"How about you, Jimmy? Are you an oak man?"
"Oak's nice."
Winston Wolf would approve.
“You callin’ the Wolf?!!! Shit…. That’s all you needed to say…” hahahahahahaha!!! Yes!!!
Something I noticed, it's funny how different guitars inspire you to play differently. being as this is a unique guitar it makes sense that it would make you play it in a unique way. this is definitely a unique guitar something a person doesn't see everyday.
Oak is one of the heaviest woods!! That's why they used a light wood like Korina for the rest of the guitar. Makes total sense. Love that thing..
Maple is generally heavier😀
It is cool, but it looks like 1980s kitchen cabinet doors.
😂😂😂 damn, now you've said it, I can't unsee it 😂😂😂
So, not that cool...
@@martin-1965 good old Golden Oak stain by Minwax
Beautiful?
To me that instantly makes it even cooler.
The bridge pickup has a real nice squawk to it. I'm not one to put a whole lot of stock into tonewoods on electric guitars but, korina is so beautiful and it looks nice with the oak. I would love to see a natural flame maple and korina combination with a maple neck.
“Oak Town” theme, you’re my kinda nerd Austin. That really is a great sounding and looking guitar.
I found a Keith Urban limited production Les Paul clone. It's based on a '59 LP, but it's solid oak, not just the top. It plays Perfectly and weighs about as much as an anvil.
Beautiful oak top
Korina is not a "sacred tone wood", lol. If it were, every guitar maker would be using it. Especially on acoustic guitars, which you never see. Korina is actually difficult to work with and not very desired to work with. Gibson used it back then in the 50's as an alternative to using up their good wood on what were only experimental models at the time. They weren't using it on any existing models. When they finally did reissue those models into regular production, they used traditional mahogany. Remember, those old V's and Explorers are sought after and collectible because of the limited number made, original runs, and the recent fascination many have with 50's guitars in general. Not because of the wood.
I've heard these cheap guitar sellers say "tone wood" doesn't matter meh we all can hear I'm deaf in one ear and can still tell the difference. Like my sg v.s my paul. It's totally darker rips harder lots more sustain.
I always wanted you to demo one of these, except I never knew about this korina version. The last oak top model I saw on Reverb was the mahogany body you showed briefly with a walnut fretboard. Would be interested to hear if the tone would be any different on that model.
Tiger Oak. Had a piano made out of that
Yup. They're really pretty and really interesting builds. Wish Gibson would do more of these crazy combos. Some of the most interesting I've ever seen.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t the tune-a-matic bridge and stop tail piece introduced on the 1954 Les Paul Custom “Black Beauty?” I had one; it had a tune-a-matic and stop tail piece, along with the “staple” and P-90 pickups.
For the custom model - yes. 53/54
Here we are only talking about the “standard” model
A few years ago the maker of Dimebags guitar approached his widow to make a short run of about 200 tribute guitars. They sold for around $900 to $1k but the guitars were all n as rural made from wood from oak trees off the ranch they lived on and his wife ssf till resides on .
Damn that is a BEAUTIFUL guitar ! I love the wood grain , Ive been into ' plain ' looking guitars lately , whether they be natural or a Sahara Taupe type , Desert Sand , or the like...Groovy Baby !...Thanks Trog !
Sometimes I feel like the 'natural' finishes can make the guitar look like a COFFEE TABLE, but the grain pattern on this example actually looks pretty good!
@@StreetPreacherrlol looks like my grandparents cabinets.
That middle position sounded great clean and dirty. Thanks for documenting it!
Wow, I love it! I've only had one guitar with an oak top and that was a 100 year old parlor acoustic. Such a unique piece. And THAT'S the kinda neck I love as well. Big and chunky to fill my hands just right. Guessing the brightness comes from being a hard dense piece for a top. That's subjective, but noticeable. I don't worry about those things as I easily use an amp's settings to compensate for unwanted tones and vice versa. That's as super unique piece you're not gonna find every day. Plenty of plain maple tops look like furniture, too. So what!
