Kendra is great. But it’s the contrast between Buffy and Kendra that’s so striking here. Kendra has trained her whole life with the possibility of becoming the slayer, separated from friends and family, in a traditional mold. Buffy is different. She didn’t train her whole life, she wasn’t prepared to be chosen, she resists tradition and even her calling, but she’s close with her mom, has friends, and thinks outside the box, and strives for the normal life of a high schooler. This leads to her struggle but also her strength, both of which are highlighted in these episodes. Spike (who’s killed two slayers in the past but get bested by Buffy early in the season) puts it best in School hard: “A slayer with friends and family. That sure as hell wasn’t in the brochure.” Buffy is not only chosen, she’s unique among slayers.
I've notice this trend in American film. It happened to Drago's son in Creed II as well. If one character devotes their whole life to studying combat like Kendra, they are never as good as an American with natural talent who still makes time for a social life.

Can someone explain this to me because I'm so confused. Didn't she only become the slayer after Buffy died? Why/how was she sent to stay with her watcher and trained from childhood to be the slayer if Buffy only died a few months ago?

The whole surprise second slayer situation does make you wonder whether anyone at the Watchers' Council actually talks to each other.
"Oh, we saw a new slayer got called, so we just kind of assumed your one was dead. That's how it usually works so didn't really think it was worth checking. Sorry about that."
What I think is that the council didn’t want them to know that there were two slayers because they are jerks 😂

Check out Xander and Cordy's body language in episode 8 (in the library when the possessed guy escapes from the cage, and when they're arguing before Willow stops them). Also Cordy in episode 6 when Xander takes off his shirt. It was definitely hinted at :)
Yes, that's it, how he protects her. Also many many times in the previous episodes you see Cordelia looking at Xander when he's a military guy, or Xander look at Cordelia during class, and of course they're arguing too much like when Willow has to separate them in the library.
Re-watch those episodes with their "romance" in mind and you'll see it.
@@qrsx66 This show is fantastic actually at foreshadowing. It's easily overlooked the first time you watch it, and allows for an amazing re-watch of the series because you see so many things you didn't before!
It even goes back to episode 2 of the 2nd season when Cordelia was trying to thank Xander for saving her life.. but Xander just brushes her off all wondering why he can’t get any dates lol
They were originally supposed to kiss in episode 8. But it was leaked somewhere ( I think TV Guide ? ) and it was written out, to take place in episode 10.
Also, Xander hinted at a humiliation fetish earlier, which helps explain his attraction to Cordelia.
Juliet Landau, who plays Dru, is without a doubt in the top-5 of my all-time creepiest vampire list, and that includes Max Shrek's Nosferatu and Bela Lugosi's Count Dracula. Which bring me full circle to my point, because Juliet Landau's father, Martin Landau, won Best Supporting Actor once for portraying Bela Lugosi in the Tim Burton film 'Ed Wood,' starring Johnny Depp. I really think you'd appreciate that movie if you get some time to watch.
She was perfect in this role

@@alleybox If you go back and watch that scene in Dark Age where they're bickering in the library (around 12:19 on the video you made) knowing what happened in this episode they look like they were about to start making out then too. Willow interrupts when she starts yelling at them.

Spike was originally supposed to have been killed off either in this episode or a prior one, but the character became so popular that Joss opted to give him more screen time.

In an interview with James Marsters, Joss didn’t seem please please with this and shoved James up against the wall telling him that he is dead.. which was the network that was pushing to keep Spike around because he was so popular while in Joss’ mind.. Spike was evil and people were not suppose to love him because of that.

@@Nicamon yeah, I have no idea what was going on in the complex mind of his. James Marsters knocked it out of the park carrying the charisma with his character.. maybe Joss made his too well at the time and then didn’t know what to do with him in order to keep him around for seasons to come. I like Spike, but I had a hard time with his character with later seasons.

Xander has protected Cordelia from harm at least three times by that point. From the Frankenquarterback, from the first Eyghon victim in the Library, and now from the Man-o-worms. And he stands up to her, which can count as flirting.
Opposites attract. For Xander & Cordy, they've for the most part grew up together. They've also hinted at it previously as a couple others have said before.
I love the dramatic music played whenever cordelia and Xander kiss.

