Top 5 Happiest Doctors by Specialty

  • We can define a physician’s happiness in two broad categories: at work and outside of work. Happiness outside of work is largely a function of the lifestyle of the specialty. This encompasses factors like the number of hours spent in the hospital, the amount of money one makes, and how predictable or unpredictable the work hours are. Specialties with favorable lifestyles tend to score higher in terms of happiness outside of work.
    The top five happiest specialties outside of work are rheumatology, otolaryngology, endocrinology, pediatrics, and general surgery.
    Happiness at work is largely dependent on factors like the amount of time spent with patients, the patient population, the immediacy of patient improvement, and the level of stress at work.
    The top five happiest specialties at work are dermatology, ophthalmology, allergy and immunology, followed by a three-way tie between orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, and pulmonary medicine.
    This data may be helpful; however, don't let it sway you completely. Rather than looking at data about others' happiness levels, examine your own. Going into a specialty that you actually enjoy is more important to your long-term happiness than just pursuing whatever has the best lifestyle, procedures, or compensation.

      OMG for real. General surgeons have the most miserable lives I've ever seen. They live for the OR so I don't see how they are happy 'outside' of work

    Currently a 6 year med student, at first I wanted to go to Ortho, but after doing exausting 24 hour shifts I changed my mind to follow a specialty that would allow me to have more free time and experience life like I want to, don't get me wrong, I still want to work as a Doctor, but the quality of my life is more important. That is why I decided to go to Ophtalmology to later on subespecialize in Retina.

      @@TH-camr-by6hx Hey ! Having said that I have a critical care ED shift in 1 hr. Depends what you like. Shift are 8 - 12 hours. The environment is stressful BUT that does not mean you have to be stress :). Pt are critical so you have to be able to create an immediate plan, which many are standardized and over time you know what to do with almost every single patient. Also under pressure some people work better and make the right decisions easier. Trauma comes in you know when too insert a chest tube, place central lines, etc. Is great !

    What about radiology? I mean they make little to no human interactions so they must be very happy in their own large dark room with their noodles 🍜

    • @AvadaKedavra4172
      @AvadaKedavra4172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The human interaction thing is almost completely inaccurate. They pause their dark reading room sessions a few times a day to do little procedures with patients (joint injections, fluoroscopies etc) which actually total at least a couple hours of the workday. Sure, you theoretically can get a job to avoid all procedures but it makes you an abysmal candidate for hiring by practices; even if you do get the job, your income would be greatly cut.
      They also get visits from different workers throughout the day who want something or just hang out to small talk. There's no avoiding social skills in medicine.

  • @TinaOnEarth

    I'm choosing between Pediatrics and PMR. I'm curious as to why pediatrics is the only primary care specialty in the "happiest outside of work" category.

    • @AvadaKedavra4172
      @AvadaKedavra4172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm surprised Pediatrics even made it considering how many problems there are with that specialty. But I guess only the most passionate people would accept all those things and find ways to be happy among that.

    • @TinaOnEarth
      @TinaOnEarth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AvadaKedavra4172 Very true! I’ve heard that there’s a trend for people in pediatrics to work part time and end up investing in side hustles. Maybe that contributes to the “happiest outside of work”.

    • @AvadaKedavra4172
      @AvadaKedavra4172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TinaOnEarth The fact that pediatricians are pulling side hustles and not coasting off of W2 income makes me happy. I want the incoming generation of physicians to be the most financially literate gen there ever was; the lack of this skill currently is partly why institutions get to take advantage of doctors. I'm sure this will let physicians recoup their power back.
      Capitalism is a bloodsport and physicians need to shoot back.

      Where are u from bro? Dentistry here in Philippines sucks. Mostly tooth extraction and basic procedures. Unlike medicine, you have to pay huge amount of money/tuition just to get into a specialization(m.s.orthodontics, periodontics)/residency. Whereas in medicine residency, u get to work and get paid by the hospital at the same time.💁‍♂️ no tuition fees for medical residents