It would be cool, but expensive for Gibson to do a 50 states top series, a different top wood (or a veneer) that’s unique to every state.) Maybe do an inlay of the state on the top or the neck. (Yes I’m thinking of the videos Xyla Foxlin did making a US map out of wood from every state). The one state that might be hard is Arizona, as the only wood is Desert Ironwood and that’s a hard dense wood and I don’t think comes in a big enough size for a book-matched top.
Love this idea❤❤❤
This might be in the top 10 of the LP's you've featured on your show.
LOVE the look of that korina back and neck! Be great if they could make it an option on USA production LP's
Fantastic video. Thank you for your in depth dive-in as you explain each aspect and part with a brief history too. Killing it.
Absolutely gorgeous woods on the Oak Korina LP! Some unfamiliar tones from the unusual woods. But then I could just look at it all day and not mind.
With endless videos and studies showing wood plays no role on the tone of electric guitars why do you still believe this?
@@aquatichighs I'll be the first one to support actual science (as opposed to pseudo science). But my experience over 60 years playing, is there is an effect from wood that varies from guitar to guitar.
@@jimmyjames2022 ah you’re old there’s no changing your mind you know everything . The material your pick is made of has more effect on tone.
@@aquatichighs hey you send more some links to actual peer reviewed science studies and ill read them. Otherwise it's your young arrogance against my old stubbornness.
That is very unusual and really beautiful. I happen to love Korina. I owned a reissue Flying V, and Explorer that were stolen along with a Moderne that I was able to recover. I also own an SG and a PRS that are both Korina. That wood is cool, but difficult to work.
Never heard you play like that before, awesome playing and awesome guitar
How can you choose not to keep it? Unique, awesome tone, ultra cool top. It's a winner!
Maybe he can't afford to. I mean, it's a good thing that I could never afford that piece. In a way it's pure torment having this guitar, knowing that you cannot take it with you in the end.
The distorted bridge tones were really chunky. I love that tone.
That’s an awesome top! All around beautiful guitar, love it.
Ill take 2 oak top LPs. The first like this one but with a selected lighweight korina body and neck. Slim SG neck. . LP nummer 2 : same as previous but with a maple neck and board with black dots. Both wit Custombuckers. Love the tone of the oak top🎸👍
It’s Trogly time!
Are the bunblebee capacitors the 50 cent cheapo ones with a bumblebee shrink tube?
Looks great brother, definitely one for the museum!
Lovely looking guitar. Looks like English oak but might be white oak which a U.S oak. Beautiful. Nice episode. Really enjoyed it.
Sounds a tad brighter than the typical Maple Mahogany to my ears.
It is fabulous in its quirkiness. All for Gibson taking chances. Bright tone and surprisingly light. The only knock for me is the oak grain is a huge pattern for such a small field. Great fun !
That just became one of my top instruments from the show!
I often wondered why more oak isnt used in electric guitars. Maybe it isnt that a resonant material? The figuring is called medullary rays. Is the varnish polyurethane?
Is it Live Oak? Wonder where from, Live Oak is very common here in LA. Beautiful gitfiddle!
My grandma is missing her oak table for about 2 years now, mmmmnn? 😂
I saw what you did there in that playing demo. A+
THAT AXE WOULD BE PERFECT IF IT WAS WIRED 58 STYLE MT, THEN PERFECTION.
Hope you are going to keep that for your collection. That is so unique, and it is probably as good as far as condition that you are going to locate. Can't Gibson make a reissue duplicate COA ?
It looks like someone turned my kitchen table into a guitar.
That guitar is absolutely beautiful
Z is for an hour late. I was at the cigar smoker. Great time.
Oak is cool , but the Korina is what really excites me. Did they ever make a Solid 50’s Korina LP or LP Special?
THAT is one gorgeous guitar!
