Hi Dave! I haven’t done much freight car maintenance other than swapping wheel sets or replacing brake equipment. Never knew the significance of those buttons. Now I know! Makes sense. It’s very similar to the bearing shimming requirements for locomotive axles. If the axle and wheels don’t track straight, the truck can wander side to side. If it’s bad enough, that can cause a derailment.
You are right about that Bill, and good to see you again, been awhile since I've heard from you. Always is a pleasure to read your comments. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Glad you learned something new today and had a good day Boots n all. I still learn new things about railroading all the time too. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Glad you learned something new Brian. Gonna have a series of videos coming out explaining the entire truck suspension system, hope you will be able to get notified when they come out, sometime in January/Feb. Appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hello Dave!! I figured I'd add to freddy the kitty. I dug a baby kitten out of a combine throat a few years back. After a couple days he calmed down and my mom fell in love with him, me too. I just had to say goodbye to combine kitty, some folks will never know the love a pet shows you. I miss lil buddy, but I couldn't handle him suffering. Hopefully freddy is around for you many years to come. Love the train content, and everything in between.
Hello Brian! Very Sorry for your Loss. People Say they’re Like a Member of the Family and I Stop and Correct them. NO, they are a Full Fledged Member of our Family. 👍 GOD Bless Combine Kitty and your Family. 🙏❤️
Thank you for the nice comment Brian and your right, it is so hard to let go of a pet, they are family to us. But of course Freddy doesn't view us a family, he sees us as his servants. :-) Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
Dave, It is exactly this kind of detailed design and engineering information that I find so interesting on your channel. Please keep these kinds of videos coming.
Thank you for the very nice comment Tron and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave glad to see the video and thank your bosses at IronSenergy for allowing you to film at work and giving us the videos that are awesome and informative and entertaining
Thank you for the nice comment Steven and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
18:04 clears up the question of 5 or 6 buttons. The right 5 buttons give the length discrepancy, but the leftmost button indicates that the sideframe has been gauged. If the left button is still there, the frame hasn't been measured, and can't be used until it has been measured. Very clever! Looks like a good book!
You are right Steam Crane, if button 6 is still on the frame cannot be used under AAR rules. Book is the most definitive book on railroading I've ever read. Get yourself a copy as a Christmas gift to yourself. Now go get it. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
So basically, it's like alignment on a vehicle. Your allowed +/- on your alignment points. Never ever even thought about the trucks being aligned that way. Cool stuff! Thanks and Happy thanksgiving.
You are correct in saying that Shakes 73. Thank you for the very nice comment and glad you enjoyed the home movie. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
That is another bit of railroading an average person wouldn't even think of. Thank you Dave, that was interesting, I can see where having the technical information is very important .
Thank you for the nice comment Raymond and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
When I worked on class 8 trucks, we had to make the same adjustments, either shim the spring ends, or adjust the radius rods. Normal alignment, except yours are not adjustable without a lot of work. When I worked on ships, things like propellor shafting was a little more precise, as it also had to include all of the gearing, if any, and the crankshaft or turbine shaft. Have fun
Thank you for the informative comment A Diamond Forever. Yes shafts must be perfectly balanced you are right about that. I am familiar with steam turbines for power plants and they must be precisely balanced. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
Thank you for the nice comment Bobarue and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
On our trucks (light rail passenger) we measure tram at overhaul from the center points of the axle and compensate for difference by shimming the primary suspension Chevron springs if needed. We are also fortunate to have our own in floor wheel truing machine so we can profile our tires when needed
Thank yo for sharing that with us Beyond Middle Aged Man. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
I always like to see the jacks you use to change trucks. I remember back in the 70s when an area railroad parked a train of rail grain cars on a rural siding that was going to a defunct grain elevator and left them for a few weeks. When they came to retrieve them the cars that still were on brass wheel bearings had no bearings and all of the brass king post bearings were gone. Enterprising thieves as I am sure then had nothing but some 20-ton bottle jacks. Needless to say, those cars stayed there a lot longer. My customer told me the big crews worked for a couple of weeks getting them removed.
Wow brass brings good money at the scrap yards here Big Un, so hard to find any. Fortunately we have very little problem with thieves although a couple of months they took the walk way plates off Bridge 3, no minor task to do that. First ever here. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
I think I need a button for my shirt that says "Certified Bogie Button Graduate". Thanks Dave! And thanks Mr. Wolf and Freddy for your contributions. :)
Hey that sounds like a good idea to get them made up and send to all my subs for Christmas Bassotronics! Freddy loves to get in these movies too. You will get the chance to meet Mr. Wolf at some point this winter, he is coming to visit me Dec 09. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
As a 51+ year railroader that has been retired for 7 years - you learn something new all the time. In all those years I had never challenged that truck side frames would be other than 'perfect'.
Thank you for the nice comment mmi16 and glad you found it interesting. I still learn new things about railroading also my friend. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
Thanks for bringing back some memories Dave! Many years ago, I did a lot of work on a P/A telephone system at CNR Transcona Shops, here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Our main equipment room was right next to the truck rebuild area of Car Shop. As a result, we got friendly with the guys in that area. Over several years, they explained pretty much everything you would ever want to know about trucks. Including pairing buttons 🙂 I couldn’t remember the measurement when I saw the title of the video, but I remember now. Thanks again!
Your welcome and glad it brought back good memories for you Slide100. That had to be pretty cool talking to those guys in the shop, I would have loved doing that. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
Never knew that. Going to have to ask the car repair guys tomorrow if they know what they are. After 20 years, Dave still showing me stuff i never knew 👍
Thank you for the nice comment Michael, glad you found out something new. Let me know what those guys say. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave, i always enjoy these behind the scenes information regarding how trains work. This was an aspect of railroading that I never would have thought about until you presented it here. Keep up the great work and the interesting info!
Thank you for the nice comment Michael and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day.
Freddy is in charge of the entire house Mike.... this whole place here revolves around him, or at least he thinks so. Ggad you found the video interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
Thanks Dave; You are a wealth of information and after that explanation on buttons, I believe that a miss match set of buttons can also cause excessive rail wear as well. 3/32 may not sound like much but wear points can cost money in the long run especially for a large freight railroad. Even your short line with so much traffic going back and forth and being maxed out 1/2 the time. Keep up the good work and your love for the railroad industry always shows through. I hope your wife does not get jealous!!! 73’s DE N2JYG
Thank you for the very nice comment Franklin and glad you found it interesting. Your right, if it will wear the wheels it will wear on the rail head also. And the wife is very understanding, she is a gem. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the very nice comment Scott and glad you enjoyed the home movies. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the very nice comment Robert and your welcome, my pleasure. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching our video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the very nice comment Dave. I try to keep positive outlook. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching our video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment Factory Dad. I am very lucky to have such a good job around trains. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

