    An underrated episode, but as a child of divorced parents, this episode hits particularly close to home. And great analysis of the cinematography. You’re spot on! I have studied filmmaking and have never caught that. Also, John Ritter is amazing. He was playing against type here and really showcased his versatility as an actor. So sad he died so young.

  • @raspar6
    @raspar6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    The way they shoot this episode really drives home the terror of it. Although we know that Buffy could easily best almost anyone in a fight, this episode shows that it's rarely that simple. Buffy is trapped, not by her lack of strength, but by the social systems surrounding her (her mother, her friends, and the police). Within that system, she is left with almost no options.

  • @fad23
    @fad23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +105

    Others are mentioning John Ritter, and I think it's worth bringing up. He was one of the much beloved stars of one of the biggest shows of the 70s, Three's Company.
    Seeing him used here in such a monstrous role might be a shock, but I see it as a testament to his skill as an actor. This was such a different face than we usually saw on him.

    • @willsofer3679
      @willsofer3679 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Fully agreed.
      I’ve seen this episode a handful of times, and a few reactions. And his performance still creeps me out. Which is the hallmark of a good actor, especially one who was known for being the “ideal guy”. Which come to think of it, is probably exactly why they cast him for such a role.

    I swear I'm gonna hear cat bells everytime Angel's onscreen when I rewatch the series for the rest of my life
    I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves this episode, I think it gets an unfair rep! The portrayal of abuse and gaslighting, and how isolating it feels, is terrifying. And there are some moments that I think are sooooo revealing about our characters, such as Buffy still feeling guilt and being completely honest about what happened with Ted, even when she could easily lie or try to hide it. A small character moment I really like is that when Xander finds the most likely traumatizing sight of Ted's previous wives, he states what it is and quickly conceals it. Maybe a little chauvinistic in the sense of feeling the need to 'protect' Willow and Cordelia, but I think its striking nonetheless.
    Also love Giles and Jenny in this episode, it gives it some much needed lightness, levity and compassion!
    So happy to see you fully falling into total Buffy fandom: for a show about vampires and monsters, its one of the most human ones out there.
    As someone who *almost* minored in film, so clearly a *total* expert, I also think you're spot on about the camerawork in that Buffy-Joyce scene.

      To be fair, Buffy is pretty... Pretty. Throughout all of season 1, and 2. I forgot how much they played on sex appeal early on the series, until watching reactions.
      Quintessential Buffy was always season 5-7, at least as far as how I actually remembered her looking.

    • @raspar6
      @raspar6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think they shot it in a way to highlight her youth, etc. Like all of the shots between her and Ted make her look tiny, to showcase how little power she really has in the situation. She had so few options, and even the one she chose was fraught with consequence, and she's only like 16.

    Loved the reaction. This episode really makes you feel a certain type of way because a lot of people have dealt with step parents. Also the way Buffy was dressed in the overalls almost gave her a childish look and vibe. It’s was like she was like a child dealing with an abuser of a “parent” it really hits home

    Great reaction! I think besides being way too real this real underscored what a good and sensitive person Buffy is. She had every legitimate reason to hate Ted, but when she thinks she's killed an actual human being, even a horrible one, even she was acting in self defence and had no intention of killing him... she's still poleaxed with guilt. That girl has serious heart.
    Also regarding Xander and Cordelia I'm not sure I'd call them 'friends' exactly, so maybe 'frenemies with benefits'?

  • @jb888888888
    @jb888888888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing you probably can't pick up on due to the passage of time: John Ritter as Ted was borderline stunt casting. He was (I think) the most famous person to have a part on _Buffy,_ certainly the most famous person up to that point. [Famous before being on _Buffy_ and also not as a result of being on _Buffy_ that is.] He was well known for playing "nice guy" roles such as Jack Tripper on _Three's Company_ and Reverend Matthew Fordwick on _The Waltons._ His appearance as Ted, before he reveals himself as a creep to Buffy, was the exact type of character he always played. Even him cooking referenced _Three's Company_ where Jack is studying to be a chef. Ted turning out to be evil (let alone being an evil robot) was a huge example of Playing Against Type.

    This is one of those episodes that drove home really hard for me as a child. I saw it right after my mom started dating after my parents got divorced. And I was introduced to many "Ted"s around that time. Where my mom could only see them as some perfect awesome guy, and they treated me far differently.
