have genetic u will not have muscles like other genetic guy..truth hurts but thats the way it is..yes you can look extra good but you cant expect to grow like genetic once.greetings

    • @coachthorski
      @coachthorski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Ante Jelaš That's 100% spot on, I'm not disputing that. Like I said, for some people looking "good" will take extra time and effort. My argument is that you can always improve and find a way around your limitations. Is "blame the genetics" mentality a champion's mind-set? What's the point of giving training/nutrition advice if your answer will be "your genetics suck"? As an icon in the industry you should encourage people to challenge their limitations rather than put them down to avoid disappointments.
Can you imagine teachers telling their semi bright students that they shouldn't bother with studying because they'll achieve jack?

I think it's important to specify what people mean by "my arms will not grow". Is their definition of good-looking arms 16-18"+ arms? If so they need a reality check, that is an extreme physique and 99% of people will never look like that.
I do the olympic lifts. It would be like me saying "my snatch sucks" because I can't snatch 200kg+ like Klokov, whereas a 100kg snatch is respectable, within reach for me and still more than what 99% of average people can do.
    Train for fun!

Yaiden050 Yep Marc has quite small arms compared to the rest of his body. I started out with similar proportions.
A few years ago I started training biceps for an hour, then triceps for an hour on separate days. I don't train arms with other bodyparts.
My arms measure 18in cold but flexed. They are almost 19.5in pumped, flexed by my side. Chest is still massive at over 52in. NO drugs!
I guess that's what Lee means by "shit build", lol...compared to his pythons...he's right! lol. Cheers.

More than genetic, i think the major problem of people is bad training. Whatever gym im going to, i swear that at least 90% of guys there have horrible form, just try to pile up weights and have no long-term strategy. They usually have no idea which precise muscle they're training anyway...

we all have diffrent genatics i think this a very fair advice for anybody in the buisness. most cases you will get bigger and stronger when after a while. but having a body like lee has for exsample doesnt only take alot of effort you need to have all the factors to grow in balans. if not you probly can still get big but you wont look like this guy ever even if you train just as hard as h does

  • @jacobforrester9827

Sometimes it's type of training. Strength doesn't necessarily mean size. Some can powerlift competitively and look like the average person. But, if it isn't a genetic problem, perhaps dropping to medium weight and going to extreme in volume. The game of hypertrophy is pushing blood into the muscle and stretching the muscle fascia. You of course need to do enough damage for some hyperplasia too. Hypertrophy is pushing muscle cell size through blood flow "the pump" and hyperplasia is causing stem cells to make new muscle to patch damage. It does take time too. Especially without gear. But even with gear it can take a couple years of serious training, nutrition, and rest. If after all that, and you don't see size, then it is lack of genetics for size. And you'll have to be content with being strong and not so big.

I know the question didn't include what exactly he does in his routine but I would have included the suggestion that he include squats and deads in his routine if he isn't already doing it. Those two exercises will have an overall better effect on your arms probably more then just doing arms by themselves with out deads and squats. Or in another words don't skip leg and back day. I work out arms 5 days a week and I don't know why they aren't growing lol..

Not really, I have pretty good arms, 19'' without gear so far 'cold' and still feel like they're growing as good as ever. However i don't have perfect legs at all. Yet my buddy who pretty much trains the same way as me has really good legs, which develop a lot faster then mine, and can't get his arms anywhere close to mine. Both of us tried different ways to get these muscle groups to grow. However because of genetics one simply has a harder time getting these muscle groups to grow. And because of that, the max growth of that muscle group is also limited to genetics. Doesn't mean you can't get these muscle groups look good. However the limits and the way these muscles develop are pretty much pre-set by your genetics.
Genetics do play a huge role. Even a bigger role for natty's as there is no gear to push harder to force muscle groups into development with more testosterone.

Yeah IMO if most people wanted to compete in the "Pro Ring" I don't think they'd do as well if they didn't have the genetics for it. I don't really mind looking the best I can in the gym.

  • @sonortubelug3853

Bollocks answer. Put on more mass, squat and deadlift. Eat a lot. Work on increasing your strength and your arms will grow in relation to the rest of your body. Unless you're on gear, then you can do whatever the fuck you like and you can curl away the hours.

Well, the thing with Lee is, he has very short compact arms. Its easy to fill them out. If you got long arms, it’s a lot harder.