Thank you for the very nice comment John and glad you are enjoying the home movies. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
As (the "Great One") Ralph Kramden once reminded his pal Ed Norton of, "It's the details that count!" Your video, Dave, could not have echoed that point better. For us train watchers out here, it makes a big difference, my friend. And...I just love your fluffy friend Freddie...made my day!! Thank you, thank you...🤗👌👍
Thank you for the very nice comment Steve and glad you enjoyed the home movie. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Aw, Freddie❤❤! And wow, super cool info! I had no idea this was a thing, so now I'll be looking very closely at the trucks now....and it makes total sense. My inner engineer is smiling right now😁
Thank you for the very nice comment Jennifer and glad you enjoyed the home movie. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
I watch your videos, and right away I have to get outside and watch the trains! We have Roscoe the kitty here, Dave, he's 13 yrs young today. Your always very interesting and thorough explanatory videos are appreciated, thank you!
Wow cool, Freddy says Meow to his new friend Roscoe. Thank you for the very kind words Joseph and glad you are enjoying the home movies. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for sharing that info Eric and kudos to you for all your hard work. Being a car man has to be one of the toughest jobs on the RR in my opinion, at least from what i've seen here with the hopper cars. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Well, now you've gone and done it, Dave...now I'm going to have to go through my entire HO-scale inventory of cars and make sure that all of their truck sideframes are paired correctly. 😁 Seriously though, that was entirely all new information to me. I had not ever heard of pairing buttons before. Now I will for sure be looking for them when I'm out trackside again. I don't know when the practice fell out of favor, but I have seen many, mostly older cars, that have the train car's number cast into the sideframes. My guess is that when pairing buttons came into use, casting car numbers went away, because it wasn't a guarantee that the four sideframes for that particular car would "pair" up during the casting process. Of course now, we know it is common to paint a car's number on the sideframes, but that is after the sideframes have been paired up. Good stuff, Dave! Now I need to get a magnifier to see those HO-scale buttons. 🤠👍
Magnifying glass is in the mail as my Christmas present to you Scotty. Someone told me they actually make wheel flange gauges for HO trucks too? The small amount of HO cars I have don't have the buttons or markings on the trucks, no surprise there. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching our video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the nice comment William and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