I'm not the OP but I figured I'd answer: the council has the ability (for the most part) to find potential slayers and train them early so that if/when they become called, they can immediately be a good slayer. After all, super strength isn't enough--strategy and skill matter too. It'd be bad to just wait until a slayer is called and then have to train from nothing. So Kendra was trained from birth (she mentioned her parents giving her to the watchers to raise).
But Buffy was an anomaly. The council missed her existence somehow and she was called as a slayer before she was contacted by them. That's also why she has friends and goes to school and stuff unlike most slayers who work alone--she wasn't raised with the knowledge of being a slayer.

I love drucilla, one of the most interesting characters and honestly I don't think Angel or Anyone can blame her for her animosity towards him even if it isn't based on any kind of human love or feeling for her family. But then......it is possible for vampires to feel familial love so.
I always like to think that it's a very Stockholm thing, but, because vampires are good beings they don't quite have the same aversion to that kind of "love". It's prolly more normal to them then actual love
Perhaps to some extent but it's also she wants to hurt him and knows that bringing that stuff up will do that.
Welcome to what I feel like is the Golden Age of Buffy. This episode for me kicked off an amazing set of episodes and continues all the way through season 3. All of the other seasons are fabulous, but these are just gold.

I’ve seen a LOT of spoilers in this comment section, more than I’ve ever seen on your videos Alley. People are explaining how things work even though if they had only watched up to the episode you are on, they wouldn’t know this. People are also making “cute little hints” and asking questions that contain big spoilers. It makes me so mad!!
Information that is not plot relevant is not spoilers. For an example how it works with potential slayers slayers being called and watchers. It's not a big secret it's just informaiton they haven't bothered giving yet. If she asks in the vid then people will reply.
I mean yes it sort of is a spoiler but "We can't tell you about how the slayer thing works because of spoilers" is a bigger spoiler than just explaining it.

That's the fun thing -- Spike didn't want to kill Buffy, per se, he wanted to restore Drusilla and Buffy was always in his way. But Drusilla is fucking nuts and now she's powerful again. Even SHE doesn't know what she's gonna do next.
oh no - he definitely wanted to kill Buffy as well. He's a slayer slayer - it's what brings him joy. He would have been much better off quietly trying to revive Dru without bringing attention to themselves (remember he literally only found out about the ritual and that he needed Angel to restore her in this two parter, they had come to the hell mouth to use it as a kind of health spa - it was good luck that everything they needed to restore Dru was already there, but there was no need to make their presence felt prior to this if all they wanted was a quiet convalescence). He hunts out Buffy and tries to kill her on three separate occasions where she wasn't actually getting in his way at all (School Hard, Halloween and Lie to Me). He's in it for the rush.
@@charlottegiles2050 He does pride himself in his ability to kill Slayers and he does like fighting them but the reason he takes on the job to kill Buffy is that it makes him the leader of the Sunnydale vampires which allows him the resourced he needs to restore Dru. And no he gets the book about restoring Dru in Lie to me. School hard is him trying to prove himself to the local vamps, Halloween is him ceasing on an opportunity and as is Lie to me. Despite the fact that he beat Buffy in school hard, until joyce axed him in the back, he never seeks another direct confrontation with her again unless he has some advantage.

