My first console, that was mine and not the "house game console" was the GBC, atomic purple, so MY nostalgia factor is that console, and make playing all the more sweet. @@bellisperennissturdivant actually yes. I got a hard shelf case from a generic brand and it never leave my bag, I used mostly to emulate GBA, Pico8 and DS stuff, but it never fails me and it’s just absolutely fun to look at!
The 405m with the features you ask for at the end is the device I want! Thank you for this review. Great to see the M and V side by side. About to pull the trigger after seeing Gamma OS. Hopefully a 405P comes before I cave 😂
I just came from the Joey's Handhelds review of this unit - thank the TH-cam algorithm. I did. I think this Anbernic is pretty cool. I like the size, shape, and perceived quality. The performance seems very adequate for what I want to use it for. I have a decent amount of vintage handhelds; but, whatever retro handheld I buy will be my first. I do most of my gaming and all of my emulation on an older Android phone, an LG V35, mated to a GameSir X2 Pro. As a result; I'm very comfortable with Android and would prefer my future handheld to also run the OS. So that's a point to this unit's credit. I'm not a collector. If I buy an expensive toy and it just sits on a shelf then I feel like I've failed myself. As you said at the end of your video, it feels like they're always coming out with new and better devices. So other than the Odin 2, which feels like an end game sort of device, I keep doubting myself as to when I should jump in to the pool. I feel like I'll drop $150 on something and accept that it can't run everything then immediately they'll come out with something at the same price that can and I'll be kicking myself for not waiting. Haha. A great review as always. Thanks, Russ.
Preordered one - all my good memories came from the chunky gameboy dmg and sega saturn, so really it is a personal reference for the design. But hall censor analog sticks come with it is pretty sweet also
You know, I really appreciate how clear and honest your reviews are. You are not one to be like "This system is great, and it's a very cool device" just so you don't upset the manufacturers. I see a lot of TH-camrs state that their opinions are their own, but then their reviews come off as a bit of pandering. While these vertical devices are great nostalgia, I admit, as a 40+ year old who's owned them all, they weren't really all that comfortable. I just dealt with it. For example, the SP was a nice addition, but I would really put my hands through some pain putting all those hours into Final Fantasy Tactics. I owned the RG353VS, and I sold it to a friend because I couldn't play it for more than an hour without getting some sort or fatigue in my hands. Anyway, I appreciate you stating your bias. Thanks and keep those videos coming.
Awesome review mate! I just purchased this device as my first handheld emulator, so the setup guide will be super helpful also! I have big hands so I think the design will suit me fine 😅
After watching a lot of videos about the RG405V, I think your videos convinced me the most to get one lol. And looks like perfect timing too as apparently Gamma OS just released for it.
Thanks Russ. I was weighing on which 4 of these devices to order. After reviewing them all I could not decide between the 405M and the 3+. So I decided to go with the flip instead as it has a more console feel to it and protects the screen when pocketing or placing into a bag. While I heard about issues with cracked hinges, I don’t think I will have that issue with the care I put into my devices.
The Flip is nice, don't get me wrong, but I still don't get the screen protection argument when you can apply a $2 screen protector to the 3+ and it'll protect the screen in your pocket just fine. I put mine in a sock and throw it in my front jeans pocket, never had any cosmetic damage to it.
@@steel5897 good point and yes you can use a screen protector for the RP3+. In my experience I found the flip at a more affordable price than the 3+, and with the larger battery it was a no brainer for me. If the flip was not an option, I probably would have chosen the 3+.
A common argument I see with a lot of these large handhelds is "well I can't take it with me and play everywhere", okay, sure, but as an adult, where are you playing handhelds on the go regularly? We usually have things to do, and if not, we are home. Even my MM+ i don't use all that often OTG, maybe an hour or 2 a week. Also I can't tolerate the vertical handheld slander, the moment I hold a horizontal device my brain screams "This is the device that I need to play the latest/greatest/most powerful". Vertical handhelds are THE way for most handheld systems.