Dave: This is a GREAT video. I really enjoyed watching it, as my wife prepared our Thanksgiving Day dinner. Thanks for making this informational video.
Thank you for the nice comment JR and glad you found it interesting. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day.
Thank you for the very nice comment Scott and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Now your a big kid watching trains go by Arthur, but the loco crews don't seem to be as friendly now as they were back then. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hi, Dave, Freddie looks great! I was worried about his eye, and am glad to see that he has healed. I never heard of alignment nubs, but the concept makes perfect sense. I wonder how they keep passenger trucks aligned. My dad and I visited the Lehigh Valley Railroad with the cub scouts sixty years ago. Neither of us had ever seen such big machines before or since. Amazing.
One of the cars from my original Lionel set back in the early 1960's is a Lehigh Valley car, pretty cool isn't it. Freddy is much better and he says thank you for your concern Eric. Passenger trucks are cast in one piece is how they are in alignment. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day. Meow...
Good info. I never knew about pairing buttons or thought about that. I would have guessed a shim might be used to provide the alignment. Next time I'm up close to a railcar I'll have to look for the buttons.
I don't think I have ever commented on one of your video's yet but I must say it was very informative. Just for your information the lines that were showing up on your computer screen when recorded are because the refresh rate of your monitor is not matched to the refresh rate of your camera. There is nothing you can do about it. There are cameras out there that are built to match but they carry a larger price with them. Despite the lines on the computer screen in the video it was very readable. Once again another really good video that I enjoyed watching. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you for the very nice comment Bill and for explaining that, those wavy lines drive me nuts and now I know what causes them! Freddy and I really appreciate your watching our video and may you have a very good day my friend.
How nice of you to say that ferstuck and your welcome. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend. Will try to do that Lewie.... :-) Amish have lots of buttons too.... LOL Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Extremely informative video Dave. I had no idea, but after the video can see how important this is. Saw a video a couple of years ago where a car truck set was wobbling all over the place. Now I bet I know why. Thanks again Dave. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you for the nice comment Thomas and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

What the truck, i never thought of those rusty, crude looking units as precision anything. I suppose making them adjustable would be an engineering nightmare and or very expensive. Thanks for sharing your passion. 👍
I would rather imagine you are right Randy, what a feat that would be, which is why they don't do it. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
@ccrx6700 We appreciate you and Freddy for devoting your time to take our minds into a different place, void of political divisiveness. I kinda like that divisiveness actually 😂🤣😂🤣😂 .....but not 24/7. It has no control over me at all, I just enjoy trying to understand how people come up with their strong political views.... Both sides have the crazy extremists. They're kinda fun 👹 What you provide, is totally different, .....is like watching the drain and culvert cleaner outer guy, Post 10. From the moment we click on either of your channels it's a guaranteed stress free time. Rusty metal, rotted wood, whistle's, rocks water and sticks..... The cool stuff that men really care about. 😁 It's educational stuff too, like physics and math. I love that you love what you do.... a true "pinch me" kind of job. 👍
Thank you for the nice comment Jarrett and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.

Great video Dave, I have learned so much about trains from your videos. Other channel is excellent also. Cat adds 1000% to this video. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Thank you for the nice comment Troy and glad you are enjoying both channels. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hi Dave, it took me to the nine minute mark to understand this, and without your lead up, I wouldn't have got it. I thought it had something to do with the skew of the axle. I ran rotary printing equipment and I see how a mismatch can cause big problems. I love to learn new things, and have been fascinated by trains all my 65 year old life. I have two cats myself. Freddy looks happy.
Thank you for the very nice comment Bolha. I can certainly imagine with printing the alignment must be perfect all the time. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend. Freddy is always happy, well almost always.... :-)
Thank you for the very nice comment Kamala and glad you are enjoying the home movies. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching our video and may you have a very good day my friend.
r/todayilearned Thank you for the lesson. I've been a railfan for decades and I never knew about this. I love your enthusiasm for your job and that you don't talk down to anyone. Give Freddy some headpats for me.
Thank you for the nice comment tiladex and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day. Freddy is reading and purring.....Meow
The coal mine is hiring PJ, you will have to start out under ground tho, pay is good work is steady benefits are pretty good. Go to the iron Senergy web site for more details and how to apply. One thing you will most likely never work on the RR here, it goes by seniority and there will be over 600 guys in front of you. Freddy and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day.
Thanks i love your videos and your laugh and now while im sitting waiting on the train to pass look at the springs to see if the car is loaded or not. Now i get yo look for buttons
Dave - Thank you so much for this fascinating and highly informative video. Despite the importance of proper tracking I never gave the matter any thought and am quite impressed with the simplicity and effectiveness of the six-button system. I wonder how and when it came about. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thanks to Freddie as well. Ted
Your quite welcome Ted and glad you found it interesting. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend. Freddy really helped out editing this one too.
Thank you and glad you found it interesting Andy. Freddie and I really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 amazing. the energy you have is beyond amazement my friend. it would be good one day if you could come and visit the british railways. we have a fantastic railway museum. steeped in history. do you get many steam trains round your way?
Thank you for the nice comment Camp Sawyer and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
Great video Dave, with great information. Being a design engineer myself, I often wondered what the tolerance was on wheel set spacing. To me, everything you mentioned makes perfect sense. It’s good to see that the trucks that you have in stock, are matched to near perfection. Thank You for this very informative video. Have a great day.

