Gave my 5-year-old a rg351p a few years ago. My 2-year-old plays with it now. Ambernic has great build quality
I’ve had mine since launch I took a chance not knowing much about emulation and it’s the best money I spent all year i have all the consoles and steam deck and I still use this more often it’s just nice especially with the grip I play alot of rpgs and this thing is sweet . I haven’t had any issues with its build *fingers crossed * but also I’m not rough on my shit . This thing is great for snes and gba . Great re review.
Firstly, I love my RG405M. I played so many games from start to finish on it across multiple systems, from Gameboy to PS2. It's also one of the most aesthetically pleasing devices on the market in my opinion. That being said, these devices are not built to last. And at that price point, to have it break down within a year is unacceptable. The issues I've faced is shoulder buttons being unresponsive (still click) and worsening backlight bleed by the week. Not to mention the plastic buttons scratching against the shell, but that is pretty minor -- pressing buttons in tandem can get them to stick sometimes, though. The battery life has also decreased noticeably. I don't think it will last until the end of this year.
Anbernic support offered to sell me another one at a discounted price, but if it's just going to become a yearly fee to constantly replace it, I'll likely look into something else. The Steam Deck while expensive, seems to be the best choice for now. I would have recommended the RG405M to anyone had it not been for the build quality.
Steam Deck has always been the better choice for emulation if you don’t mind the screen size…As for ergonomics, it also feels better in the hands. As someone who has both, I would take the Steam Deck if I could only keep one.
This is why I bought the RG35xx from Anbernic. I don’t trust these Chinese systems enough to pay more than $80 for one of these.
My main problem with RG405M is the shoulder buttons. They're bad. I don't mind it isn't stacked, but they should have used a better design. Those shoulder buttons have small contact with its micro switch, no wonder sometimes they felt unresponsive.
This is one the of most underrated comments I’ve seen with review videos. It’s making me second think spending more than $100 on any of these Chinese system devices. Just like anyone else, we work hard for our money and for the device not to last more than a year is a major turnoff. Thank you for posting this. It will save folks the headache of dealing with broken goods.
@@brucemichaelgrossman4913how long have u had it and anyy issues youve encountered so far? I see one for 30usd in my country and thinking of gettingbit
Had issues with the triggers recently so I just bought a screwdriver kit just so I can take a look inside. A premium feeling device, with low quality parts inside.
Yep haven't even had mine 6 months and all the shoulder buttons stopped working
Thanks for the tips here and on reddit. Definitely makes setting everything up easier. I just need anbernic to reply to my emails regarding the two missing cases now!
I agree. I play my RG405M from time to time. But I'm leading towards the Retroid Flip cause it has analog triggers which are perfect to play cloud streaming games!
Always good to make a video on something you enjoy a lot. Thanks!
Love my rg405m, had it since launch and its been perfect. Running Gamma 1.5 currently.
I want to pick up one too but I saw many complaints about the shoulder buttons not working well after a few days of use 🤔 how is your unit doing? I'm based in China so in the worst case scenario I can replace it pretty quickly, but nonetheless I hope to be lucky enough to get a perfect unit 😅
@@scaredylamb My r2 isn't the best honestly, but I don't really use it. I bought a launch model and they used to use these small square crappy switches for the l1 r2 l2 r2. Luckly for you they switched back to what they've used on previous devices, a more sturdy bigger round switch is in the current ones :) I'd tell you how they currently come yes get it 100%. A launch model like mine, it can be hit or miss but I only care that my r1 and l1 are perfect because I don't really play systems that use r2 and l2.
@@TeamGun ah thanks for let me know. I'll try to check with the seller about those buttons, if they actually have been updated. I hope so. But for the price point, it's a bit of a shame the company didn't pay a bit more attention on those buttons 😕
Your channel is so underrated. The screen falling off is what pushed me to go for the rp3 plus. The rg405m is a beautiful and pocket-able device which is a shame.
that was 3 months ago, i wonder if they moved improvements to the screen. another commenter here said they upgraded the shoulder microswitches.
Nice! Mine had a problem with the R2 button not clicking anymore. I contacted the seller on Aliexpress and they sent me a new Motherboard.
Uhh we are suppose to repair it ourselves? And what does motherboard have to do with button? Is your issue resolved?
