"Played a shade over 300 times, Terrapin Station was a very welcome addition to Grateful Dead second sets (with a couple of exceptions) whenever it was played. This majestic show, released on CD and DVD in 2005, features a typically hot late-1980s version." - David Lemieux
Grew up within earshot of Rich Stadium, went to the 86 show. Always wondered how the Buffalo shows were regarded by true Deadheads. It was a multi day happening back then.
I drove from NH to Buffalo for this show. Two days later i was working at my retail job and some guy hands me a dollar bill with the setlist of this show written in pen on the dollar bill.
What a period of Renaissance for the dead, the rhythm devils were energetic and animated, Bobby, Brent and Jerry are on top of their games! Phil’s playing is subtle yet rich and masterful... inspiration move me brightly
I cut my 2nd husband loose cuz he didn't want to go to this show with me. I went by myself and gave the extra ticket to a kind stranger, HE WHO BECAME HUBBY #3! Less than 7 months later, (as soon as #2 was legally gone!) we married barefoot on the beach at Malibu! Talk about Inspiration moving someone brightly! Ours is still a great life together and I'll always be Grateful!
Best Terrapin IMHO. I was there that night and we had high expectations after Sullivan Stadium on the 2nd......we were NOT disappointed. This show was the highlight of that summer.
Not just a song, a timeless medieval epic. This, and "The Other One" and "Dark Star:, are the ones that always transported me to another plane. Don't get me wrong, lots of other great tunes, but this is one is different.
Terrapin Station sums up the appeal of the Dead . Was never about individuals, always the collaboration and truly selfless musical harmonies, I don’t think we can duplicate this today
I'm gonna be listening to the Dead tonight in a way that right after midnight the first notes of Terrapin Station will welcome me into 2021 the proper way.
Bob, had the idea,we needed Brent,he is a Texan ! They like to fight! Tough guy! He only smiled when it slipped out! He pushes hard ! Made the new energy…. Garcia didn’t kiss his ass, sink or swim baby. The Texan ROCKS .!we needed energy, not Kieth sittin ,hand holding his head…. Up. Hand on chin or sleep ….Heroin! F@$k dude, snap out of it !!!! Brent Midland Carries the weight!
Tempus fugit. I was in Foxboro two days before this. Deadicated friends traveled off to this one, and a lot of The East Coast tour. They still talk about it. I am just thankful I got to see 7.2.89. Check that whole show on here, which I've waited for for, yes, 35 years! lol
When I was standing there about 50 feet from stage I would never think I would be watching this 31 years later on a computer screen. Life can be strange
True art acts as a catalyst throwing your mind and soul out into the deep mystery of life and it all fades away leaving only being only light this band did it for me I'm a Deadhead
Have to add that this song is a mix of a bunch of different songs. A epic adventure and mental journey through this equasion of excellence. Greatful Dead, I Love you guys. Don't need to know you personally. I just admire your style so f*+king much. ✌️❤️🏴☠️
The 16 minute long studio album version of this, was a revelation for me, a true masterpiece. Complete with orchestra and choir, a trully glorious musical creation, beautiful lyrics too, sheer poetry. The live versions are fine, but somewhat shortened and compromised.
This was my first dead show. What a gift not just to have a killer set, but to have it be released as a DVD! I know most of yall reading this have a tape of your first show - perhaps a second or third gen soundboard on a Maxell XLS2 cassette... But mine is a pro filmed multi camera DVD. It also tells me that the band regarded this show as important as I have
Terrapin has always been one of my fave Dead songs, right from the beginning when it was first released. Well, probably one of my fave songs period.... just something about it that lets my inspiration flow.....
no Keith no Donna? Sweet. This is really nice ! ! Gotta start the song over. Heck yeah, thanks for putting this out here or there , cool cats out under the stars ! K, gotta start the song over.
Def one of the top later terrapins, up there with the Knickerbocker Arena 1990 one and Boston Garden 1991. Heck even the storm of the century 1993 version absolutely shreds.
Jerry's like I'm gonna sing, Terrapin, see if you guys can keep up. Many years ago. His job was to shed light, and not to master. I'm sure 2020 has been a rough year for all of us, I know there are a few weeks to go. Be nice, care for each other. I will not ask. Hope to see you in 2021, if not, we'll be at Terrapin.
Our usual gang of idiots came from Mass. and if I can remember correctly the sound was better here at Rich Stadium than at Foxboro. No surprise really. After the show in the lot the air was so full of smoke from the fireworks people were setting off, everyone whooping it up, as a friend of mine put it at the that moment, it was crazy, like Saigon in 1975. Terrapin was great from the 1st time they played it, & as w/other songs they developed it, (the jam before "inspiration", and the power of the ending, especially if Phil was in a good mood) and then this song became a monster. Thanks Dave for this, brought back a lot of fun memories from a time & world when a 24 yo "Masshole" could always count on the spring, summer and fall bringing some joy & fun into life.
Four minutes thirty two seconds in, I've let the music tickle my cerebellum and the music has begun to play the band. And we're all conscious of being connected now. There's no stopping us, we will steal your lovely face. The train has come to full steam , the monkey pulled the throttle and now terrapin is so close!!!! Should we rise to get there? Or should we fall..? It matters not just get to terrapin!!!
I'm not sure how many Terrapins I heard in person, in the Dead's face, but whatever, meaning in person with the real Dead. I stopped going to shows after Jerry died, but hey, whatever. I still like the songs. I check the "fake dead" out sometimes.
Dude.. the tympany and wis was waaa of Brent's keys mixed with Jerry's improv backed by Bobby just filling nooks and crannies everywhere... bottoming out with Phil bill and mick's bottom end sounds like sugar drops being sliced in the air as they fall from the tree of wisdom. Then crying out as they hit the earth broken in half.
WOW...This made my early Dec morning. THANK YOU! My gf has keot 2 diamondback terrapins in her apt here in NYC for the last 45 years. She saved them friom being made into turtle soup by buying them from the seafood store. In those days it was legal. They answet to Topaz (the male) and Zinger (the female.)
F lydian has such a nice sound. They debuted this to start the 1977 tour at swing auditorium. It was the first song of set 1. Estimated was also played first that night. Could there possibly be any archive video of that gem?
There is a sweet audio release of that Swing auditorium show from Dave's picks series. It's number 29 I believe, from a perfect Betty board given the plantagenet process. Its also HDCD and sounds like they are in the living room with you. I hope you can find video of the show!! Cheers!

