Tom Hanks is so likable that no one wants to kill him in a horror movie. Anyway, it's interesting to see how Tom Hanks got his start, even if it was a bit part.
I was reviewing Hanks' first appearance on SNL in 1985 recently and it's absurd how likable he was even then. Some hosts show up and SNL performs around them. Hanks takes complete control whenever he's on screen.
I was curious about this, since most celebrities tend to have skeletons somewhere. Maybe my Google'Fu is off, but I couldn't find squat. It appears he's just a genuinely nice person! That's really refreshing.
"So, what happens to the killer?" "What?" "The killer. How does it end for him? Does the protagonist kill him? Is there a standoff with police? Does he get away? C'mon, you're killing me, Richard." "Oh, um, he gets arrested. Off screen. I don't know, man."
i have to admit i really do miss your horror movie reviews, i still watch your old ones to this day. this was such a hot mess of a slasher movie it's honestly incredible, the script feels like it was written in a day on a stained cocktail napkin and then they just decided to film it because the studio needed a tax break or something. also i appreciate the payoff for all the dragnet stuff at the very end. keep up the great work phelan, i'll always be a fan of yours
Tom Hanks is one of those actors who, regardless of the quality or budget, still manages to pull in a decent performance He's like a less problematic, more mainstream Eric Roberts
I mean, look at Sam Raimi. If you had told me in 2000 he was going to end up directing three Spider-Man films I would have said you were high.@@MissSallyB1
I saw clips of it a while ago. Tom Hanks did say he regretted this movie. Lol. But you gotta love that he was so likable that his character wasn’t murdered. 😂
I love Tom Hanks, but now I feel like if I ever met him, my questions wouldn't be about Apollo 13, Sully or Saving Private Ryan, they'd be about this bloody film instead.
I like how she says "look out the window" after she just saw him... I don't know, teleport or walk away or whatever. I wondered about that in Halloween, too.
I remember other people reviewing this movie but so looking forward to your review on it. The sarcasm you give on your reviews just make my day. Even on bad days. *Thumbs up*
75 cents in 1980 actually seems pretty high for a bag of M&Ms. 90 cents for a candy bar? Movie theaters have been screwing us with the concession stands forever haven't they?
I love the animated reviews but it's nice to see a horror review now and then. And even if you don't do them much, the horror video games reviews are something I look forward to. I wonder if you'd consider doing a video of a really bad horror game? There are some sinkers. Either way, I always enjoy your videos.
He also went on to have small roles in such hidden gems as "The Burbs", "Forest Gump", "The Green Mile" and "The Terminal"...not that ANYBODY remembers those.
I am 38yo, and the first time i discovered Tom Hanks was from when my parents bought the Dragnet VHS tape and we all watched it. Must have been like 89
This is a great example of how perceptive and imperceptive I am: I picked up on all the Halloween references before noticing Phelan's shirt... I even picked up the reference to "The Man Behind the Mask," which I feel works much better in describing Myers even though it was written for Vorhees!
Yoooo this is such a weird feelin, for some reason I used to watch u loads as a kid n young teen loved your movie reviews, im 20 now and this vid just came up on my recommended
25:47 - 26:01 Nice how Amy and Marvin each make a separate decision to just stand by the door, even though Amy knew Ray Carlton was on the other side and Marvin had to have seen the broken glass by the time he showed up, so the killer was obviously still nearby. Truly they were meant to be together.
10:36 it's like the forest where Goldie lives: bears are extinct, but somehow, there are bears in this forest. DESPAIR INTERRUPTING BEARS full of interest.
Even in his first movie Tom Hanks is so likeable and actually gives a good performance that A) he is the best part of the movie and B) he doesn’t even gets killed off. BTW love the use of Dragnet I enjoy that movie as well
I love 25:30 where you can see it's not a collapsible prop knife and he's just turning the blade so it's hidden between the jacket and the sweater. They work so hard in the earlier scenes to hide that that they can't afford a good prop knife and then at the "climax" do a stab to the armpit like a couple middle schoolers goofing around with a butter knife.