Yes, I had to make the switch myself. But it was really easy, they even sent the torx driver along with the board. The switches are soldered to the board, and as they are very small it would require a lot of skill to resolder. So I asked for a new board and they sent it. @@bendover-bz4bc
Cause the R1 and R2 triggers are connected to the motherboard and you have to replace it along with the buttons. Mine is coming in the next week and I will have to do the same procedure!
@@bendover-bz4bc yeah it ain't hard bro
@@ThePeacePlant it is cringe though.
I love the part of the video where you basically say the devise is tearing itself apart but you still love it and think it's the best there is 😂. Now, seriously, thank you very much for the video, you've been the first one to honestly tell the problems it brings 👏👏👏👏
You said to me everything I wanted to hear. 405V is looking better now.
Mine arrives tomorrow, should be a fun weekend.
Can't wait for mine to come in. I wanted something that looks like a gameboy but the ones out now are a little small for me so the 405v seems perfect
Nice timing Joey as always . I am receiving my 405m today
I wish more Linux handhelds get released.
I've noticed that many handheld gaming TH-camrs, when reviewing devices, often juggle evaluations for multiple devices at once. While it's understandable given the sheer volume of devices they have, it raises questions about the depth and real-world applicability of these reviews. The average viewer is likely seeking a primary device, not an addition to a collection of 250. They're looking for longevity and reliability. Although one of these anbernic devices could have initial performance that might be satisfactory, a quick glance across forums or discord reveals many users reporting issues over time, from failing buttons to screen problems. While it's nice that Anbernic provides replacements, It really should happen in the first place. I own this device, and while all my buttons work so far, I think the shoulder buttons feel very fragile and I suspect the switches used there are really cheap junk.
Hey, I talk about this in the video, but you won't find a single device, from any manufacturer, that won't have problems. This device is exactly the one device people are looking for, and like I said, I use it daily.
That is an issue. Constant usage is not exercised.
yea etaprime probably has drawers filled with emulation handheld...it is overwhelming. lol
Still begging my parents for one 🤣😂🤣
You should get the anbernic 405v if your begging your parents it’s like 20$ cheaper then the 405M the 405v is a vertical meaning it’s like a Gameboy style device
Anything over $10 is expensive for my parents 😑🤣
Bruh can’t you just idk mow lawns like I do 💀💀💀

Great, honest, conversational video 👍🏻
I was interested in this device, but decided to buy a Retroid Pocket Flip instead. However, when I decided that, my main concern was the size of the screen.
mines had zero issues save the user errors i managed when upgrading to the new os. Favorite sff handheld.
i ordered my 405 Sep 8 because of this vid, gets here tmr cant wait!!
Hopefully they already sorted out the screen popping issue on newer batches.👏
I am in total agreement about the RG405M. Instant favorite and will he though to beat
Mine arrived with light bleed. They agreed to replace with new unit once this one gets back to em.
I just bought my rg405m. And going through your video on debloating and setup. Then saw gamma os. Do I do one or other or both? In a certain order? lol new to this. And you have the best channel for it out there!
You can do gamma then my setup video for all the emulators, skipping debloating!
Awesome thanks for giving me back my childhood 😂
That WOW statue in the back is awesome.
I bought one and enjoyed it thoroughly for a month or two. I didn’t play it for a month and now it won’t charge or turn on. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated!
Do you have GammaOS? I get that from time to time ever since installing it. I would get this so frequently that I emailed Support before it ultimately got fixed. I just plug it in and hold the power/volume down (I believe it’s vol down instead of up…can’t fully remember) till it restarts and turns on.
@@MithosDagonOMG IT WORKED . I FKN LOVE YOU DUDE
this was my device of choice for 2023 and its been great, but my R2 button did go out I got a refund and purchased another and to my surprise they fixed the shoulder button issue by upgrading the switches to beefier ones and I haven't had any issue since. I love tinkering with the newer systems to see how good I can get the device to run those titles and believe it or not one of my favorite systems to emulate is the Wii lol trying to get the Wii motes to work properly on the rg405M and I've got it down pretty good also really love playing doom mods on this thing it just runs so smoothly on this device
Thanks for all of the work you’ve done for us on this device! Do you think there will be a revision of this device anytime soon? I’m in the market for one and I really love the whole concept. I really want it for n64, Dreamcast, and possibly GameCube.. Wii maybe? I don’t think the next chipsets will handle the Wii, will it? Thanks for your advice
Thanks! There's been rumors of an RG406, which would have a T820 (RG556 chip). We'll have to see!
Nice review could you possibly review the new retried pocket 2S thank you!
