Agreed! I don't have a lot of time to rail fan out like you do. We have CSX and a couple of short lines but that pretty cool. The city I live in is really a cross road we get freight coming from north, south and east and west. Most trains just pass straight through with only about 25% of the freight staying here Nice video , nice comment thanks for keeping it clean.

It’s nice to watch someone who doesn’t pretend to know it all. Still working on the railroad for the last 17 years in the great white north, on the ground as a conductor and in the “seat” for the last 13 years, it gets exhausting watching people talk about things they have no idea about, EVEN I DON’T know everything and I learned from a lot of old heads with 40 plus years even learning their tricks behind the throttle. When you think you know it all, that leads to either getting hurt or killed because STEEL has NO FEELINGS...NOW YOU, say that you don’t know but I am sure if you asked a conductor or engineer they would tell you the why’s of something being done if you were to ask...Stay safe and enjoy rail fanning

Evening Danny! A few weeks ago CSX ran a 16000' Q453 with mid DPU, and they've started running Q032 in a 1x1 format. That signal was doing something called "floating," a common practice on NS that CSX has started picking up lately. As far as the shuffling the reefers, most customers have specific spotting instructions, and want their cars in a certain order. If you have any questions feel free to ask! I'm a CO and I'll answer them as best as I can
(ps thanks for all the great videos! Always loved em as a railfan and still love em as a railroader :P )

He's definitely right about Florida being perfect for railfanning in the winter. And if you live anywhere close enough to the Auto Train station at the Virginia-DC line it makes your trip even nicer. It's a direct run to Florida with no stops except a very brief crew change halfway. You get to ride the rails there and back as they feed you and provide nice accommodations. Plus having your own car freighted down to Florida with you makes things nice when your driving back and forth spotting trains and such. It's really a great time of the year to visit Florida central or otherwise.

@6:10 my educated guess is, the customer wanted that car at a specified loading door, requiring the change. as to why they didn't shove it to spot may very well be because of the curvature in the track and the fact that in order to fit the cars in the track and get them to match up with the doors, they had to all be coupled. Coupeling long cars in a curve is difficult and if done wrong with a bypassed coupler can derail the car, so the adage is. never cut off in a curve. Locomotives, my area of expertise, are practically impossible to do in a curve. Not to mention, trying to m/u the things, I'm not the limber 24 year old I was when I became an engineer and couldn't get my self in between two snow plows in order to reach the cable and hoses 😂

CSX recently started using DPUs in the toledo area too, which was a very interesting suprise. Ive seen them all the time at places like horseshoe curve where its very hilly, but the toledo area is quite flat. The more I looked into it (and after watching your video) it makes much more sence that they started using them- especially considering that before they had been pulling trains out of flint as long as 14,000ft with only head end power.

In reference to DPU's, I happened to catch a grain train in Laurinburg NC a couple weeks ago that had 3 lead units and 3 mid train units. Quite a surprise as I've never seen that many mid train before. This grain train had to be 11,000ft. One of the longest I've seen.

I started seeing units at the end of most trains for the past couple of years. It seems it has become common practice(cost cutting?). I drive next to a very busy stretch of rail by HWY 90 in Sugar Land, TX.

This is very common in Canada. Not just because of the large grades, but because of the train lengths. CN runs a fair amount of trains in southern Ontario. Better of 20-40 a day and each one is massive. Usually having 2-3 up front and 1-2 DPU's. Been like this for many years up this way

As far as that Signal goes, The dispatcher had probably already lined up the next movement going the opposite direction at the next control point. This is called “stacking in” a signal, and the next train is lined up as soon as the first clears. The approach lit intermediate signal displayed the aspect reflecting the next signal until the train had cleared the block.

The extra switching moves of the loads could be for several reasons: #1: Sometimes a customer will request certain cars at specific doors at their facility. #2 the actual car length and/or height can also play role in the switching of rail cars into different positions so they fit properly at the dock area doors. If you look at the string of reefers the ARMN cars are shorter than the BNSF cars. We actually have a Potato customer on our line that gets ARMN and BNSF cars and they do have to be spotted differently due to length and height.

My coworker who is a signal maintainer said that the DPU on the back is acting as an EOT and since it sends the air pressure and other data via PTC, the whole PTC ATCS system registered that DPU as a locomotive going the opposite direction which is why the signal gave the aspect of approach limited

2:34 Just a guess here but, I suspect the reason that the signal displayed the Approach Limited indication was account a new northbound routing that may have been stacked ahead of Q441's southward indication. Being approach lit, the signal displayed stop while 441 was in the track circuits both north and south of the signal but once the bottom end exited the circuit protected by the northward signal, it cleared-up, allowing for the appropriate signal for the northbound train. Then as Q441 got farther south and out of the "approach" circuit the signal went back to being dark.
