Canon eos 40D - Cheap but Capable

  • Canon eos 40D has been out for a while and it is still one of a legendary cameras for many Canon shooters today for what it brings to the table and the results that it still produces. For under 60 euros that you can find it for nowadays, this camera still delivers a lot on features and image quality. In this video, I'd like to give you my thoughts on the camera and why I still highly recommend this camera to many people. Of course, it is not the camera for everyone, but for the price and the age of the camera as well as for what it still can do, this still camera deserves some attention (and respect). :-)

    Love this camera, i bring it on my cycle tours, since people tend to flock to the current thing which is mirrorless cameras, DSLRs are going for cheap, and really good ones too, never been a better time to get into photography. The truth is, 10 mp is still plenty, this camera relies more on a competent user than newer cameras which makes the whole thing fun, i don't want a camera that rewards someone for being sloppy, you need to put more thought into the shooting process, going back to older cameras got me back into photography again. Most modern photographers have no idea what photography is really about, the obsession with ultra sharp images and this and that really put me off, i care more about a well exposed well composed image than anything else.

      Haha, my rigs aren't monsters to be honest with you but compare to quite a few modern day semi-professional cameras, the Canon eos 40d felt really nice a light in my hands and also compact! I very much enjoyed using it and it's also a fun camera to use. :-)

    I had a mint 50d but sold it off for pretty cheap. I realised that i dont need a fancy camera. I just need a camera that can take a photo and thats it. Before this, i never quite get why photographers always say that great didn't matter. To me back then, gear is everything. Now, i understand.

    Hi. Great review. I looked at this because I own such a camera. One part of the review which confused me though was when you referred to the rubber cover on the base of the camera and said you had to remove that to fit the battery pack and then had no where to store the rubber bung/cover. I have NEVER removed this rubber cover when fitting my battery pack for the EOS40D and so I decided to do some research on this mysterious cover and what was it's purpose. The user manual makes scant mention of it only referring to it as the "Extension System Terminal". After doing a bit of searching on the internet I found out that this port on the bottom of the camera which is normally covered with the rubber cover, is in fact the connection port for connecting with the accessory Canon WFT-E3 Wireless transmission unit which actually looks very like a Canon 40D battery pack but is in fact for transmitting files wirelessly from the camera to a computer and it also allows for wireless remote control of the camera functions from a PC. Who knew! I certainly didn't until you mentioned the "mystery rubber bung". So now we both know........oh, and you can now feel free to re insert the rubber bung/cover into it's place AND attach the battery pack with the cover still in place. I've learned something I never knew about the 40D thanks to you and maybe it will be of help to anyone else who reads this comment?

    • @DavidCuhls

      Thank you for doing the research and sharing it with everyone here, that's very nice of you. :-) Also thank you very much for watching as well as for putting the time and effort into sharing your comments, really appreciate that too! :-) Yes, the rubber cover is very common for many canon cameras, I went to the same process of researching back when I first bought my 5d mark ii back when it came out and discovered pretty much the same results. Despite more modern cameras having bluetooth, wifi and NFC options, Canon will have this port underneath a lot of their cameras (of course for those who needs faster and more reliable speed/connections).
      Thank you very much again for watching and for the comment, really appreciated it. :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

    Great SOC colors and easy to edit raws. Something I remarked with older Canons that the shadows are not that dark like in the newer 20mp+ bodies so I don,t have to brighten them up so much. The 10mp ist fine , but on the low side, so be very careful with your framing. 6.5 frames are quite impressive and focus is also pretty sticky. Endless battery life! I was pleasantly surprised about this classic camera with giving me a lot of fun to shoot. Great Fun for only 40 Euros (shutter count 6500)!