The champ is here! Long live the 405m!
nice review and love your Joker t-shirt
Well done vid, i would buy this but i bought the rg505 for the oled screen and perfect psp scaling as an added bonus since it's 16x9 and with gamma os it's awesome!
The people getting it for $15 through Temu are extremely lucky.
Wait what?! This is only $15 on temu?!!
Super hard deal to get for US only. Bunch of people in the Discord share when they get it.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds I'm in the US only lol that's nuts and a total steal wow
How do you feel about the long term quality? I have heard a lot of issues with shoulder buttons just dying
Seems to be the main complaint, I'm not sure, my replacement is still going strong. But I did need a replacement, so..
Hi Joey! Love this device! Do you have any discount coupons? Thanks!
Hey! No I don't sorry, check around aliexpress, anbernics site or their eBay store and see what price is the best.
Just bought one the other day and I’m excited to get this.
I'm searching a 4:3 aspect ratio, and I landed of RG405M because is the "biggest" 4:3 display. I already have a miyoo Mini + that is only 3.5 inches. Do you suggest the upgrade for playing the same games (GBA, Arcade) in a bigger display? or do you think is not "big enough" to worth the upgrade?
Thank you Joy. I love your videos!
Not sure it'd be super worth it for just GBA and Arcade, mostly for other systems you'd want to play, N64, PS1, Dreamcast etc.
@JoeysRetroHandhelds thank u mate.. my point was to know that. Because my only concern is about screen size. I'm an old man that loves very old systems (c64, Atari lynx, gba, arcade..) and the 4:3 is the main feature I'm looking for. But I would like a bigger display that Miyoo Mini+ without landing in a second solution that I already have with a Raspberry Pi4 + a 4:3 lcd 10 inches that is totally not portable at all.
Hi joey do you recommend this or the retroid pocket 3? thanks
Only issues I’ve had is my L1 trigger barely works half the time And haven’t been able to get Key Mapping to work on any Android games. Other than that I love the device
It's so easy to pop open and check the triggers and rubber is in place properly.
I just got a 405m and flashed gammaOS on it. I'm having trouble with trying to figure it all out and tweaking the settings. Do you have guide for setting up gammaOS or know where I can find information?
My 405M Setup guide still applies.
Can i netplay on it against RP3+ or Miyoo?
And can i somehow connect it to external monitor (i have xreal air glasses), thank you in advance
I find myself always placing this comment as of late but on temu, the 405 and 505 never go for their asking price. They offer a bunch of discounts. I have two 505's, one i paid $95 for and another $105 but I generally tell people $100 each. I could have bought the 405 for around $120 both times as well. free shipping. not trying to sell the products but i just don't think they should be compared with the retroid.
I kept mine, but I still think the RP3+ is better. My RG405M has this weird this where touching one part of the screen looks like I am poking atleast another part of the screen (maybe this means it is about to fall out…), the picture quality is no where near as good and I get random issues with it not turning on (which I have been able to fix by doing a restart).
I love the feel and design, but it is definitely not my daily driver for retro emulation. The RP3+ has been the better one for me. So that one is still King to me…until the pocket air comes out then I might switch to that.
Need this, the size, power, and aspect ratio makes this like perfect. Probably going to wait a few months to a year cuz I'm not trying to spend any money at the moment and I already have a 2DSXL which can play old school stuff/handheld and my PC if I need something more powerful. Also possibly by that time there might be something more powerful at this same price point.
I had this but I got a pow kitty x28 for like 85 bucks on sale. The x28 is pretty damn decent.
When talking about the handheld, show more gameplay, makes the video more enjoyable instead of watching you talk. We want to see exactly what you are talking about and be immersed into it.
Fair comment, will look at it. This was meant to be a more conversational video given I have double digits in videos showing this device, so kind of setup that way on purpose.
Shes right but non wrong with seeing you have happy holidays all
Is there any guide I can use to make the game folders a little bit more organized ? I still find it hard to sync the folders to their designated emulators , plus I missing a lot of thumbnails for games . Anything will help
Sounds like you're using the anbernic rom sd card and their launcher? No clue, I don't support those. Otherwise with Daijisho, and any other emulator, your folder structure can be whatever you want and has no difference for thumbnails.
I have a quick question about the rg405m. Would you recommend this over the Retroid pocket 3 plus because I’m trying to figure out which one to get.thanks
I have a video reviewing the metal RP3+, should check that out to answer.