Excellent video and the most honest by far. So man people who have accomplished so little are propping themselves up as a new guru with a novel approach that will help ALL people achieve a killer physique..yet its all a lie. Either you have the genetics to grow or you don't. The sooner you realize this the sooner you can put your focus on an area that you have great potential in. Most people cannot become a pro bodybuilder, most cannot become president/prime minister of a nation, most cannot become the next Martin Luther King Jr or Che, most cannot become physician or ground breaking scientist.. and it misleading to tell people that they can if they do not display the qualities needed to achieve excellence in those particular fields.

It's all genetics, I graduated hs with 13in arms, they are barely over 15 now. I have friends that have 18in arms some fat they don't even lift weights lol! My calves are as big as my arms and I barely work then. I should of been a boxer or bicyclist.....

The only thing he left out as far as good training and diet is actually prioritzing your arms. You might have to sacrifice having as good of sets for chest and back if you want your arms to grow. One dedicated arm day and finishing off your workouts with them isnt going to cut it. Putting them last will hold them back, simple as that

  • @karll3982

Lee based his answer on the assumption the guy was lifting properly. With that, I agree. The reality is, the guy probably does nothing but curls and skips triceps like most newbies.

I have a question about arm training.
what is your advice on arm training if you dont have shit genetics? I know Lee always did high volume training when it came to arms, but does he go heavy or light and does he use dropsets and super sets and such?
Just so some of us who dont have totally shit genetics can get some answers! Thanks.

Evan Delisle He does a bit of everything. His answer would be he does exactly what everyone else does. Lee just trains hard. Some days heavy, others light with heaps of reps.

I'm pretty strong for my weight, I can squat and deadlift more than the guys twice my size in my gym, but I have barely any muscle mass. I'm just strong and I can keep adding plates every month, but even as I grow stronger and I dont really grow any bigger at all. For a long time I tried to build mass with all kinds of programs and no progress. Eventually I just got real with myself, I'm naturally strong, not big and I began to train exclusively for strength. I can do Heavy Bench, squat and deadlift x5 week with no problems with recovery and can do whole week at 90% - 95% range without burning up. But size? No way, nothing works. also doing high rep ranges do nothing for me, nada. I do x3 sets of 15 reps bench presses to failure and nothing, next day Im ready to go again, but no size gains, I just get better at doing more and more reps

Lee ya made it rough man. Gotta disagree with you, someone wants bigger arms but doesnt have the genetics? you can do it with the proper mind set, methodology and hard work in the right ways. sure it might kill you mentally and physically, but i believe in that and im sure everyone else does too!

I'm a fan of Lee, but he didn't explain this very well.
First, genetics determine HOW BIG your arms can get, not IF they can grow (of course they can). The role of genetics is a fundamental one, but that doesn't mean that 97% of us have shit genetics and can't build great looking bodies.
Second, we have to define what "big" arms means. Bicep measurement is only part of it. A ripped guy with 16" biceps will appear to have "bigger" (i.e. more muscular) arms that a fat guy with 18" biceps. So if by "big" we mean 16"-18" biceps with low bodyfat, then yes, almost ANY healthy man can attain that. If by "big" we mean 21" biceps with low bodyfat, then NO, most men will NEVER attain that, even with steroids.
Third, focusing solely on the arms is a mistake. The goal is to build up the muscles of the ENTIRE BODY, which are essentially one unified organ. Larger arms will come naturally as a part of this process. The best way to get big arms isn't by doing 1000's of bicep curls. It's by doing squats, bench press, push-ups, pull-ups, and other compound movements.
Fourth, when you look at Lee, you're seeing a man who has been bodybuilding essentially non-stop since he was a child (look at him age 13). He is not a computer programmer who lifts weights on the side. We're talking DECADES of 100% dedication. How much of his size is due to genetics, and how much is the result of him focusing his entire LIFE on this endeavor? We can't really answer that, because he doesn't have an identical twin who ISN'T a bodybuilder.

+Michael Economides Well I think "genetically good arms" are about insertions. Long biceps and triceps insertions will look great. The opposite looks like shite.

Don't listen to anyone else when it comes down to building muscle, especially steroid users. Look within yourself and get in tune with your own body. Everyone is unique, and you need to experiment with what will work for you. Remember also some folks have better abilities toward building muscle and having good shape to it. Please don't stress yourself out trying to figure out what works. Key again is listen to your body. Also without correct nutrition, suplimentation, and rest forget about it. Look at it this way, go talked with a world class sprinter and do what he says. If you aren't a fast runner the advise is worthless. The same goes for developing a competitive physique. You either have it or you don't and you need to try and build a foundation first to see what results you get.
