This is beautiful. It’s Guy Clark, Townes’ best friend, singing at his memorial concert and cutting to townes singing it when he was around. Makes you tear up a little.
Damn, how was he able to create music that hits you in the feelings without any warning. Try to sing this without having a pain in your throat. The best.
My favorite TVZ lyrics.... and a man needs a woman to stand by his side and whisper sweet words in his ears about daydreams and roses and playthings and the sweetness of springtime and the sound of the rain
Ron Boyar Townes really was a poet who happened to set his poetry to music. If just read his lyrics on paper without music it’s easy to spot this. Perhaps not with every song, but most of the time, the words don’t come across as song lyrics. They come across as poetry. He was as good at this as anyone I ever heard.
I always forget that Townes really was movie-star handsome before he slid into the abyss. In addition to being a once-in-a-generation musical force, of course.
I heard someone talk about how women ripped their tops off at folk concerts for him which was unheard of in the day. He was gorgeous, funny, sweet, and soon to be destroyed.
This one written by the great Van Zandt. What a TREAT to see these two remarkable musicians playing LIVE, hearing their voices blend, harmonize, their guitars complementing each others'.. They'll live forever through their songs. We are SO fortunate to have You Tube.
How can you not love Townes Van Zandt? He left us way too soon! Stories that needed to be told left on the table. Maybe these are the things we get to experience in heaven when we pass on...
+onemanzguitar acl stated this seven months ago... We are working on releasing all of the Townes Van Zandt footage in our archives, should be available early next year I believe. not sure why you have a problem with seeing a duet that couldn't happen... guy's performance was at the ACL tribute to townes a little over a year after he had passed
+faithful827 That is great news. I have no interest in seeing such a duet. I wanted to see Townes doing this song, unmolested and intruded by other people doing inferior versions, to share with people on his birthday,
lots of jewels of townes all over youtube... it is always such a thrill to stumble on one i haven't seen before ... finding the performance in minnesota and the one in australia was a particular joy
+onemanzguitar This one was from a Townes tribute show on Austin City Limits. Notice the late Susanna Clark sitting in the front row. She was one of Townes' best friends and co-wrote Heavenly Houseboat with him.
so true! i put up the movie "be here to love you" for all to see, the beauty of townes and his hard travelling! the guys from palm pictures blocked it for copyright reasons!!!!???? so stupid !!!
All the people that knew Townes really well said that he had successfully given up heroin. He had been dried out from alcohol abuse about 12 times.Jeanene, his last wife had been told that it could kill him if he was dried out again.Unfortunately she took Townes home from hospital after his hip operation on his insistence, and against medical advice. He immediately had delirium tremens on the way home and was given a flask of vodka to stabilise the condition.A couple of days later he passed away,January 1st,1997,44 years to the day that Hank Williams died.

Townes voice can't be duplicated plus his writing ability far surpassed so many singer/songwriters still working.
There is no one like Jerry Jeff excepting Townes and Guy Clark!

The best.
Very well said!
the structure of the lyrics are pure Townes
So nice!

Wonderful, both renditions, especially with Van Zandt looking like a true cowboy hippie! Love it!

The clip of him in this video seems to be from Austin City Limits. I have seen bits of that performance here on youtube.
Where is the Townes video from? I need to hear the whole thing!
+dmurnizzle both were taken from austin city limits performances ... guy was singing at acl's tribute to townes in '98
It looks like 2 austin city limits
who wrote this one Townes or Guy?? pretty sure it was TVZ
Townes wrote it
When was Guy fitted with false teeth?
Why?
A shame upon whomever is holding the live Townes stuff hostage and forcing people to see these poorly done mashups. Very sad.

He was a junkie that never got clean!