Fair review. I have the 405m and I hate the ergonomics, specifically the dpad on the bottom. It just cramps my thumb. I greatly prefer vertical handhelds, so, I'm personally STOKED to get my hands on the 405v. I'll wait until there's a custom firmware though. Glad to hear Anbernic didn't mess it up.
I just got the grey one gonna load it with a terabyte, I’m so excited. I have a miyoo mini plus and a retroid pocket 3 but this is what I’ve been waiting for
"I'm pretty sure they never actually released Tekken 2 for the NES..." Great deadpan delivery, Russ! Proper laugh-out-loud* stuff😂 (*needs an acronym, that one)
When comparing the Retroid Pocket 3+ to other devices, I think it is always good to note the position of the start and select buttons on the top of the device, instead of on its face where God intended. It won't bother everyone, but the people it does bother, it bothers a lot.
The Start/Select buttons being on top was the deal-breaker for me, when deciding between my RP3 and RG505 (power not-withstanding). I just could not get used to it, and I hated using L3/R3 to do the same thing.
That 405M looks nice, I've never considered it before but if they did an updated one that can handle PS2 a little better, I would jump on it. The V in vertical is a little uncomfortable and thick for me to consider. I do usually like thicker handhelds for comfort but the appeal of this price range is pocketable and portable.
Totally agree. I'm new to this scene so I don't know how often they make new versions, but if they're able to handle PS2 games better, then I'll for sure buy that one. Since I'm in no rush, I'll just wait it out.
I work from home out of a teeny weeny house and my retro game collection usually stays in the store room since I have no room for a tv in the main room. I'm really excited to play old games on this!
I ended up ordering this as a new everyday carry to slot under the steam deck. Something I keep in mind when I look at a handheld is if it’s “purse-able” since nothing bigger than the Miyoo mini are pocketable in women’s pants!
I ordered one when your first video came out. I don’t have a device with that chipset other than the X18. I love my wood grain 351v so Infigured it would be a great addition to my collection.
I was really interested in buying a handheld but we are now pretty much at the end of the T618 lifespan at this point and getting close to quality PS2 emulation, I am going to wait until 2024. I think once we get reliable PS2 emulation we will be able to get that reasonably priced all in one device that will keep a person satisfied for a awhile. Getting a lower priced handheld with a nice factor that can play up to PS2 reliably will pretty much give me everything I am looking for without having to spend 300.00-400.00.
Side by side shoulder buttons are so much better than stacked. I hope someone makes a system with six shoulder buttons one day two side by side and then a trigger on each side under them would be perfect.
Snagged one today for $60 shipped from AliExpress. Went back to buy another an hour later and they were sold out. Also have a retroid pocket 4 pro on the way but I couldn't pass up the deal. If nothing else my daughter will play it.
I really want a Gameboy shaped handheld for the nostalgia factor. The RG353VS's screen is slightly too small for me (for psx games) that's why I ordered the RG405V. Also the stronger chip and battery are very welcome!
He's only been doing this for a few years now, since RG350, so his channel has grown a lot since the Reddit postings when he was helping out the early community.
I'm still waiting for the 405m with the D-pad on top and preferably with video out. Also I keep hoping these companies could get the video out to be a bit higher quality(maybe with basic video toggles) such as aspect ratio
I just can’t wait until these cheaper handhelds the 100-150 price ones can do perfect PS2 and Gamecube emulation. That days coming it’s just not here yet.
Yeah I think I'm that particular person for who the RG405V is a great fit. T618 just doesn't have enough performance for a lot of 16:9 games and I prefer older systems in their orignal aspect ratio usually. I want a device that does up to N64 and DC (would love a bit more juice for better ps2 and ngc as well but alas) with as big of a screen possible, pocketability is not an important factor for me. For a landscape form factor I think x86 is your best bet
Yeah I don't even carry my phone in my pocket these days lol. The case from Anbernic is perfect and can still fit in a small bag. Your reasons are basically the same reason I decided to buy this
This looks like a pretty cool gaming system. I recently emailed them about the new Frore Airjet Pro in hopes they’d use it in a new console they design.
I'd love to see an exclusive android games test on these android devices. Things like: does the device recognize the controls correctly, and the gaming quality.