Also "So what are you gonna do after you kill Buffy just kill the next slayer?" Yeah that's basically his whole MO. Spike is a man of simple needs and tastes. It's honestly kind of refreshing to have a recurring villain who isn't constantly trying to end the world. He's just having fun. I'd say he's here for a good time, not a long time, but... vampire.
@@spookymia8135 No Spike kills any Slayers he comes across but he doesn't actively look for Slayers. Or he'd have fought a lot more then just three of them in this two centuries of life.
@@DaDunge I didn't mean it in the sense of killing slayers being an active goal. I meant that the extent of his ambitions is to kill them. He doesn't want or need to do anything more than that, he's satisfied being the Slayer of Slayers.
But also, I'm sure he HAS actually sought out more to kill than he's actually done, considering that even coming across a slayer was more a function of luck than planning for the majority of his existence. Potentials were all over the world, and you never know who is going to get called, to the point that the Watchers council can't even reliably keep track. Vampires aren't exactly organized aside from their nests, it's not like he had much to go on as far as finding them except rumors. He literally says he killed the New York slayer because he'd been chasing the high of having killed his first. That once he had a taste, all he could think about was killing his next one. That speaks of a mission, albeit one he treats as a hobby more than a priority. Finding the second wasn't happenstance, he found out he was close and went for it. I imagine there WERE slayers he'd gone after other than those two, but he showed up too late to kill them, and the next in line could've been halfway across the globe.

I mean Spike has killed two Slayers before so evidently he doesn't have much more than just liking the thrill of it.
Well it's not like he always hunts the current slayer, but he does enjoy fighting them. But he came to Sunnydale to heal Dru after she got Lynched in Vienna.

I am just thrilled with your reactions to this show. Your articulate and honest reactions are just so precious -- glad to know that folks like you are alive and contributing your talents to make the world a better place. Buffy was created for the people bright enough to see the real difficulties behind growing -- I have always admired how they loved and respected their audience.
You never knew what they would do next - and put in so many jawdropping -- what did I just watch moments! No other show has ever captured me like this one. And you seem to be catching all the feels of it. Can't wait for the next one - whatever it is.

The Watchers council is somehow able to find which girls are in the Slayer line and MAY be called when one dies. Obviously there are a few because a Slayer Could die on their very first outing after being called. So there'd have to be more than one ready to go. The council attempts to gather them and start training them ahead. Buffy was an exception that they weren't able to find her until JUST before she became THE SLAYER. In the movie it was explained that the could be Slayers have a mole that identifies them and Buffy had hers removed because it was a mole. The tv show and movie don't run on the same continuity, so that's not the reason on the show. I assume there's some sort of mystical way they can find the could bes, and somehow Buffy just wasn't found early.

I remember in the audio commentary the writer getting annoyed at the end of the episode because they had another library scene and seemed to be in there too often during the writing and filming of them, but I never noticed when watching if it showed itself as too much library time to any viewers.
The library time didn’t annoy me. Story-wise, it makes more sense than Giles keeping the books at his place, and the kids going to his house.

In that time Writers and Joss Whedon plan to kill Spike but James Marsters aka Spike didn't want to his character die he wanted to play Spike. They changed their mind and they didn't kill Spike. Cordelia-Xander :D I love Oz like you do. 2 slayer was really so great thing how we learned. It was so hyped and shock. I love Angel how he messes with Spike :D And Drusilla had her real power :) Great reaction. Can you make at least 2 reaction episodes if you make 1 episode it won't end forever :)
Yup - you can't put enough emphasis on the relationships between the vampires in this show. While most of the time they're mere slayer-fodder - though the end of Lie to Me is an interesting specific example of the difference Buffy clearly makes between some humans what they become - for this little blood triangle of Angelus, Drusilla and Spike, it's all very complicated and extremely personal. This episode especially highlights how much of a monster Angel was before that pesky gypsy curse turned him into the mopping love-struck moppet we see today. Dru may be barking mad, but she still knows who her Daddy was, and how he turned her into what she is. This is pretty dark stuff.
As for the Kendra stuff - well, who knows how it works? Least of all Joss Whedon, it seems.
I must be the only person that thought Kendra was lying about being a slayer. Maybe I just intrinsically dont trust people. lol

This show will always raise more questions, some may get answered, others never. I like how the music goes so over-the-top when Xander and Cordelia kiss, so extra.
I don't understand the timeline of Spike & Drusilla, if they were in Prague recently (as another poster said) then when was Spike in Sunnydale previously? At the beginning of ep. 2x03 he said, "Home sweet home," so he's been there before, When, before Prague?
Spike is like a hundred years old. He didn't spend all that time in Prague. Besides the hellmouth is generally considered the source of demons. So it is effectively home to all demons regardless of if they've ever actually been there before.
I think he was saying it as in he was making it his new home - not that he had been there before. He was staking his territory. He has plenty of time to have been there before, he didn't go form England to Prague and then just hang there for two hundred years - from the conversations Spike and Dru have its clear they travel around a lot (Prague, China and Paris - plus they both come from England originally) so its not impossible they could have been to Sunnydale before, but I've never read that line as anything other than Spike arriving at his new home and staking his claim.

