Its so cool still to hear how good of a soldier he was and how the guys in his company grew to defend him like a brother. My uncle retired from the Army at Ft. Hood and they ended up just staying in Killeen. I remember as a kid in the late 70's visiting there, and you could hear the helicopters, and also the loud repercussions of mortars and tank blasts when they were on maneuvers nearby.

If you want to see the home movies that Eddie took of Elvis during his visits, go to youtube, they are "The Lost Elvis Home Movies. It is narrated by Eddie's children and shows the room Eddie built for Elvis. It's 34 min. Long. I saw this several years ago and then when Jordan did the video I watched it again.

I love how you bring the humanity to even the hugest of stars - you really brought young Elvis to life for me. What a sweet friendship he had with that family in Waco - I looked at their B&B online, and it's really lovely inside. I've been past Waco many times in driving to Austin from Dallas, or going to see family in San Antone; who knew all that interesting Elvis history was there?! Thanks for another wonderful vlog.

  • @pepstalynn

Another story that I've heard about Elvis in relation to Texas is that he stayed at the same hotel in Downtown Fort Worth that JFK stayed at the day before he was killed. They didn't stay at the hotel at the same time but I thought it was really cool especially since I'm from Fort Worth. I think Elvis stayed there because he performed a show or some shows at some venue in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Please consider doing a vlog on Nick Adams, who was a close friend of Elvis. Nick was an Oscar nominated actor, best known for the TV series "The Rebel", but was also known or being exceptionally tight with James Dean and Elvis. There is a fascinating book called "The Rebel and The King" chronicling time Nick spent with Elvis in Memphis and at his Tupelo concert. The story is, Elvis was obsessed with "Rebel Without A Cause," and James Dean. Nick, who had a small role in "Rebel Without A Cause", was very close with James. After Dean's death, Elvis sought out people who knew Dean in Hollywood, which is how he met Nick. Sadly, Nick's career began to slip and he passed prematurely. His death at his rented home in Laurel Canyon is shrouded in mystery. Very interesting story.

My dad retired from the Army just after I was born and didn't say much about it.
I do know that he retired as 101st Green Beret and did 2 tours in Vietnam but he was a very humble man.
But he did tell us that he was one of Elvis's instructors in handgun/weaponry while he was stationed in Ft. Hood.
He was never a big Elvis fan and didn't watch his movies or listen to his music but he was impressed with his attitude and said he liked him as a person.
He said that Elvis fans would line the gates onto the base and such and that he actually would get a little irritated with it while they were working but was always polite to them (the fans) when off duty.
Sadly my dad has past away and I find questions I wish I had asked while he was still here.

@GunsAndPoker That figure comes from a book called "Like Any Other Soldier" by Jerry Osborne. I haven't read anyone actually verify that figure. Since the story about who they actually rented it from was not correct, this may also be the case about the rent. Home sold for just $170k during the height of the market in 2006. This may not mean much.

    • @johnfd0210
      @johnfd0210 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@GunsAndPoker My thought also. I have a feeling whoever wrote that information (as posted in the folllowing comment) added one too many zeros. There is no way a service man in the 1950's could have afforded 1,500.00 in rent. Typical pay for a US soldier in 1955 was 200.00 per month.

That place was a total ghetto in the early 90's when I was stationed there. Alot of people referred to Hood as the place where careers went to die. They were supposedly putting in new barracks buildings, but the majority of us lived in open bay sweat box's. I never got to see the Elvis spots, but I did see Luby's after it got shot up.

My dad was in the same Armored Division and was in an armored infantry heavy weapons company. He was in charge of a mortar platoon and was stationed in Bad Nauheimm, Germany. Even though Elvis was in a tank unit and my dad was in an armored infantry unit in the same division they would see each other on base and knew each other on a first name basis (They weren't good friends, but they knew each other). My dad told me that when Elvis got to Germany, his company was ordered to form a perimeter around the train station when Elvis first arrived because the German girls were trying to "swarm him", which is why my dad's army had to cordon off the train station.
In deed, Elvis was a normal GI. My dad told me that he was as nice as one can be, and that he never requested special treatment. The only time he tried to "do something special" was when they were ordered to cut some tall grass with "yo-yos" (basically a blade on the end of a stick, but not a sickle). Elvis went to the PX and bought one of those mid 20th century lawn mowers. The NCO in charge of the detail told Elvis, "No, Private Presley, you're not going to be able to use a lawn mower. You're going to cut the grass by hand like every other soldier". My dad said that Elvis said, "Yes, sergeant, no problem. If you like I'll donate this to the U.S. Army, you can have it, or I'll return it after this detail is finished". Elvis then picked up a "yo-yo" and cut the grass by hand just like everyone else.
Additionally, due to his record contract he couldn't play in the Enlisted or NCO clubs. So, he would invite guys from the tank and armored infantry units to his barrack and play the guitar and sing for the guys. Other than that, my dad said Elvis was truly "one of the guys" just like everyone else, as you said. So, I can confirm your story via a first hand, contemporary live witness testimony.
The only thing that required "special treatment" was anytime he went to a place like the train station (where the public would see him and he wasn't going "incognito" to a personal residence like he did when he began dating Priscilla) which is when they dispatched a Company to cordon off the area to prevent the public from harassing Elvis for autographs, pictures, etc., which obviously wasn't Elvis's fault.

Thank you, Jordan for doing this vlog . Had no idea ELVIS spent special time in Waco. Enjoyed seeing the house he stayed in and places he liked to eat. He was such a special person. My sister lives in Waco. Never knew all those great places were there. Never got to see anything of Waco outside of her neighborhood. I have a special place in my heart for Waco because of my sister. She and her husband and kids all went to Baylor. I like the ELVIS house.

Great content, I love the channel. I've been binge watching all your old stuff. Completely off topic, If you make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, the lynryd skynyrd crash site is only a couple hours away. They recently put up some memorial stuff.