Ok thank you
How long would the shipping take ?
Usually about two weeks to North America.
Thanks so much recommending your channel to friends!
how does it compare to the 505..im buying one and don't know witch one to get..?? Please help
Was hoping to get PS2, GameCube & flawless Dreamcast gaming on the go - mostly because my hacked Vita plays PSone & below perfectly (plus PSP).
Guess I’ll save my money, though this still sounds like a really nice handheld.
Might want to look at the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro!
I destroyed my screen too, trying to unglue it again, after I messed up backlight panel, while gluing display the first time. And one thing I must add. Defauld, and gamma os android are both very clunky versions, poorly optimized to 405 screen. I'm talking about notifications, mostly. They don't fit the screen and annoying. But you don't see them 99% of the time.
How about racing games in PSP & PS2 platforms, is it playable?
I had the 400Mhz problem with the Steam-Deck and did not need to RMA. Just to reformat and download Steam-OS. I have the feeling not even Valve knows what's the bug since they don't repair it and only send another Steam Deck if you RMA it.
Lucky on that one, seems not everyone has that same experience and required RMA's unfortunately.
Hmm I was totally gonna buy this device but hearing about the screen and button problems I might just go for the retroid pocket 2s instead.
Mines comes in tomorrow or Tuesday....i already have two others. I have the xxh and the vs. the xxh is a dream for dc.
I just bought one but returned it because it felt too heavy to me. If it was plastic it would be perfect. I bought the grey one and it was beautiful but next time id probably stick with black. Its just a calmer color to me 😅. Hopefully the 406 is real !
do i really need gamma os ? how is the performance on the standart os ?
Great device, but it's heavy vs the competition. This hurts an otherwise very comfortable device. A plastic version with Gamma would be the ultimate device!
I just wanna know if it has the 3ds and ds Pokémon games pre downloaded
What would you recommend for PS2 games around the same price as the RG405M?
Isn't anything until the Odin2 unfortunately.
Are you able to use cheat codes on this device? like for the gba and ps2? i ordered mine today
Don't glue screen back on; I recommend using the double sided tape that they use on phones.
which cheap or mid-range handheld can do the biggest 4:3 screen? thanks a lot? (maybe its a 16:9 aspect ratio console?rg552?)thanks lot!! (basically i wiil use maximum dreamcast)
To run Dreamcast well, you'd want a Retroid Pocket Flip or Retroid Pocket 3+. 16:9 screens, but biggest and most powerful.
Can you replace them thumbsticks?
I bought flip and 405m. I plan to sell flip and keep 405m
If only they made a version with D-Pad on top.
Strange that *Anbernic* changed their typical design.
Yes, I know the original *RG350* was asymetrical like this but since then they have been D-Pad aligned to the face buttons.
You can look into the RG505, it's got the dpad on top and joy sticks on bottom and same basic system just a few minor differences
If only the KTR1 was as readily available as the RG405M, it would've had a very close competition.
I guess we'll see! Mine is on the way.
Quality is a concern with the kt
@@Drivenby⬆️
Only reason I disagree on this being the best "pocketable" handheld, is because my Switch Lite fits in my trouser pocket and can play much more.
(Even moreso when I finally mod it).
But I do like the Ambernic RG405M, it's the first handheld to make me consider one of these cheap handhelds.
And once GameCube, Dreamcast and PS2 are more compatible with them, I'll consider buying one for sure.
Trigger on mine stopped clicking, would like a vid for a fix .🎉
Do you need to buy to from one of those tictok guys or is there a trusted source

Reviewers need to be more realistic about the pricing. Everywhere you look, these are $200 because scalpers/resellers.
Love my miyoo mini plus but it gives me hand cramps. Really want this one but I would want to play the 3DS Metroid games which idk if they run or not
It's $167 USD direct from Anbernic on their website. Not sure how much more realistic to be than state the MSRP price and the best actual place to order from.
How about PSP?
runs the games like a champ. i would watch some videos online because i don't know how the screen looks. the chipset is great for psp though.
I thought with gammaos gamecube was better?
Anybody know why the screen falls out? It hasn't happened to me yet. Possibly because it is metal and when it gets hot the glue loses it's purpose?
battery shield inside the device pushes battery down, towards the screen. Battery pushes the screen outwards. Add constant heating from gaming, you get slowly ungluing screen. If you notice the start of it, just open it, remove battery shield, close it.
