    I ate a hot dog with prawn salad in Sweden a long time ago.. It was so good that I think I've never eaten anything that good with prawn salad before. Even the prawn salad itself was the best I've so far tasted. I recommend anyone visiting Sweden to go to a good grill/food shop to get one.

    One of my favorite memories of visiting Stockholm is standing outside in front of a street vendor, in 25 degree snowy weather, eating this! It was so steamy, so comfort-food-y and delicious!

      No not really, It's no different than any other American trying. Tunnbroaed roulle is basically how she pronounced Tunnbrödrulle. I'm not blaming her for that tho, but you commending it as correct is just wrong. Du vet själv att det inte lät rätt när hon sa det.
      No need to tell someone they did it great when they did not, It's better to not say anything at that point and instead compliment the video instead of their flawed Swedish.

    • @markiangooley
      @markiangooley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aaron W I can get pickled loroco buds here in south Florida but nobody grows the vines and sells the fresh buds! (Supposedly you can plant seeds in spring even in cold places and have flowers before frost.) It’s strange. I know that there are restrictions on importing fresh loroco due to fears of spreading pest insects, but nobody grows them here.

      @@emmymade Because we're a very non-tropical country. So when new exotic fruits reach our shores, we're not quite sure what to do with them. And they might end up in weird places.
      It isn't all that long ago, only about half a century, that imported fresh produce the other side of the world, like bananas, were an exotic luxury you wanted to put in fancy dinnerparty type of dishes to show off how a; sofisticated you were to use all them fancy ingredients, and b; that you could afford them.
      Thus bananas+chicken+peanuts (also an exotic thing from far away places).

      Ruby Doomsday In the 80’s and 90’s I would get scoffed at when we had KFC, and I would layer: mashed potatoes, cole slaw, bits of chicken, drizzle with gravy, and if I had it, sprinkle with cheese. They thought it was gross. Then in the early 2000’s KFC came out with the “bowls”. 😲 I was actually kinda miffed about it. They stole “my” recipe I came up with at 7 years old, and now make money off of it. The ones that scoffed now suddenly like it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😒😂

    Some tips if you ever want to make this again. The shrimp salad used in the hotdog stands is a commercial product and a little hard to emulate. Aside from mayo and shrimp it also contains a large amount of finely diced white beetroot ( i beliieve yellow or polka beets would suffice) a small amount of finelly chopped sweet apple and a little bit of onion (shallots would do nicely) and also a tiny amount of katchup to sweeten it and turn it a "shrimpy" shade of pink. No dill though, but it is a nice addition.
    You could try it with some boiled sausages like wiienerwurst. but ordinary hotdogs work well. But use something that fits the bread a little better, you should be able to "close off" the bottom side of the roll to avoid spillage. The bread will be easier to roll if you heat it up in pan or on a griddle. Dont toast it, just heat it and spread a little bit of butter on the "inside".

    • @nena5518
      @nena5518 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the beets and onionbits are lightly pickled as well giving the shrimp salad much more of a relish taste.

    • @OldVikingSchool
      @OldVikingSchool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The commercial shrimp salad is very easy to emulate(and lacks that rancid taste). Around 25% shrimps, 40% mayo, 25% sour cream, 2% lemon juice, 4% Heinz chili sauce(or any imitation of it), 4% malt vinegar(HP sauce or Worcestershire sauce) then spices: Dill, white pepper, paprika(regular, not smoked), cayenne, and onion powder. You can thank me later for this. It is possible to raise the shrimp ratio by reducing the mayo/sour cream combo.