You can't hear a difference? this is the first time I've ever heard a noticeable difference in tone. Honestly wondering if its the wood that makes it so sharp. The highs are very clear on that guitar. Its not for me to be honest, I like a more mellow bassy tone.
What would happen if by chance the strap buttons were not in the usual locations???
You would see an ugly hole or a filled in one lol. 99%of the time though, they are"in their usual places" 😄
I'm a huge fan of the natural wood and I love the oak top LP👍🎸
Natural top guitars look like flooring and cabinets. This particular guitar looks like cheap apartment cabinets.
That is my favorite guitar you have ever shown us in your hands.
I bought a blackstar 2x12 60 delightful amp
A 1959 as far as I know is usually the heaviest of all the last fall's 10 lbs and above but it looks like yours was under 10 lb and I absolutely love the Karina body
Great looking guitar!
Loved the Pokémon theme from the OG Games
Oak and pokemon, lol now i get the joke xD
I'd rather the featured guitar being reviewed to the other oak tops . Something about the lines just seems to reach out and grab you. Plus the guitar sounds great.
Beautiful guitar 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Salutations Austin!
Really exceptional Les Paul!
It looks great and has some great tones as well!
I don’t think I have ever seen an oak topped Les Paul before, and the Korina Back and neck makes it extra special!
Thank for sharing your experience with this instrument and posting this video!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
Honestly, you had me at "oak" :D I'm building an oak topped Deluxe that hopefully turns out looking just half as nice as this thing :D
This would look great on a stand next to my mom's antique oak haunted sideboards.
Its weird but the grain reminds me of a Van Gogh painting..... Very different but very cool.
Good call. Looks like some of his drawings too… Good old Vincent had a variety of pen and pencil strokes.
That R9 Oak is gorgeous
I have an elm guitar , thought I would mention it if we are all getting arboreal
I’d like to see more oak tops. So much grain pattern.
Thats a beauty of a rosewood fretboard. Brazilian rosewood is just a BS status hype. My 2013 Koa Top Standard has the best sustain out of any LP I've owned, bar none.
When Yngwie Malmsteen said Les Pauls are "a piece of furniture", this is the one he was talking about.
That is beautiful.
I guess all Gibsons don’t have the Made in the USA stamp. First time I noticed that.
Custom Shop Gibsons don't get it
As Trogly likes his unusual words, I believe the "flames" in oak are called medullary rays 🙂
I was not expecting a pokemon music demo.
Beautiful
An oak-topped Korina LP? Yes!!
An oak-toppes Korean LP? Yes!!
Joe Perrys bone yard looked similar 😮
Heart of Oak.
Oak! Who knew..cool AF. Looks like my cat.
Oh no! The "1952" model shown has a tune-o-matic bridge and trapeze tailpiece. Is that a conversion or a later model before '57?
Looks like a conversion - that one slipped through the editing process!
Now that's a top with character!
Awesome Guitar 🎸!
love oak but not for guitars.or at least les pauls.
A Gibson Les Paul in Oak. I want one.
Let's go guitar people 🤘
That is a really interesting Les Paul 🎸😃
This guitar is effin Dope.
As my wife called it, it’s a furniture guitar. Looks like someone cut up an entertainment center or coffee table from 1989.
Didn’t a 52 have a different bridge setup and no binding on the neck .
It had a trapeze underwrap tailpiece (different from what was shown. Only the earliest examples lacked binding - most had it
Imagining this as a tobacco burst...but natural is nice too. :)
Killer Rock/Punk tones.
The pokemon demo though
Looks like it was made from the seat of a dining chair, but it's cool.
Boy that Case Lost, is a real devalue factor. Hope you got it for quite a bit less.
Thanks Trogly
Black buffing compound 😂
Odd combo but I love it!
I always thought oak would make a beautiful guitar. Too bad it takes so long to stabilize, and its so heavy.
I'm sorry but this damn thing SCREAMS! I WANT IT!
Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
Is the fretboard divided by 18 or 17.817?
Love it😊
Wood grainey!!