The movie that put Tom Hanks on The HollyWood map was The Rom-Com SPLASH where he falls in love with a Mermaid played by Daryl Hannah. SPLASH just so happens to be one of my FAVORITE movies.
Why does "The killer" looks like Phelous photoshoped him in his own movie at 11:05? I guess that's why no one caught him yet -- they keep thinking that he isn't there, assume it is a comedy sketch and get out of sight immediately
Are you ever going to review the MONDO/Corradi psychotic Pinocchio “adaptation”, ‘Welcome Back, Pinocchio!’ ..?? It feels like a huge missed opportunity. It’s arguably their most psychotic feature length production, and undoubtedly the most insane Pinocchio rendition ever made
Yes. I remember The Charmings. I used to come on right after Sledge Hammer, and right before Dynasty on ABC. They tried a lot of crazy ideas back then...
@23:02 - The music that plays during this scene is so iconic though. Its the only real positive I've ever taken from this movie honestly. The version online is still the rip from the movie IIRC (has the bubble sound from the fish tank even). As for the rest of the movie.... :)))) I guess just another 80s forgotten slasher unfortunately. Still a super enjoyable review at least, I guess that's what we got from this movie in the end haha.
Wow! So Tom Hanks was in "Dragnet the Movie"? It's amazing what you learn from watching Phelan's TH-cam show. When it comes to a pick up move, you have to admit Tom Hank's putting his leg out, and tripping a woman, is a great way to get them to fall for him.
Holy Crap. I occasionally think about that show The Charmings but could never remember the name of it and nobody I talked to could even remember it existing. Thank You Phelous, now I know Im not delusional or imagined it.
It just made me happy to see someone name drop the Dragnet movie a ton. It's really stuck with me since I saw it as a kid, especially the ultra catchy 80s as hell theme song.
I live in Upstate New York, there's a theme park that keeps open around the Halloween season, so going to a theme park in cold temps isn't too unusual. I could imagine Tom Hanks' role was meant to feed into some sort of theme about what fear does but it looks as though it doesn't really amount to a whole lot.
Yeah, I'm there too, and I feel like people go to county fairs, hayrides, etc until relatively late in the season, and those aren't that different from theme parks. But maybe in Canada (or the part of it Phelous is from) you have to stop going to those places way earlier in the fall for weather reasons?
when the cell phone came out at the end I was waiting for it to end with "well, Allison just sent me a text saying we're breaking up, guess it's time to go kill random people."
So what happens of Ray Carlton (the Killer) starts stalking someone only to have them break off he wedding before he can give them his business card? Does he just awkwardly go and be Michael Myers somewhere else or is he more like, "Well, you were probably going to get married eventually." Would make as much sense all the other people he kills for tangential connections to a wedding.
Even in his first movies, you can see his hilarious charm. Personally, my favorite film of his is "The Burbs." That's hilarious horror comedy with a great character actor cast.
0:34 Well that just awakened a core memory. Okay I swear I thought you'd just sped up the actual Halloween theme song, I couldn't imagine the movie would do it for you.
Dragnet also had Alexandra Paul, who never was in anything else of relevance to this channel or channels associated with this one. Given those facts, it’s kind of odd for me to even write out this comment and then subsequently press the submit arrow.
This was originally titled 'Blood Wedding' but was renamed 'He Knows You're Alone' by MGM after they picked up the distribution rights. Director Armand Mastroianni never liked the title, thinking it sounded more like a tagline. In fact, the tagline for 'Don't Answer the Phone', released only six months earlier, was "...he'll know you're alone".
I'm not gonna lie, I fully forgot Tom Hanks was in the movie between the opening and when he appeared. It also felt like they were setting up potential killers (the priest, Elliot Hanks, the pervert professor, etc) but they fully showed the killers face. They also gave him a motivation that didn't fit with the majority of his kills. It feels like two separate stories crammed together.
The original screenplay title of "Shriek" I think was a better choice than "He Knows You're Alone" (there are more shrieks in the movie than people being alone). Also, if they liked Tom Hanks so much you'd think he'd be given _more_ screentime instead of less, but I guess scenes such as the friend showering then listening to music were way more important and couldn't be cut.