    Very authentic! Loved your detailed analysis. Tunnbröd also has rye and barley flour in it.. The licoricey taste comes from ground fennel seeds.
    This is one of those, if not the number one food Swedish people will eat wandering home tipsy from a night on the town.
    There are other varieties as well. One has roast beef. Fried mashed potatoes and steppsallad. (a coleslaw with mayo, sour cream, onions horseradish and apple/pineapple in it.)
    Or the meatball sandwich.. Meatballs (fried but cold).. And red beet sallad (red beets, mayo, sour cream and apple), roasted onions and crispy vegetables.
    Another one is Rödspätterulle. It’s a breaded deep fried plaice fillet, with mashed potatoes, fresh red onions, and danish remoulade..

    I just tried this today and it is DELICIOUS! I don’t have an IKEA where I live, so I had to make some substitutions. I couldn’t find a source for the flatbread, so I substituted homemade lefse (first time making that, too-it almost failed, but I made it work at the last minute). I substituted canned tiny shrimp for the frozen, just because I wanted to buy only a small quantity of it. And the fried onions were just regular French fried onions you put in green bean casserole. Still, it turned out great! I’m not a ketchup fan, but I put it on anyway for authenticity’s sake. I found I really liked the flavor of it combined with the other flavors. Love your channel, Emmy!

    You should make salchipapas or even better, pique macho!! When I moved abroad to Bolivia when I graduated, every single night I would walk down the street to the one sole street vendor and would buy a plate or two of salchipapas! Salchipapas is cut hot dogs, on top of French fries. Most Bolivians would put mayo on it; I like it the way it is, BUT I love pique macho!! Pique is hotdogs, fries, steak with a salad of red onion; jalapeño and tomatoes! And you put the steak juices on it and it’s just so darn tootin good lol

    The very first Swedish flatbread wrap (at Loffe's Grill in Stockholm, back in the 60's) consisted of flatbread, hotdog, mash, mustard, ketchup and dill pickle relish, so if you are sceptical about the shrimp salad, just skip it. It is by no means an essential part of the dish. The flatbread wrap (and you can call it just that, no need to struggle trying to pronounce tunnbrödsrulle) is very adaptable, and although it most often includes the hotdog and mashed potatoes, there are variations even on that. I strongly recommend the fried onions though.

    The store bought premade shrimp salad in Sweden that most people buy as it is so good there is no taste of dill to it. You can't really taste any sour cream or crème fresh either. It is just lovely creamy. Before the hamburger chains invaded we had numerous of small snack bars that in Sweden was called Korvkiosk. It had the name korv/sausage even if they also sold a variety of different hambugers too. Tunnbrödrulle was very popular and was considered to be a big filling meal. The pieces of thin bread we use is a lot bigger than the one you have and therefor have space for more mashed potatoes.. After eating out a bit with the fork so it's less full we usually just skipped the fork and squeezed it together so we could eat it more like how a burrito is eaten. Ty for your videos, they are great.

    Interesting! I lived in Norway for 9 months instead of my senior year of high school. My teacher had a lot of very funny jokes about Sweden, as I'm sure the Swedes do about Norway. Anyway, baby shrimp with mayo open-faced sandwiches were popular, as was shrimp salad. Once I was taking an 8 hour bus ride to my relatives for the holidays, and this lady sitting near me made an entire shrimp salad sandwich, complete with mixing the ingredients together in a paper cup, and a piece of lettuce. I was totally baffled by this as we had just had an hour-long break while the driver ate his meal, but there was nowhere to purchase any of the ingredients, and why didn't she make it while there were tables? Funny the things that stick with you, this was almost 10 years ago.

Whenever someone needs something random I generally have it. 🤓 You never know how long you’ll be out. Always be prepared. I blame being a latchkey kid and having _Giligan’s Island_ to raise me. Here's a selection of "Norway jokes" that I'm pretty sure are only ever told in the school playground:
      How do you stop a Norwegian from entering your yard?
      You put up a badminton net; They'll just stand there not knowing if they should try to jump over it or crouch to try to get under it.
      How do you sink a Norwegian submarine?
      You dive down and knock on the hatch until they open it.
      How do you sink a Norwegian submarine if they're wise to your first method?
      You dive down, knock on the hatch and then they'll open it and say: "You can't trick us again!" before being flooded.