I really enjoy Russ's videos. He comes across like he is your best friend and telling you out of his own genuine personal experience what is best for you to buy. No other youtuber has his genuine honesty and appeal, Thanks Russ!
Just came across your channel (intro music is stuck in my head... catchy) recently looking to get into the retro handhelds. As you said I'm also looking for that console that you described king for a day. Subscribed and waiting patiently until something comes out that checks all the boxes. It just amazes me how many of these systems are out and they all seem to just miss the mark. Hoping for something good to come out by end of year!
I'm a sucker for vertical handhelds, I tried so much to want to buy the 405M but the 405V being 'thicc' boy drew me to it despite already having a 353V. 😂
I really hope they make a 405p. It's a great looking device, but after buying the 351mp a while back, I barely used it because of the weight! Metal might be cool, but plastic is so much better for portability! And the vertical design is just too bulky for me.
I counted the days between the release of the 405M and the 405V. It's 160 days. The RG405P would likely be released February next year if it's released in the next 160 days.
@@KWPZ21 That is some really unnecessary time investment.. and to be honest, i don't mind waiting even longer if we get a Linux based 405p. Similar to windows handhelds, I think Android is bloating the experience, but unlike Windows, Android doesn't really offer enticing value for that bloat
@@Master_Tamma I want it to be dual boot at least. I don't want a pure Android device. Android have some bloat but it also has some roguelike/roguelite PC ports that have been ported to it especially the GTA games and Bully. I don't need to wait for it to be ported natively to Linux.
What I would love is a portable handheld that will play Def Jam: Fight for NY and Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition flawlessly. Every other game that it can play would be a cherry on top.
Just bought one. So excited. Aslong as I can still manipulate this thing and keep the best of what is on here and toss off the crap then im happy. I recently did up the ps1 classic and thats fantastic, just a pity for the lack of power but this thing is gorgeous. As long as there's flexibility im hapoy5. Csnt wait to be a mobile nerd. Dreams do come true
Russ crushed it again! He even brought up the 3d printed stacked shoulder buttons for the RG405m!!!! Why is he so intune with what were concerned about or interested in?
I hope Anbernic are paying attention to Russ' king for a day idea for a device, an RG405P would be great and the perfect way for them to close out the T618 era, assuming they didn't find another variant to produce before we see a faster SoC. Whether it was strictly a plastic version of the RG405M with dpad and trigger improvements or a more direct update to the underrated RG353P's design, either would be a welcome addition to their range.
Compared to the rg353v it doesn't really look that great.. seems like more simplified somehow. Liking the vertical form factor i went for the less powerful 353v rather then the 405m, which yes looks great but it lacks that nostalgia feel that vertical handhelds can provide. Sadly the design of the 405v is a big miss in my view :/
Good review! I already have the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus and I'm happy with it. I'm sure the RG405V will have its fans. There is always that "wait and see" approach, though. I'm curious what Anbernic will be coming up with in 2024.
@@livinlicious$50 R35S, instead of $60 Miyoo (worse screen, delicate, ). If you know other with Miyoo that you might multiplayer with, would be the exception. Or want to pay more for a different device with wifi or HDMI out. Miyoo is flash over substance, not the budget king. Also the switch? I'd dust off my DS or get a 3DS, first. Play Switch on Steam Deck. Only reason to get an actual switch is if you refuse to pirate, so you own it and the games just to be legal, but still emulate it on other hardware for better play. People looking at this aren't satisfied emulating on their phone, don't want to carry a pc, steam deck and possibly not even a switch. Maybe they can't afford any of that or can't afford to pull out and risk a $200 device on the go. Sure you said Miyoo, but that device is risky and might have to buy multiple to get a functioning one or if bust the one you got. Of course all these budget devices are risky in terms of QC, support, compared to stuff locally available. If you don't care about (can't afford) switch games, don't want saves held hostage, then that's another reason some look at these cheaper handhelds. What I'm saying is the people in this market either can't afford or have other priorities not covered by what you consider the essential line up.
@@livinlicious For the 60 bucks I'd rather buy a used 3DS. It will likely be all sorts of gunked up by age, but it's still better than objectively hostile Chineshit handheld design.
