  • In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on the Vitória-Minas Railway, the first part of the journey (out of four) between Pedro Nolasco/Cariacica/Vitória and Baixo Guandu in the Brazilian Federal State Espírito Santo in 4K/60 frames per second.
    The Vitória-Minas Railway (Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas; EFVM) is a metre gauge railway line linking the cities of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais and Vitória, Espírito Santo, in Brazil. It is a 905 km line with a minimum curve radius of 195 metres and a maximum ramp of 1.5%, which allows a maximum speed of 67 kilometres per hour. The first stretch of the railway was inaugurated in 1904 with the initial aim of transporting passengers by rail and transporting the coffee production of the Rio Doce Valley and Espírito Santo. However, its focus changed in 1908 transporting the iron ore to the port complexes of Espírito Santo. In 1991, the railway reached the capital of Minas Gerais.
    The train crosses a region with a significant amount of mountains and rivers and typical vegetation alternating between Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, with a large part of its length on the banks of the Doce River, until it reaches the beaches of Espírito Santo.
    Together with the Carajás Railway (Pará-Maranhão) in the Northeast of Brasil, it is one of the last railways to carry out passenger transport over long distances, maintaining a total of 30 boarding and disembarking points served along the 664 kilometres covered by the passenger train. A train departs daily from Cariacica, in the metropolitan region of Vitória, Espírito Santo, bound for Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais and in oposite direction. All together it is a 13h 30 min journey. Both lines are operated by Vale Company which has an extensive logistics network to quickly integrate mines, railroad, ships and ports present on approximately 2000 kilometer of railroad network in Brazil.
    I would like to thank Vale for giving me the opportunity to record this video and for all the valuable help from the staff.

    I won’t compare train speed in Brazil with those in France or Germany. Everyone knows that Brazil does not priorize railways (some still say “privatization is best”). But I have to admit that Vale makes a huge effort to keep this train in tracks. One of the few passengers long route in Brazil, it runs at a maximum speed of 70km/h. Well, at that speed you really can enjoy the gorgeous landscape between Vitoria and Belo Horizonte.

    The only two long-distance passenger trains in Brazil belong to the company Vale, privatized in May 1997. Its railways are the Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas (EFVM), with a metric gauge, whose passenger trains runs from Belo Horizonte - MG Cariacica/Vitória - ES; and the Carajás Railway (EFC), broad gauge (1.60 meters), between São Luís - MA and Parauapebas - PA.
    One of the conditions imposed by the federal government for the privatization of Vale was the continuity of its passenger trains, which provide a social service in the regions where they operate.
    It is a paradox, as this same federal government ordered the end of passenger trains in other parts of the country from its former operator Rede Ferroviária Federal (RFFSA), mainly between 1990-96, when itself (RFFSA) was privatized in 1998.
    There was another railway operator in the State of São Paulo (Ferrovias Paulistas S.A. - Fepasa), formed in 1971 by the merger of five railways that had already belonged to the São Paulo state government since 1961. Fepasa had passenger trains, however, due to the debts of the São Paulo government towards the federal government, Fepasa was used as a bargaining chip and incorporated by RFFSA shortly before its own privatization. As a result, long-distance passenger trains were abolished in Brazil, with the exception of the two Vale trains. Obviously the new private freight railway operators were not interested in passenger transport.
    For the transport of people, there are a few short tourist trains left in Brazil, suburban [commuter] trains (mainly those from São Paulo - SP [which has the best service, or the less worse] and Rio de Janeiro - RJ), and the metro systems of São Paulo - SP (the largest in the country), Rio de Janeiro - RJ, Brasília - DF, Salvador - BA, Belo Horizonte - MG, Porto Alegre - RS, Recife - PE, Fortaleza - CE, Natal - RN, Maceió - AL and João Pessoa - PB. As for metro services, only those in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and Salvador have underground sections, the others are surface.
    É um paradoxo, pois esse mesmo governo federal determinou o fim dos trens de passageiros em outras partes do país da sua antiga operadora Rede Ferroviária Federal (RFFSA), principalmente entre 1990-96, quando ela mesma (RFFSA) foi privatizada em 1998.
    Houve um outro operador ferroviário no Estado de São Paulo (Ferrovias Paulistas S.A. - Fepasa), formada em 1971 pela fusão de cinco ferrovias que já pertenciam ao governo estadual paulista desde 1961. A Fepasa tinha trens de passageiros, porém, em função das dívidas do governo paulista para com o governo federal, a Fepasa foi utilizada como moeda de troca e incorporada pela RFFSA pouco antes da sua própria privatização. Com isso, os trens de passageiros de longa distância foram extintos no Brasil, excetuando-se os dois trens da Vale. Obviamente os novos operadores ferroviários privados de cargas não se interessaram pelo transporte de passageiros.
    Para o transporte de pessoas, restam no Brasil alguns poucos trens turísticos de pequena extensão, os trens de subúrbio (principalmente os de São Paulo - SP [que possui o melhor serviço, ou o menos pior] e do Rio de Janeiro - RJ), e os sistemas metroviários de São Paulo - SP (o maior do país), Rio de Janeiro - RJ, Brasília - DF, Salvador - BA, Belo Horizonte - MG, Porto Alegre - RS, Recife - PE, Fortaleza - CE, Natal - RN, Maceió - AL e João Pessoa - PB. Apenas os metrôs de São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília e Salvador possuem trechos subterrâneos; os demais são de superfície.