Thai's use sugar not just to sweeten, but, like salt, as a flavour enhancer (it also helps offset spicy too)... my guess is that's why the Russians add sugar to the water to boil potatoes, as a flavour enhancer...

    I spent the summer of 2013 in Lund, Sweden as a college study abroad student. Before I left for my trip, I did all kinds of research about what to see, what to eat, and I saw the tunnbrödsrulle mentioned on an episode of "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations". I was like, "Okay, a hotdog with mashed potatoes, I could understand, but SHRIMP SALAD? This is either going to be delicious or . . . not so much. And I'm so trying one when I get to Sweden."
    Well, I did try it and, to quote Anthony himself, it was "the finest and best thing I've ever had in my life". It was SO GOOD! Seriously, if they had tunnbrödsrulle stands here in the States, they would give New York hotdogs a run for their money. Glad to see that there's a version you can make at home. Now I can take a trip back to Sweden and my college years. Tack, Emmy!

    Obligatory Swedish commenter: I'm impressed! First of all, I'm happily surprised IKEA sells these kind of things abroad, alongside the meatballs and such. The shrimps especially.
    Considering what you had to work with, this went really well. If I had to critique anything, I'd suggest upping the size of everything, but you were sort of limited by the tunnbröd (tunn=thin, bröd=bread). As you mentioned this is most commonly eaten after a night out when your eyes are drunk and hungrier than your mouth and pride can reasonably handle. We're talking 2-3 generous ice cream scoops of buttered mash, two thick sausages off the grill (like German bratwurst-size) and several tablespoons of shrimp salad. Common to top it off with roast onions (as you did), ketchup and course mustard. Up north they sometimes slather it with lingonberry jam, but that's optional.
    Meals this size are known as "skrovmål" (pronounced "skrove-mole"), where "skrov" translates to the hull of a ship and "mål" to meal - literally a shipload of food.
    Sound a bit much to eat a handheld holiday dinner in a state of questionable coordination? Well, 'round here we work and play equally as hard. When the evil bartender makes your wallet feel empty, at least the weenie-man can make your tummy and heart feel full.
    Thank you for reading!

    In Singapore, if you visit the hawker centres or food courts, you will find these economical rice stores that sells a wide variety of side dishes that are served together with white rice. you are able to choose whatever dishes you want and they will charge you accordingly depending on what you choose, and one of the dishes is a hot dog dish that is stirfried with diced potatoes and this sweet, sour ketchup sauce. its quite good with rice!

    Emmy, a way we used hot dogs in Puerto Rican cooking is with pigeon peas (gandules) and plantain balls (bollitos de guineo) over rice. You chop up the hot dog (or vienna sausages too) and add them to the peas and plantain balls to stew and lay it over a bed of medium grain white rice. Absolutely delicious!

    The part that really seems odd to me is the lettuce. Plenty of hot dog recipes use potatoes, particularly Italian hot dogs from here in NJ and, as you mentioned, the mayo and dill push the shrimp salad into potato or possibly macaroni salad territory and they certainly work as side dishes to a hot dog, but I just can't get my head around the idea of lettuce on a hot dog. Also, best outro ever. lol 👋Nothing like waving with your food. 🌭

    Hi Emmy, I have a good hot dog recipe for you. I call these New Jersey Hot Dogs because my husband ate something similar when he was a kid growing up in the Newark area. First I use a mandolin set at the thinnest possible setting and slice up potatoes, green bell peppers, and sweet Vidalia onions. Then all of this gets deep fried. Once everything is done, drain and then deep fry the hot dogs. A good all beef dog is best for this, one with a nice, snappy casing is the best. Then I serve all of this on a very good Italian hogie with a nice spicy mustard (Goulden's was always good). My hubby said this was very close to what he used to eat as a kid, but much better.
