Thank you for your endless work to repeal these! I am a retired educator ( retired in 2014) and finally am able to get my full Social Security, thanks to your efforts, and, those of our senators and representatives!!
Thank you both so much. I’m so grateful. 24+ years paying in to SS then a second career to teacher for 10 years, teaching public high school until age 60, not knowing that it would mean my SS would be cut by hundreds per month! A wrong has been righted for so many people.
Thanks for your efforts to get this passed. I retired in 2006 from federal employment and have been through the mill financially ever since. Hopefully I will be able to dig myself out of the hole that WEP put me in. Sen Markey is definitely one of the good guys. We need more of his kind in the Senate. (Your facebook was a lifeline for me Dec 20 when I was wondering if we would get a final vote before midnight.) Thanks again.
It does apply to Federal Employees who retired under CSRS. Anyone hired in 1984 or later is in FERS & paid SS so the WEP/GPO never applied to them. Employees hired before 1984 were in CSRS & didn’t pay SS but if they had 40 quarters from previous or post employment they can get SS but the WEP/GPO applied.
Husband died at age 52 of Cancer, after years over 30 year in Social security! I was working in law-enforcement,when I was age 67, in 2013 collected my spouse benefits, then in 2014, retired and went on PERS. Social Security took every penny of my husbands benefits away. When needing it the most! Explain that to me.? I worked as long as I could!
The reason why is that when both spouses pay into Social Security, they only can receive the higher of one benefit, not both benefits. Now you will get a handout that the 97 percent who have paid into Social Security for more than 30 years will have to pay.
Despite three amendments that certain senators tried to attach it, they all got heavily voted down and this measure finally passed after midnight on the east coast by a score of 76-20!
Do you think the 20 Senators who voted "Nay" (Cancun Cruz, McConnell, Grassley, etc., go back to their States and crow and take credit for the passage of H.R. 82? And why did 16 Republican Senators not cosponsor the bill all along and then suddenly vote "Yea"? Because Trump endorsed the Social Security Fairness Act on Dec. 16th at Mar-a-Lago with the Police Fraternal Order? Hypocrites!
I heard that he only signed the general budget for 3 more months but did not sign the SS Fairness Bill. I guess I'm not breathing yet either, gees! People who need help might have to wait past January for help if he keeps sitting on this.
Yes, the SS Fairness Bill DID pass just after midnight in the Senate. Talk about a GREAT Christmas! Around a 5K lump sum plus 418.00 EVERY month starting in January. Woo Hoo!!!!
Thank you to all that worked on this bill for so long. Justice has finally come to those of us affected by this theft of our Social Security benefits. I didn’t think I would Live to see this day!
Hard to believe any political party would have voted on such a,bill. Specialy that effected on these groups it did. Very greedy windfall for any government to do. I am so happy that the House and Senate passed this,Fairness Act! Its like taking the chains off! Appreciated the hard word this Retirement group has done to make this happen! Thank you
I have had to keep working past full retirement age to make up for WEP! I am still working as an educator and receive my full SS payment. Now I don’t have to worry about WEP reduction of at least forty percent once I retire and receive a pension.
Amazing this past... They keep saying 2.8 / 3 million people. That current SS recipients! How about retired cops like me who are 43... and the millions of others like me? This law effects millions of us in our future benefits too. This was a big F'ing deal and was a long time coming.
Thank you. Left California teaching. Moved to RI I HAD A CORPORATE job in between so this weighed heavy on me having retired 2017 and loosing over $450 monthly from SS AND GINA changing the whole retirement benefits here in ri. SO THANKS

For the reform include FRA, Tax, COLA are need to be re-discussed seriously
This is an immense achievement. I had lost hope in the possibility of ending WEP/GPO. I do wonder if retirees will receive full back compensation for Social Security payments that had been clawed back from payments from when they first retired…or if only future checks will reflect the full amounts which they had rightly earned. Does anyone know? Grateful for your responses… It is a great day! Thanks to all who fought for this!
@@ioanfa528 Too bad, but that would truly break the bank! Grateful for everything achieved after a 40 year struggle! Thank you everyone who fought by writing letters to representatives, by never giving up! 😊
I am conflicted about this. As a retired LEO I think I will be a recipient of some benefit. However, I DID NOT pay SSI payments from 1981 - 2005. Instead, I paid 6% to a City Pension System and 6% to a State Pension. I have been receiving payment from those two systems since 2006. I also receive a small SSI payment for earnings before and after my LEO career. So, I feel like I really might be receiving an additional benefit I did not pay for. That said, I will accept it if it is due to me under the law. The good part is, I'll recycle it back into the economy buying necessities for my family.
Woohoo!!! I finally believe in the government again. The GPO has been a hardship for me as a widow. Now I can finally pay my bills! I’m also thankful for the crackdown on the student loans and the drive to forgive those with the Public Service loans. I’m actually going to get mine forgiven after 148 payments when I was only required to make 120 payments! Thank you to everyone who has made these two criminal programs be held accountable for their theivery! It’s a miracle and LIS, I finally believe the government can be held responsible for stealing from citizens!
The wealthiest of Americans do not pay a fair share of taxes. One specific entitlement, namely the tax cap, is a huge problem. WEP and GPO has been an HIGH effective tax on the middle class that makes this country what it is. It was crazy to watch Rand and Cruz try to torpedo the bill in the 11th hour. This brand of politician is not looking out for the middle class. They did identify the need to fix the system. Well do it on the wages of people who can handle the higher effective tax. This is so wrong, despite the fact this will double my monthly SS payment from $600 to $1,200. My problem is honesty. Like most of you, I will collect every penny I put into the SS within my first three to five years of payments. And because the average age in the USA is about 80, most of us will collect SS far longer than 5 years. But because SS is probably the largest Ponzi Scheme in the history of the world, few know or feel the actual bite/cost. Of course I understand why the vast majority of you are happy, you're getting more money. But you're either intellectually dishonest, or ignorant of SS facts.
Sad day for Social Security. Nothing but a political handout. If the public understood how Social Security does it calculations, the 3 percent wouldn't get this handout.
@ckg-mr5uq Your not talking about WEP because they got paid. As far as GPO, spouses that paid into Social Security can only get the higher of one benefit, not both. Why spouses who didn' pay into Social Security and receive a non covered pension get both? Nothing but a political handout.
@josephcalp1604 So getting the money their deceased spouses paid into the system is a handout? Don't you know that members of congress get pensions and social security plus congress " borrows" from it and pays none of it back. I appreciate your reply and look forward to your further thoughts on this.
@ckg-mr5uq My thoughts is that spouses who paid into Social Security for more than 30 years should get their own plus their spouse benefit. Come Jan 3rd my main focus is to get the repeal updated to peoples records so the WEP and GPO has stopped and retro benefits paid as soon as possible.