TH-cam tuned me into your channel. I'm hoping you'll notice my question be able to answer it due to all your experience. I have noticed that not too many of these retro mini console handhelds focus on playing any of the old Xbox or Xbox 360 ROMS. Basically what I'm asking in your opinion is which of these current vertical game boy style handles would you recommend playing Xbox and Xbox 360 ROMs on the go?
You had me at Daijisho & Google Play To, this is essential for getting ROMs to work To be honest; the wood finish threw me, at first, but I'm kinda diggin' it
With such a big chungus handheld it almost seems like they should have put analog triggers into it. I do see the appeal of it, I was just hoping for something similar in size to the 353v.
I have a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus (not fully set up, I hate Android), an RG351P (good, but not the best for the GB, GBC and arcade games I’d like to play on it), a couple of RG351VS (awful, uncomfortable, fingers touching, the grey is dull the black clear shell looks amazing). However, the RG353PS is amazing, well priced and really comfortable, works as a TV console and a portable one. I completed childhood arcade games I never thought I cared about. Also, the RG 280V is a delight and a truly portable small wonder of joy. On paper, I’d choose the Retroid. In real life, having the 353PS and 280V makes me realise that I could also just hack a Vita and a 2DS XL to play PSP and DS/3DS.
I love this so much, the GameBoy style is amazing. I think my favorite so far is the rg353p for the snes controller style, if it had this type of power I would get it immediately. I love the vertical handheld though, I don't want to get an emulator device and feel like I'm just playing on another switch/switch lite. Definitely going to get the rg405v, just need to figure out which color! Thank you for the great video!
Not sure about this one, but I have the 505 and was least impressed with it. It may come down to what games it comes with but it's hard to find videos on that, much less game listings. It's also a little on the heavy side.
I might actually grab this device. I have an Odin Lite so I'm not concerned with another device that can play PS2/GC. I have been wanting a vertical handheld just for N64 and older... mainly an 8 and 16bit dedicated vertical handheld.
Ergonomics is often my main concern. I want something to convince me to move off my S21+, because that, with gamepad, is great for GBA and NDS. Which are the two systems I care about. My phone integer scales 3:2 at ~4.5inches, I am interested in the KT-R1, but I'd be paying for a slim form factor, compared to phone+gamepad, but a screen that displays more or less identical to my phone for GBA. I'm definitely still considering this though, even if I think I'll either go really cheap for a MM+ or RG35xx for portability and just save $ for a steam deck to get a big and comfortable super emulator capable of playing my PC games. This seems to be the vertical form factor option for those of us with ergonomic concerns, at least for now.
I was hoping for this device to run Gamecube and maybe ps2 decently. All I want is the 353v but more powerful. Hopefully something with more power in this form factor will come out in the near future.
well its quite a big upgrade over the 353v, but you definitely wanna keep waiting for good ps2 performance, the t618 chips are okay at like 1/3 of ps2 at best and it involves alot of tinkering. It's not that great imo
Just a note on Dolphin - I keep hearing about how the "Official" Dolphin is caught up to the various MMJ variations for lower end systems. It's not. RP3+ still chugs on most games, and has other issues, MMJR is still the best overall, but some variations of MMJR2 or Dolphin for Handheld are better for particular games. The funny part is Aether Sx2 is BETTER than Dolphin for simplicity and straightfoward emulation, despite Dolphin being literally years and years ahead
Yes, MMJR is still an excellent emulator and I always install it with official Dolphin (which I use with VBI Skip on) and then figure out which games play best on each. But MMJR2 is too hacky for my likes, which is what they preloaded here.
We shouldn't have words like "bedgaming" in the English language. Other than that, great vid as always. Looking in depth at some of those shortcomings helps me live with my less amazing RG35XX
I wonder why it seems to go for around $180 on amazon? Automaticly includes the extra sd card maybe? Definitely seems cheaper directly from anbernic. About how long is the shipping from china? Are there other os firmwares available like with the rg351v?
Id love something like this to do the entire Nintendo 64 library. It seems like a lot of work though to get a new front end and organizing and getting Roms.