Buffy is the slacker Slayer. Not sure if the story arc was laid out from the start or if Whedon improvised consequences from previous plot events i.e Buffy's death. It is great to see characters not staying in their tramlines and being allowed to evolve and be stupid and heroic at the same time. The Buffyverse is largely responsible for better characterisation in long running series.

You're not sure if a continually bickering pair of characters can make a go if it a love interest? That's a good question - every screwball comedy from Bringing Up Baby through to Moonlighting and beyond suggests not. We'll have to see.
Alley - just a quick word to say THANKYOU - writing the above comment, inspired by your youtube reaction, has caused me to watch the S3 episode 'Atomic Shakespeare' episode of Moonlighting from 1988 - a Shakespearean inspired episode of a contemporary 80's detective comedy/drama even sillier than The Princess Bride - complete with faithful bits of Will S. mixed in with references to The Honeymooners and unexplained ninjas. This is epic - I mean - Bruce Willis's horse has a BMW logo on it's saddle and is wearing shades. I've not seen this in thirty years THANK YOU!

Bringing Up Baby, Rear Window, To Catch A Thief, and The Philadelphia Story (and its remake, High Society) suggest that bickering couples can make a go of it. Also: “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie” and “I Love Lucy” (and countless other shows and films).

As gay as that scene is (and it is very gay) it is not NEARLY as gay that one dance scene in bad girls. Like we all know Faith was into Buffy right? No straight girl would have picked up on Willow and Tara THAT fast.

I don’t think you should mention Angel as that implies that Angel goes off on his own and I know it doesn’t seem like much but when I first watched it I was told of the spin-off and then I began awaiting Angel’s departure and it took the surprise out of it. She will be told about it when it’s time but right now it isn’t. And she most likely will react to them. I don’t mean this with any malice whatsoever, just for Alley’s sake, please delete this comment x

Kendra is actually how MOST Slayers are MEANT to be. Traditionally when a girl is called as a Slayer...they are taken away from friends and family and their watcher is their only guide...their mentor. that is kind of the problem with some Slayers...they are too black and white...they don't see grey areas like "a vampire with a soul", it's not in their nature. Buffy is the exception to this...Giles realised her situation was going to be difficult so he let her have certain things most Slayers don't: friends, school, family...and of course kendra rightfully asks "why?" because that is not the way it is done...for Kendra seeing a Slayer doing this is like seeing a cat trying to swim...she's like "wtf are you doing?"
I don't think Xander and Cordela is that strange, Cordelia Willow and Xander has obviously been in the same schools for a long time, and it seems they more then any others seems to have been together, just Willow and Xander have always been friends, and Cordelia has always been a rich kid popular kid prep girl, who has treated them badly because Willow is a nerd and Xander is poor. But on the other hand Willow and Xander has not exactly been nice to Cordelia either. Their making fun of her might easily have been feeding the low self esteem issues we see feeding into her desire to be popular in the first place.
I think Cordelia may have secretly crushing on Xander for a long time. It would explain how quickly she turns to hate Buffy when Buffy is allowed into the Willow and Xander friend group, she's jealous. She also quikcly gravitates towards Xander as soon as she enters that friend group.

Is that what her accent is supposed to be? I always thought she was going for Jamaican, and neither she or the director had ever heard a Jamaican person talk before.
I'd recommend watching the Buffy movie, it answers a lot of your questions about Buffy's backstory regarding Slayerhood etc along with what happened at her old school etc.
Eh, its of dubious value in that regard. In fact, it'll be more confusing than anything else, since a lot of the backstory that it sets up for slayers and watchers is completely contradicted by the series itself.