    Greetings from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil! Congratulations on showing us one of our country's only two long-distance passenger rail journeys. Brazil has the following railway gauges (statistics vary greatly depending on the sources consulted):
    a) Narrow gauge (or metric, 1,00 meter): 23.489 km;
    b) Broad gauge (or "Irish", 1,60 meter): 4.050 km;
    c) Standard gauge (1,435 meter): 202.4 km
    d) Mixed gauge (1,00 meter and 1,60 meter): 336 km
    Total: 28.077,4 km
    Very little for a country of continental dimensions.
    Cargo transportation in Brazil:
    62% by highways
    30% by railways
    The remainder is transported by waterways, sea and air.
    In other words, Brazil is still a country highly dependent on highways, which increases our internal costs. During the 2018 truck drivers' strike, there was a lack of fuel and food in several parts of the country.
    Em português:
    Saudações de Salvador, Bahia, Brasil! Parabéns em nos mostrar uma das duas únicas viagens de trens de passageiros de longa distância do nosso país. O Brasil possui as seguintes bitolas ferroviárias (as estatísticas variam muito a depender das fontes consultadas):
    a) Bitola estreita (ou métrica, 1,00 metro): 23.489 km;
    b) Bitola larga (ou "irlandesa", 1,60 metro): 4.050 km;
    c) Bitola padrão (1,435 metro): 202,4 km
    d) Bitola mista (1,00 metro e 1,60 metro): 336 km
    Total: 28.077,4 km
    Muito pouco para um país de dimensões continentais.
    Transporte de cargas no Brasil:
    62% por rodovias
    30% por ferrovias
    O restante é transportado por hidrovias (rios), mar e ar.
    Em outras palavras, o Brasil ainda é um país altamente dependente das rodovias, o que aumenta os nossos custos internos. Durante a greve dos caminhoneiros de 2018, houve falta de combustíveis e alimentos em várias partes do país.

    Nice video as always. We start from the State of Espirito Santo to reach the Rio doce area in Baixo Guandù. I noticed that the signaling system is still present with various traffic lights and even older signaling systems. I noticed a bit of carelessness in the first part of the video when you exit the Cargo Yard. A line like this in Europe would be electrified, but I don't understand why the speed is only a maximum of 70 km/h? Maybe it also depends on the braking system and the type of locomotive? A beautiful line like those managed by Vale S.p.a. Thanks for the video

      Train control is radio based (cab signalling with some kind of CBTC), that is why there are no visual signals, apart from block markers and some other signals (speed, level crossings). Every switchover station has a large radio tower adjacent to allow for communication with the train and as there are no operational staff everything looks centrally controlled from a control centre. On large parts of the line there are also poles with probably electrical and optical communication cables to feed all the (automated) equipment along the line.

      North American practice and regulations - trains starting and stopping, level crossings, when passing other trains, in curves with poor visibility. That is SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

    Great railway! I wonder what the maximum speed of these 2,5 kms goods trains are......My guess is this trip is divided in three parts with destination Belo Horizonte. Am I right?

    • @ZvonimirZelenika
      @ZvonimirZelenika 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Operational speed on the line is 65km/h, with typically three 4400HP (3300kW) engines (two front and one mid) maybe even fully loaded trains can achieve the full operational speed as gradients are rather low on the whole route and being double track with switchovers probably allows for continuous operation without much waiting on the passing loops.

    Irmão vou te dar uma ideia. Seu canal é sensacional, sou da aviação mas a área ferroviária me encanta muito também. Enfim, retire esse tanto de informações da tela, deixe apenas a velocidade máxima da linha e a velocidade que o trem está. E cada passagem por cidade ou estação, você coloca a hora que está passando e o nome do local. Apenas uma sugestão, abraço e sucesso sempre!!

    • @ZvonimirZelenika
      @ZvonimirZelenika 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is radio based, every switchover station has large radio tower next to it, probably for CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) so it must be some kind of cab signalling and central traffic management (there is no operational staff along the line).

      @@RailRelaxation Greetings from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil! Congratulations on showing us one of our country's only two long-distance passenger rail journeys. Brazil has the following railway gauges (statistics vary greatly depending on the sources consulted):
      a) Narrow gauge (or metric, 1.00 meter): 23,489 km;
      b) Broad gauge (or "Irish", 1.60 meter): 4,050 km;
      c) Standard gauge (1,435 meter): 202.4 km
      d) Mixed gauge (1.00 meter and 1.60 meter): 336 km
      Total: 28,077.4 km
      Very little for a country of continental dimensions.
      Cargo transportation in Brazil:
      62% by highways
      30% by railways
      The remainder is transported by waterways, sea and air.
      In other words, Brazil is a country highly dependent on highways, which increases our internal costs. During the 2018 truck drivers' strike, there was a lack of fuel and food in several parts of the country.