Finally got my Wood Grain 405V! This thing is beautiful, don't know why so many say it's ugly. My 405V also arrived fully charged at 100%, never had that happen before. I just installed my 1TB micro sd after loading it with roms, TV shows and movie files. Since battery life is great on this unit, I still have the plan to also make my Wood Grain 405V the ultimate portable video media player and TV set. I have some ideas to add even more memory via usb-c flash memory drive or usb-c micro sd card reader. I will add even more TV shows to the external usb-c drive (I have more TV shows I wanted to load on my 1TB micro sd card but ran out of space). I'll have VLC Player and KOFI Media Center add downloaded to my 405V to run my media files! * I also purchased some extra glass screen protectors for both my 405V and my 505 from Amazon.

Loads of people have issues with the 405m. Shoulder buttons stop working and the screen comes unglued. I'd skip that one.
Vertical handhelds are 🔥
I just came from the Joey's Handhelds review of this unit - thank the TH-cam algorithm.
I have big hands so I think the design will suit me fine 😅
cant wait to get home and watch thisss 💛
After watching a lot of videos about the RG405V, I think your videos convinced me the most to get one lol. And looks like perfect timing too as apparently Gamma OS just released for it.
The lack of HDMI-out is a serious downer for me. If not for that missing functionality, I'd say this unit looks almost perfect to me.
Thanks mate ! I was on the fence of getting this one but now I can make an informed decision 😮
Those 3d printed button mods to give stacked buttons to the 405m is kinda cool.
They are I've been using them for a few weeks
@@AishRioswhere can one get them? 😅 without having a 3d printer at home lol
@@kidcurreeI believe there are services for this kinda stuff. Give them a blueprint file, they'll print it for you.
Ayn Odin pro for the win.
The Xbox controller has the dpad on the bottom and is so comfortable
@@HonkeyKong54 Sure but the ergonomics are totally different from a handheld.
@@carld253 yes I wish these handhelds were better for that
If you use a grip with a horizontal handheld the dpad will feel better. Controller thickness helps with ergonomics.
I just got the grey one gonna load it with a terabyte, I’m so excited. I have a miyoo mini plus and a retroid pocket 3 but this is what I’ve been waiting for
This model is the best - I just received it today
This is my favorite channel for hand held gaming devices.
"I'm pretty sure they never actually released Tekken 2 for the NES..."
Great deadpan delivery, Russ!
Proper laugh-out-loud* stuff😂
(*needs an acronym, that one)
I freaking love your intro music. It has such a 90's, early 2000's electronic, video gamey, Daft Punk vibe.
Mine finally shipped 🎉🎉
It's got that whole "portable dreamcast" look to it. It's so huge. I want to play it, but it's just so massive. It's the Chungus of handhelds.
I just could not get used to it, and I hated using L3/R3 to do the same thing.
ty for this, that would be a huge deal breaker for me
While I really like my rp3+, some of the button placements are very curious at best.
You walk around with you handheld in your pocket 😀
Totally agree. I'm new to this scene so I don't know how often they make new versions, but if they're able to handle PS2 games better, then I'll for sure buy that one. Since I'm in no rush, I'll just wait it out.
I agree. I prefer having nice thick ones to hold on to because of how big and full they feel in my a̶s̶s̶ hands.
I finally committed to one of these when I saw one pop up on Mercari and I'm soso stoked :'3
Inreally like this one other then the l1 r1 pressing issues, as always great video really enjoyed it.
The 405v remind me of the portable consoles people were making 15 years ago aha
You should compare the 405v with the 353v the differences, etc.
i honestly dont get why your videos dont get more views and subscribers, the quality of your videos are incredible and i look forward to each one
He is biased and every handheld that doesn't fit in your pocket sucks
He's only been doing this for a few years now, since RG350, so his channel has grown a lot since the Reddit postings when he was helping out the early community.
Waiting on my Wood Grain 405V!
I'm still waiting for the 405m with the D-pad on top and preferably with video out. Also I keep hoping these companies could get the video out to be a bit higher quality(maybe with basic video toggles) such as aspect ratio
You make a good point about them charging extra for the SD card full of games.
I love the form factor... I think im gonna pull the trigger on this one!
