  • "Its first appearance on 5/15/77 in St. Louis was a low-key affair, and it would make rare appearances in 1977-1978, usually later in the second sets. When it came back in the 1980s, it was much peppier, and would often open shows, giving the concert ahead a party vibe from its first notes." - David Lemieux

      The 89 and early 90 tours were a revitalization of the band, Jerry seemed like he was having a blast riffing with Brent. I think the death of Brent caused the downfall of Jerry and it affected the band. Looking at the video, you've got 2 people on keys that don't even come close to Brent, and no one really looks like they want to be there. they're just going through the motions.

    I was also at these three shows, and while this night (5/11/1991) was overall rather lackluster, the night before (Friday May 10th 1991) was one of the most inspired evenings of music the Grateful Dead played in the entirety of the 1990's, with Jerry Garcia giving us a brilliant, flawless performance that had 30,000 people on our feet in appreciation from the opening notes.
    I would love to see the video from that show....

      @@runme69 The entire 1st Set from 5/12/91 was money in the bank. "CC Rider" into what I think(?) was the Grateful Dead's first ever version of Bob Dylan's "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" was so cool to be there for, and I recall an especially poignant "High Time" as well...

      Brent was at his peak when we lost him too. Vince without Bruce sounded like a whining hack on a Casio (no offence, lol). They should have waited a year & hired my cousin Robert Walter. He can't sing but they coulda gone a jazzier/NOLA/route with more horn sit-ins. There were plenty of better choices. I think he was burnt out, knew he was close to the end & the Hornsby year & a half was his way of giving us a couple more years of fun. Imagine what 'Nee Speedway' would have been w/ Brent!???
      By 1993 I was focused on seeing as many JGB shows as possy. The Warfield was only a four hour drive from Arcata (Humboldt). I loved being on the GA floor of the Warfield sooooooooooooooo much. '92 & '93 were dynamite, dynamic shows. I loved it when he busted out "Johnny Too Bad". I was lucky enough to catch the Reno one. I loved his covers like "Twilight"(Robbie Robertson), "The Maker" (Daniel Lanois), "He Ain't Give You None" (Van), "See What Love Can Do" (Eel River was ridiculously good! Best "Lay Down Sally" ever. "Way You Do" was also the best version Eva!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, Brent was indeed the best. I forgot what I was supposed to be Talkin' Bout (great Grant Green Blue Note btw, lol).

  • @numbernine2207
    @numbernine2207 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm desperate for 5-12-91 to be put up. Easily the best show of the 3 nights in May. "Althea" with those loud Weird chords. The breakout of "C.C. Rider" > "Train To Cry", "El Paso", epic "B.T. Wind", sick "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's", "L.L. Rain">"Terrapin"Drumspace>"G.D.T.R.F.B", etc.

    • @jpwjr1199
      @jpwjr1199 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What loud weird chords are you referring to? Althea's progression is pretty standard (Bm7, AMaj7, E7, AMaj7 or v, IV, I7)) and I'm listening to a board of the show and hear nothing unusual in the way of substitutions. Are you sure you understand what you're listening to? I was half hoping Bruce was going to play a Bb7 or D dim over the tonic or something, but alas.

    • @numbernine2207
      @numbernine2207 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jpwjr1199 Check out their 1st show @ Oakland (12-15-86, love that first set!) after coma or Sandstone '91, was probably the coolest, non Brent I heard Bob play Althea. It's more the volume & the pedal than the chord progression. "Weird" was a poor adjective. Psychedelic would have been more appropriate.

    I'm only here to hate on this song. I have no idea why they played it all the time. It's corny. It's hokey. The lyrics are nonsense. I thought I dove pretty deep into the pool of psychedelics, but I guess not deep enough for this one! Buzzkilllllll.

    • @Justdon-s2s
      @Justdon-s2s 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey Now…Hey Now…so danceable with that slinky Mardi Gras New Orleans beat always made the place light up and move. By the way, the lyrics are not nonsense…it is Mobilian Jargon, which is an extinct Native American trade language derived from mostly Choctaw and Chickasaw. There is some creole in there too. And if you really don’t like this song that’s all well and good, however, why come on here and rain on peoples parades …especially the Mardi Gras parade

    • @Justdon-s2s
      @Justdon-s2s 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Psychedelics require a creative mind in which to play. Otherwise, they are just drugs.

      LOL, it's okay to hate on some songs. I believe Jerry enjoyed the dance hall aspect of this song. It really got the crowd bouncing. My favorite version is the one in New Orleans with the Bangles. This particular version is "meh".
