      Amen to that! I don't normally geek out over Les Paul tops but the second that case opened I let out such a dramatic "woa". Seriously, that's just absurd. It kinda reminds me of this one time in high school I took a half 'eaten' gold butterscotch disc candy out of my mouth and put it under the microscope in science class and it was this fascinating series of golden lines and squiggles that was mesmerizing. This top looks almost exactly like that, like a macro close-up shot of a butterscotch disc. The way that top moves under the light is really something else. What an incredible score, definitely one of the most impressive looking tops I've ever seen on this channel!

    You know in Pulp Fiction when Vincent Vega finds the briefcase in kitchen cabinet of the kids eating Big Kahuna burgers for breakfast? Then he tosses the case on the counter, opens it up and this warm golden glow illuminates his face as he gazes down, seemingly in a trance at what he's just laid his eyes on? Tarantino has never specified just what exactly was in there, but now we finally know. Seriously, what a phenomenal top - that's like winning the lottery.

    Having a guitar that you can't use is something I'll never understand. But I'm not a collector so to each their own. I've always seen guitars as a tool for musicians and like a tool, I can't imagine owning a hammer and be afraid to use it.

    • @r33th
      @r33th ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with you to some extent. However I feel that instruments are a work of art just as much as they are a tool. Some guitars are just so beautiful that they deserve to be well preserved, not necessarily locked up behind glass, but not played to death either. A guitar like this one is irreplaceable, and I applaud his efforts to share them with the world so we can admire it too.

    There was a mint '74 ebony V for sale on Reverb for $15,000.00, and as sweet as it was I thought that price was ridiculous, but I guess it was sold as it's gone now. Pretty sure you paid even more than that for this beauty, but man, collectors just driving the price up for the sake of having it instead of playing it makes no sense to me. Still, that's an incredible find, Austin. Congratulations.

      I thought the 70’s era of Gibson’s were good either. I’d always heard that, for the most part, the 50’s are gold, late 60’s can be hit or miss and the 70’s got worse as they went along. Am I wrong or are people just driving up the prices on the 70’s (and even 80’s) ones because they are (were) more affordable and attainable

    Funny how many people associate George with the rosewood telecaster considering his general dislike of it. Didn't use it very often after the rooftop concert, gave it to Delaney Bramlett.
    George really liked the strat and les paul though, Rocky and Lucy were kept around and used for the rest of his career. It might be neat to see the Gibson Lucy reissue on the show.

    What would be nice is if the amount of attention being given to the your channel eventually lead Gibson to create a combination model, marrying the cosmetics of this particular model with the reissue specifications from models predating when Gibson was part of Norlin. One would get the best of both worlds as a result.

    I can obviously see the beard-like feature, but i don't understand why a Les Paul (a man-guitar) is called a lady? It should be called a Les sportin-a-beard or something. My '08 Les Paul Studio is handsome, it's mechanically awesome, and doesn't ever act-up for no reason, so it's "spirit" is more that of a man. Things that break down at the worst time and for no reason like boats, their spirit is more that of a female! Trogly, i think you might want to re-name the bearded ladies to something else:)

  • @HannahXX
    @HannahXX ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not sure Gibson needed to "win over" George Harrison. He started playing Gibsons in 1962 when he bought a J-160E. From there he played an ES-345, SG Standard, J-200, not to mention the red 1957 Standard he got from Eric Clapton. There are people who have meticulously and obsessively studied and documented the instruments the Beatles used, there's no way this guitar would be unknown if George owned it.

  • @gew2309
    @gew2309 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fender stratocaster came like this in the 1970s. I'm thinking just a few more of these types will show up on the market.
    Maybe 3. At the most .
    Your right about the namm show.
    That's we're they were both sold
    That explains the hang tag.
    And the different case.
    No pop out winder's.
    The dealer at the namm show made up the storyline of G. Harrison. To get top dollar.

    I've owned a natural top 76 custom since 1984 (you can hear it on my videos), so I can understand how much you love this one. Mine has no flame at all, but it always has been beautiful, and I would never consider getting rid of it. I did have Mike Lull (rest in peace!) refret it and plek it in 2019. He also swapped in some 500k pots which opened up the guitar tremendously, increased the output and made it less dark.

    • @allstopblue5717
      @allstopblue5717 ปีที่แล้ว

      It didn’t have 500k pots from the factory? Or is that when they switched to the 300k for a while . I haven’t watched this whole video yet so if Trogly mentioned it I apologize.

    • @kapstersmusic
      @kapstersmusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@allstopblue5717 Nope. 300k (or less haven't checked em on a meter) Mike Lull took one look at it and he said "let me check the pots", and yep they weren't 500k. I guess the pots from that era have been known to be 300k or less, especially from the Nashville factory. He explained how all my signal was dumping to ground. I saved the old pots but would never reinstall them myself. I played the guitar over 30 years with that dark cloud holding it back 🤣

      @@markbaum9615 How about that Travis Bean guitar with the solid steel neck he played for a bit not an Alembic but quite the outlier!

      I'm pretty sure that was once George Harrison's rosewood Tele, if I remember right he gave it to Delaney Bramlett as a gift and Delaney and Bonnie were on the Festival Express tour.

      @@FloyDZeD yeah that makes sense. I wasn't aware that George had given it to Delaney.

      @@markbaum9615 yes and interestingly the first guitar work Doug Irwin did for Jerry was modifying the Alligator Strat. In the output jack cover is a treble boost that became the Alembic Blaster which you can still buy. Another early fan of Irwin's work was Lowell George from Little Feat. He's the one that turned Jerry on to him.

    Rumour is George was not fond of the rosewood tele. He did give it away pretty quickly😮.

      Can't say I wouldn't blame him! 😁 that rosewood Tele was one butt ugly guitar IMHO

    Being a custom furniture Builder I can tell you that natural top has "Quilting" layers to it rather than a "Flame" top. Absolutely beautiful either way. Love it. I like the Yeti myself.

    Sweet LP 20th Flame Top Xtraordinaire, that's an amazing top, well done for both parties making this happen! Seems pretty light weight for a Norlin, not quite at boat anchor level, well row boat maybe.