A very interesting video Dave, I had know idea about those pairing details. There's always something new to learn! We certainly use similar bogies (sorry, trucks) down under, so I will ask around and see if I can find out how the side frames are paired. Keep those trucks rolling Dave 🙂
Thank you for the nice comment Richard and glad you found it interesting. please let me know what you find out. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day.
how. bout that dave. your very smart and well informative. i never new about the buttons i wooda just thought it was a casting slag. but thats railroading 4 ya

Hey Dave ! We used a halo ring of fire to heat the wheels to get them off and also to put them on . Just get them off the ground enough to do it . We had to pull the traction motors off and a great time for wheel replacement .
Awesome Robert, I've seen videos of them putting the tires on steam loco wheels with that ring, pretty neat trick. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Very cool. So the buttons basically verify a true alignment of the wheel sets on the truck so that they track perfectly straight. Thanks for sharing that with us, Dave! And should out to Gary Wolf as well! Freddy the TH-cam star has more subs than I do! lol.
Your right Shane and glad you found it interesting. Freddy is a big you tube star and his goal is to surpass Mr. Beast in views, no doubt that will happen soon too..... :-) Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.

@Bassotronics 😊👍
Including pairing buttons 🙂
I couldn’t remember the measurement when I saw the title of the video, but I remember now. Thanks again!
Your welcome and glad it brought back good memories for you

The joy that springs from you is contagious! Thank you for all the videos that you post! :D

Never knew that. Going to have to ask the car repair guys tomorrow if they know what they are. After 20 years, Dave still showing me stuff i never knew 👍
Thank you for the nice comment Michael, glad you found out
something new.

Freddie is charge of the office and tells the dogs what to do. Interesting video on truck sets are matched and the rules for mismatch sets.
Freddy is in charge of the entire house Mike.... this whole place
here revolves around him, or at least he thinks so. Ggad you found the video interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
Thanks Dave;
You are a wealth of information and after that explanation on buttons, I believe that a miss match set of buttons can also cause excessive rail wear as well.

Aw, Freddie❤❤!
And wow, super cool info! I had no idea this was a thing, so now I'll be looking very closely at the trucks now....and it makes total sense. My inner engineer is smiling right now😁

Hi Dave... Passenger carman here, our trucks do not have pairing buttons because the sides are matched as one piece cast at the foundry...
Figured that would be the answer. Passenger cars don’t need them, because they’re balanced.
Thank you for sharing that info Eric and kudos to you for all
your hard work. Being a car man has to be one of the toughest jobs on the RR in my opinion, at least from what i've seen here with the hopper cars. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
I have never noticed any pairing buttons on our bogies over here in the UK, but I would have to ask in the carriage & waggon works.
Please do John and let me know what you find out. Freddy
and I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and
may you have a very good day.
@@ccrx6700 Dave it's a no for the Pairing Buttons over this end on British built bogies, as most of ours are riveted and welded together.
@PBRJOHN684 Thank you John 👍👍👍
@@ccrx6700 NO PROBLEM DAVE.

The small amount of HO cars I have don't have
the buttons or markings on the trucks, no surprise there. Freddy
and I really appreciate your watching our video and
may you have a very good day my friend.
Thanks for a vey informative video Dave. This is something a person would never think about.
Thank you for the nice comment William and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

Freddy is much
better and he says thank you for your concern Eric. Passenger
trucks are cast in one piece is how they are in alignment.
Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day. Meow...
Good info. I never knew about pairing buttons or thought about that. I would have guessed a shim might be used to provide the alignment. Next time I'm up close to a railcar I'll have to look for the buttons.
Thank you for the nice comment Bert and glad you found it interesting. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day.
Heya Dave. Great seeing you
You're amazing
Thank you for the nice comment Clark. Freddy and I really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for the very nice comment Bill and for explaining that,

Hi Dave, it took me to the nine minute mark to understand this, and without your lead up, I wouldn't have got it. I thought it had something to do with the skew of the axle. I ran rotary printing equipment and I see how a mismatch can cause big problems. I love to learn new things, and have been fascinated by trains all my 65 year old life. I have two cats myself.