Love when Jerry pushes up the glasses and gives a Niagara sized smile - they always crushed these Buffalo shows ⚡️⚡️

Quintessential Grateful Dead
Grateful
Gospel music
Jerry practically animated, even a little swagger. God do I miss him.
I miss them !
You said t
It right there. Swagger
The thing about The Grateful Dead is that (to me) is that they got it. Suddenly the door is opened .. and there is a girl standing there
I drove from NH to Buffalo for this show. Two days later i was working at my retail job and some guy hands me a dollar bill with the setlist of this show written in pen on the dollar bill.
I hope ya got it framed man
Now that's a dollar with real value!

Beyond epic story!
What a period of Renaissance for the dead, the rhythm devils were energetic and animated, Bobby, Brent and Jerry are on top of their games! Phil’s playing is subtle yet rich and masterful... inspiration move me brightly
Im not too sure about jerry being on top of his game, coming out of a coma and forgetting how to play guitar can really fuck your playing
@@malcolmkinsella261 By 1989 Jerry was doing much better. The summer series were great shows.
@@billc6087 '89 and '90 were peak years for the Dead. Their playing was better than ever. The drawback was the predictability of the format.
The spiral light of Venus rising first and shining last🤟😝🤟
I could imagine the college band belting this song out on Saturday night.
Grateful
Wow, 1980s were a mixed bag but this is a great tune/show.
Named my dog after this song back in the 80’s….Terrapin. She was a gentle soul.

Indeed it is! I'd say the most summary Dead tune in their catalog, no? THE ONE TO RULE THEM ALL.
Absolutely. This one always hit differently.
Different? THAT'S putting it mildly! Lol!!
Rare and different tune ⚡️🐢

35 short years ago! Miss you Jer!!!
There are so many Grateful Dead songs but if I had to pick one to be with me it would be this one
I feel the same. If I had to pick one song to try and capture the spirit of the Dead it would be this song.
Arguably Robert Hunters best work. A true masterpiece.
Crazy thing is he wrote it in an afternoon
It’s bananas that this show was THIRTY-ONE years ago!

The compass always points to terrapin
This song speaks to something ancient and profound and sublime.

As a relatively new Dead fan, I'm amazed at how the band is so loose and so tight at the same time! They make it look so easy.
My fave dead song ever . Such a vibe.
I love terrapin....and this is one of my favorites .