The T618 can do a ton of GameCube (*and some PS2) games at native res, plenty run at 1.5x res, too
Yeah I don't even carry my phone in my pocket these days lol. The case from Anbernic is perfect and can still fit in a small bag. Your reasons are basically the same reason I decided to buy this
What sucks is it always comes down to how it feels in my hand. But there is no way to tell without buying one 😮💨
This looks like a pretty cool gaming system. I recently emailed them about the new Frore Airjet Pro in hopes they’d use it in a new console they design.
I'd love to see an exclusive android games test on these android devices. Things like: does the device recognize the controls correctly, and the gaming quality.
i am just waiting for my delivery. ordered the snes color. but it seems like wood or purple were the way to go.
Very informative reviews.. Keep up the good work.. I am torn between between the rg405v, rg502, ayn odin pro..
Did you find sth?
@@Master_Tamma I don't mind waiting because I also have a USB and just ordered a 1TB hard drive to put either Batocera or RetroBat to play on my PC.
@@KWPZ21 I can't be bothered to play anything under ps4 era on my pc, I feel like it's a waste of resources to start that beefy boy for them😂😂
What I would love is a portable handheld that will play Def Jam: Fight for NY and Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition flawlessly. Every other game that it can play would be a cherry on top.
You are king Russ... you are king.
The Dreamcast port of Soulcalibur 6 was so good
damn i just ordered the 353v I didnt even know this was out...
I think I want to grab this CHONKY BOY. Great vid as always, brotha!
I'm curious what Anbernic will be coming up with in 2024.
probably more random plastic china crap. thats what these devices have become.
stick to the steam deck, switch, pc, maybe a 60bucks miyoo, thats it.
@@livinlicious Or 280V or 35XX, solid miyoo alternatives
@@livinlicious For the 60 bucks I'd rather buy a used 3DS. It will likely be all sorts of gunked up by age, but it's still better than objectively hostile Chineshit handheld design.
@@gluttonousmaximus9048what is this logic? If i want to play something like ps1/psp game I wouldn't buy a 3DS
The SNES coloured buttons are the thing that was instantly appealing to me.
I'm not sure why he hates the clear purple casing, I personally love it and ordered that one, throwback to the GB colour 😊
I wish you wouldve talked more about the settings on the handheld such as xbox mode & high mode & game mode
I'm getting it for two reasons: I want a vertical device, and it has a much larger battery than the competition.
I got the device and man I got to say this is how a game boy should have been made
You had me at Daijisho & Google Play
To, this is essential for getting ROMs to work
To be honest; the wood finish threw me, at first, but I'm kinda diggin' it
I want an updated RG280v. Something with a stronger processor. I love the way the RG280V looks and its so easy to take anywhere
With such a big chungus handheld it almost seems like they should have put analog triggers into it.
I do see the appeal of it, I was just hoping for something similar in size to the 353v.
I have a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus (not fully set up, I hate Android),
an RG351P (good, but not the best for the GB, GBC and arcade games I’d like to play on it),
a couple of RG351VS (awful, uncomfortable, fingers touching, the grey is dull the black clear shell looks amazing).
Android shts on everything
I love this so much, the GameBoy style is amazing. I think my favorite so far is the rg353p for the snes controller style, if it had this type of power I would get it immediately. I love the vertical handheld though, I don't want to get an emulator device and feel like I'm just playing on another switch/switch lite. Definitely going to get the rg405v, just need to figure out which color! Thank you for the great video!
Get the wood one! It looks the best! Especially with the multi-colored buttons!
I agree! Made the decision and got the wood grain! Can't wait for it to arrive :)
A missed opportunity to make a handheld with bigger dpad and face buttons! Would have looked way better too IMO.
The wood looks way better than the gray imo.
@@RetroGameCorps agree on MMJR2, it never seems to provide any real benefit
Alway THE BEST content, covering all areas of the subject! CONGRATS!!!
By buying direct you pay shipping and import tax.
I like how this one looks, though the bottom corners are so round it does look a little goofy.
I’ve been playing twilight princess on the rg405v and I love it cause the fan cool down allows for longer play.
