Re Railing a Derailed Hopper Car

  • A fluke caused this hopper car to derail and we are going to re rail it
in the video. The guys all worked together and we got this car re railed
in actually pretty good time. Took longer to get the re railers in place
than it did to actually re rail the car. The re railers we have are very
old and do not have a flange on the outer ramp. They are called a
straddle re railer or some call them a re railing frog. All new straddle type
re railers have a flange on the inside and outside of the re railer.
There are several different types of re railers and some day I will
do a video on the differences.
Silly cars are always causing trouble because they are tired of
being pushed and shoved around.... What a really cool show
Thomas the Tank Engine was, my son growing up loved that show.

I love trains but they kinda scare me sometimes. Something like a piece of wood can do such chaos. Especially train wheel flanges are just 1" in height. The Thomas The Tank Engine references made me giggle alot.
Those 30 year old rerailers have stood the test of time and they work great! Kudos to the engineer rockin' back N forth to get the wheel prepared. Awesome. :) That's railroadin'!

Yeah, it's amazing what shows up in the coal.

We used to have a box car full of oak boards of various sizes and wooden wedges. Literally a box car full, when it got low, they would send it out to a local mill that had rail service and they would fill it. Those rerailers can be a real pain sometimes, wood was easier. That was a Smooth Operator with that remote, nice job.

Never had to re-rail a car before but it seems like the final action has a very similar feel to removing a snapped bolt or aligning a multi-plate drum clutch. A whole lot of "careful, easy, almost, come on" when things could go back to square 1, or worse. Then the wheel rolls over the hump, the bolt breaks loose or the drum slides on and angels start applauding.

is there tools to be able to clean out the coal between the rails? or is it done by hand?

It's rare we get wood out of the mine, but every once in awhile
it happens Richard. They screen for metal but not wood. This was a
fluke, I don't ever remember it happening before. You are right, I
can rest a lot better now. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

I don't why but, I thought you were going to need two of those massive Caterpillar side lifting machines!
Instead you use a simple Iron Tool!

They are expensive to get, but a lot of fun to watch in action. Rule of
thumb is, if the wheel is still on the tie then usually we can re rail
it. If it's off the tie, then time to call in the big Cats. Really appreciate
your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good
      day my friend.
