So many of the great American poets got weaker in their ability to write as they aged, but Guy weaved tapestries of prophetic prose right up until the day he was laid in the ground. The biggest compliment he ever got was that he was never played much on mainstream radio, because his words, those awe-inducing lyrics, his haunting, crackling ghostly voice, and his beautiful strumming was only truly appreciated by those who could grasp the immense layered complexity within his simple verses. A songwriter could live 1,000 years and not pen as perfect and as heart-wrenching a song as Guy penned with Dublin Blues. It’s all there: immense love overflowing, the pain of staring down old age, of unrequited love, and of the echos of a life so full of beauty and pain that one can simply do nothing but listen in complete silence as he sings. You are dearly, dearly missed Guy!

This is the first Guy Clark song I ever heard, when a friend with impeccable and eclectic taste put me on to it. I would say I can't understand why he isn't better known, but I do. His lyrics and music were songs with everything that wasn't essential stripped out. That isn't likely to make you popular; but it does make you great.

Quite simply the best country song ever written....

A lot of people think “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones is the best country song.
I don’t know that there’s one “best.” This one is up there though.

This song always gets me choked up a little...i fell in love with his music back in 92' when i was in college in Texas. I had never even heard of him til then...its the first time i could feel what real country music could be (tho i would call his style folk/country). He's one of the original "Cowboy Poets". A great singer songwriter. I miss being able to hear him play live and in person...but all good things must come to an end...eventually.

One of the 'cosmic cowboys' along with townes, earle, young well in fact too many to mention. To me it's more than country..in fact I'd call it the start of 'Americana' as a proper genre and in the last ten years (as most times happens cos it seems everything is cyclical) the people they inspired now have found great success themselves. Often described (I'd agree) a 'songwriters songwriter' . Regards from Ireland to ya brother.

Out of all the musicians that we've lost this year the 2 that have shocked & hurt me the most because they are musical heroes of mine were Steve Young & Guy Clark. Dublin Blues is a perfect album, not a bad song on it, but then again Guy doesn't know how to write a bad song.

As much as I love Guy, and I do(Boats To Build & Dublin Blues as studio albums are brilliant works of art🙏🎶), he simply didn’t get the “performance gene”, and is sadly uninspiring as a live artist. Sorry, Guy, find a pair of balls, or stick to the studio….And if the excuse is that he’s aged here, I saw him live in ‘94 and even then he faded into the wallpaper…… and I’d say the same for Lucinda Williams as well. Brilliant in the studio, but weak & ineffectual as a live artist. I guess every singer-musician can’t be Bruce Springsteen…🎶🙏😞
