    A few corrections.
    1) these rotors are actually compatible with both resin and metallic pads. I was wrong. They are the cheaper stamped rotors, but I'm glad they're compatible with metallic pads.
    2) You guys made this one happen! THANK YOU for reaching out to bike companies you like and letting them know that you like seeing my reviews of their bikes. You're all the best!
    3) After a few comments here, i believe Marin's house branded bars and stem are made by a well-known component maker, just with Marin's name on it instead. That's great news.

Can't wait for this review Steve....I've had my Elroy for a month now, here in wet, hilly, rooty and muddy NW UK, and I absolutely love it, It's a bomber ! I have a medium at 5 10 and its a perfect fit for a big bike. My Elroy came with an XT rear mech, SLX cassette, SLX, shifter, MT520/MT501 brakes and levers, Deity Mohawk carbon bars and Deity copperhead stem so slightly better specced than this one here. I find it a really smooth and super fun ride on all my local trails, but obviously it loves the steep gnarly stuff, both up and down ! Just to note the Kona ESD is over five hundred dollars more than this bike in the UK. I hope you enjoy this bike as much I do, and I'm really glad Marin sent it to you for review, not many of these around yet. Im really excited to see what you think. Oh, and I totally agree , the black sparkle paint job is stunning with the red Z1 fork - If Darth Vader rode an MTB it would be an Elroy :)

  • @Dark__Thoughts

Double Assegai will be a grippy but sluggish monster, but I guess it fits for a DH focused build. 480 reach sounds crazy for the regular size, that's basically the same as my XL mmmbop - but I'm about 1,90m in height so it is probably more appropriate for me than it will be for you. BB drop is quite a bit lower than the mmmbop too, and the one you had was overforked (so a wee bit higher even) and still had pedal strikes. But yeah, downhill shredding focus galore I guess.

I can understand wanting a supple ride the older I get... But when the rear chain stays flex like that, especially with one hand, it just looks noodly. I'll be interested to hear how it feels in techy / rocky sections, or trying to power uphill.

@Bob Longhorn keep in mind I'm flexing it side to side, not up and down. Normally there's an axle/wheel bolted in there to keep everything triangulated and stiff. Still, it illustrates the flexible nature of the seatstays.
If you haven't noticed it on a ride, i wouldn't worry too much.

I have used semi metallic pads on my on my resin only rotors and I haven't had a problem . Looks like it will have great straight line speed pointing downhill . It may lack on turns and switchbacks . Curious to see how the climbing will be . I ride a hardtail at about the same weight and I think being heavier has its advantage being more planted on the ground . If your going from a lighter bike to a heavier you probably will take more effort to climb but if that's what you ride your body will adapt and become a bit stronger . Nice review Steve .

I know FSA makes some Ok stuff, but the low end cranks on my wife's bike where a CHUNK and were never smooth. Swapped out for SLX cranks on an XTR BB and it makes the whole bike feel like the next price bracket. I feel you on the crank length too, went with 165 cranks and they are a much more appropriate fit for her size small frame.

Internal routing is a total pain when you're building a frame or swapping parts out. The only benefit is aesthetics, and it often causes more rattling. I believe hardtails should be simple and easy to swap parts on and off. External cable routing is the simplest way to go.

I have to ride 3 miles uphill on a paved public road to hit my steep trails and it does just fine. Yes it drags a bit, its no racer, but it's super comfy if you are happy enough plodding along. Now, sustained climbs on steep rough stuff - I think it's an amazing climber, however my reference points are significantly fewer than hardtail party's !

Would it be typical for a flexible frame like that to have the rear triangle "relax" or widen if it sat for a year with no axle or hub in it?

    • @hardtailparty

No. They weld it in place on a jig and the welds hold it in the exact spor. It wouldn't move in a thousand years.

Deore 12 speed versus a Deore 11 speed on a new bike, other than losing a gear, is there really much other difference?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, there are a few major differences. 12 speed requires a microspline hub, 11 speed requires an hg driver. The 12 speed has a much lower gear as well, and the high gear is higher as well. Is it worth it? That's up to you.