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I couldn't agree more with you, the Canon eos 40D is really still good camera. The colours are quite nice and unique, 10 megapixels is still enough for normal use, the frame rates are still more than good enough as well and the files are also still robust should one need to manipulate a bit. Sure, there are some limitations due to the age. However, it really is not such a huge deal since most of the limitations can be work around. For the price, you really can't go wrong. Congrats on having the camera as well, I am sure you've produced some great results with it. The 40D is the twin of the 50D, the latter has an extra 5 million megapixel. They are the apsc versions of the iconic 5D Mk l. Very durable and reliable. Produces beautiful color resolution ad image quality. This will be a good camera especially for beginners.

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, the 50d is only mainly improves on more logically arranged buttons, megapixel count and low light capability. But the overall ergonomics feels solidly the same. That said, I would not dare say that it is the apsc version of the 5d mark i since the colour science is very different, the design of the grip is also very different, the rendition in colours as well as the colour depth is also very different... Sure, there are for sure many technological differences between the cameras but I would say that the rendition of the images from the 5d classic is much smother and has more character. Furthermore, the contrast is also more pleasing on the 5d classic than the 40d and 50d. That said, due to the age of the technology as well as the target group of users, the 50d and to a certain extent, the 40d is a bit more reliable to use than the 5d classic as well as faster and more efficient to operate in my opinion. Thank you very much for watching and also for commenting, really appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      @@DavidCuhls i find the colour science of the 50D to be somewhat like the 5D mkiii (despite that the 50D was introduced around 3.5 years prior to the 5D mkiii).
      and i find the 20D imagery to have some similarities to the 5Dc.

    Seen a 40D advertised by a UK camera dealership, described as “good condition” for £45 plus £5.95 postage. Decided to take a punt on this after watching a couple of reviews. My expectations are relatively low but for that price (and a 6 month warranty!), I’m hoping it will be a nice addition to my Canon 550D and Ricoh GRii. I already own a few EF mounted lenses (although non are weather sealed!) but if I purchase a cheap weather sealed lens, I’m hoping the combo will give me a cheap option as a carry for some street photography when the weather in the UK demands this!

      MAK, if you set the control dial on the camera to the green square then the only thing you will have to do is press the shutter button to take a photograph and the camera will do everything else for you. If you want to learn how to use all the settings on the camera then you can download the Canon 40D user manual for free in .pdf format from the Canon website which will explain in detail what all the functions and settings are on the camera. Hope this helps.

    Hello david I have two options to buy:
    Canon 40d (for 150$)
    Or
    Nikon d3000 (for 100$)
    Both in great condition with 18-55mm lens
    Which one is better for me? This will be my first camera

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a first camera but also a long term investment, I would say that the Canon eos 40d would be a better option. The Canon eos 40d has better image quality, the files are also more robust should you wish to edit them later in post, better lowlight performance, better autofocusing system and the 40d is also weather sealed. Sure, the D3000 might be lighter and smaller (which can be a benefit if you want to travel with the camera a lot) but the 40d has a much tougher build body than the d3000. That said, this is only my opinion, you should also think about which feature is more important to you since at the end of the day, they both still deliver nice results. Hope that helps somewhat. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

    I am thinking about getting a used 40 or 550d. Which one will be best in you opinion ?

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The 550d will deliver better image quality (more dynamic range, better colour reproduction, better white balance and skin tones and much better low light performance as well) than the 40D. Furthermore, you may already know that the 40d does not shoot videos but the 550d does. If this feature does not matter to you then it is okay. I think it really comes down to the type of features you need. If you need a faster frame rate camera with better built quality that you still can use in tough weather situations, then the 40d is a much better option. That being said, you will also have to have a weather sealed lens if you want a completely sealed body.
      However, if you want sharper & better image quality (even in low light situations) with the bonus of being able to shoot videos, sharper and brighter screen to view your images with better colour representation, then the 550d is better for you. Of course, it won't be as fast nor as tough as the 40d but if you care more about the image quality, and having a lighter/smaller body, then the 550d will not disappoint.

    • @monirulalam1035

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see, then I think maybe it is best to invest in the 550d for the long term investment. The technology is much better and produces better images. It might not be a tough camera as the 40d but it is still tough to a certain extent. It is not as quick as the 40d but it does focus better in low light as well as operates much better in low light.
