Why You Shouldn’t Listen to Your Premed Advisor
Premed advisors are great when it comes to navigating college and completing your premed prerequisites. However, they usually aren’t much help beyond that. Here are three reasons you should exercise caution.
First, they lack proper training. You don’t need a specific degree or certification to become a premed advisor-any bachelor’s degree is fine. This means many advisors don’t have experience with premed coursework itself and might not give the best advice when it comes to choosing a major.
Second, premed advisors don’t understand the nuances between choosing MD, DO, or Caribbean schools. They don’t use match rate or attrition statistics when recommending programs, which means they make unrealistic recommendations to students interested in competitive specialties, such as surgery or dermatology. To them, certain specialties are competitive regardless of your school, and anyone can match into any specialty. This is simply not the case.
Lastly, some premed advisors are easily influenced, particularly because they lack the deeper understanding to spot incongruent data. As an example, many Caribbean schools spend large sums of money to win over premed advisors, and it often works. Premed advisors can’t spot the inconsistent numbers.

But this would mean doctors don’t have an incentive to see more patients, neither do they need to see the difficult cases. They can just see the easy ones that will clearly incentivise on the quality of care given. This is a trash system if you think about it. Hospital wait times will be in the month to years instead of weeks to months.

This is misinformation, the rhetoric here is trying to say that value based care is a solution. But “value based care” has been the standard for decades, especially in private practices. Part of the reason that medical care in the states is so much higher than every other country in the world is because of “value based care”.

Exactly how though? The current system exists because the US health system is a profit machine and that system makes the most money. Traditional competition doesn't work in healthcare as sick people often can't shop around and lack the knowledge to make informed tradeoffs even when they do have a choice. So what would drive healthcare providers to switch to this seemingly less profitable model? Or is this just a pipedream

    • @seawright2307

It's "this procedure doesn't provide enough value, so we won't let you have it", so still very profit-based. It has some advantages, for example most insurance companies will pay 100% of sterilization procedures because it saves money over birth control and pre- and post- natal costs. But, the actual value to the patient doesn't matter, only the percived value to the people measuring.

It does matter to an extent. I go to WashU which is one of (if not the top) school for premed students. The classes are insane and the resources rather plentiful. They are more likely to look at a student from my school with an ok gpa of 3.6 and be happier choosing them than someone with the same gpa and extracurriculars at a state school

Sometimes people make the wrong choice at first and it's better to start over rather than keep going. We don't know what the outcome of our decisions will be and that makes it hard to plan ahead, but you don't have to stick to a plan that isn't working out for you.