From the mouth of the Director regarding Hanks death scene: Originally he was scheduled to go but found him so likeable we decided to keep him maybe for a sequel...Never shot his demise.
Can't wait till we get the thrilling sequel: He Knows What He Knows, Boy, But He's Not Telling
Start telling.
"Luckily she is about to get killed..." is a great line overall. I like it out of context.
This is an excellent review of Dragnet: the Movie, featuring Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks is so likable that no one wants to kill him in a horror movie. Anyway, it's interesting to see how Tom Hanks got his start, even if it was a bit part.
I was reviewing Hanks' first appearance on SNL in 1985 recently and it's absurd how likable he was even then. Some hosts show up and SNL performs around them. Hanks takes complete control whenever he's on screen.
How exactly is this dooshbag “likable”…? 🤨🤔

@@Uncle-JayNo wonder that he also played Mr. Rogers (who also had no skeletons in his closet).
@@Uncle-JayI heard his wife is rather rude to waitstaff (drinking problem) but he’s always nice to them. Who knows really.
Tom Hanks did a rap with Dan Ackroyd......my life is complete, Phelous
Aye 😊
Never in my life had I known I needed something so much and not known until I received it
Dragnet is an underappreciated classic.
Well I guess, he KNOWS when you're alone doesn't mean he ACTS when you're alone.
What a weird movie. Thanks for the awesome review!

You never know how an actor will make their debut. This being Tom Hanks' first film is... a choice
you'd be amazed how many A-list actors get their start in C-list horror
I mean, look at Sam Raimi. If you had told me in 2000 he was going to end up directing three Spider-Man films I would have said you were high.@@MissSallyB1
I always look back to the movie trading places and I see Giancarlo Esposito as an uncredited prison inmate. All the great have to start somewhere
I’m an actor and my first film was Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey 2. You don’t choose the films. The films choose you.
I mean, actors gotta eat too so when you're not famous, you can't exactly be picky.
I saw clips of it a while ago. Tom Hanks did say he regretted this movie. Lol. But you gotta love that he was so likable that his character wasn’t murdered. 😂
Although I like Dingo/obscure animation Phelous, it’s always good to have horror movie Phelous return.
What do you mean? Everyone here is a cartoon character, and this movie is pretty obscure.
Thanks!
Thanks again!!!
I love Tom Hanks, but now I feel like if I ever met him, my questions wouldn't be about Apollo 13, Sully or Saving Private Ryan, they'd be about this bloody film instead.
You could also ask him about Dragnet, which he was in.
I like how she says "look out the window" after she just saw him... I don't know, teleport or walk away or whatever. I wondered about that in Halloween, too.
"Ray Carlton" - the slasher killer with the preppiest-sounding name in horror movie history.
I know Phelous was alone when he made this video because he's the only person I can see in this room
Every single time Phelan says "Carlton" the only thing I can think of is "John Carlton is your real name~ John Carlton and not Johnny Cage~!".
Eh 😂 I got that reference
Some say Tom Hanks is still waiting to play that game of backgammon.
I remember other people reviewing this movie but so looking forward to your review on it. The sarcasm you give on your reviews just make my day. Even on bad days. *Thumbs up*

One of your funniest episodes ever. Though I'd probably disagree that Ray is the Hamburglar, because the Hamburglar can keep to a motif.
The actor who played Elliot (Tom Hanks) later went on to have a minor voice acting career doing voices for such films as Disney's Toy Story!
He also went on to have small roles in such hidden gems as "The Burbs", "Forest Gump", "The Green Mile" and "The Terminal"...not that ANYBODY remembers those.
Don't forget Halloween icon David Pumpkins!

He Knows You're Alone...but he's not telling it!
I remember Tom Hanks on a Johnny Carson talking about how all horror films have a moment where "There's a guy with a knife."
Man. Who knew that the dude in Dragnet the Movie was in other films. Crazy when you think about it.
At the point where like and subscribe is so everywhere that I've gotten used to it being said, I love Phelan taking the piss out of it.
If "Mr Awkward" is who I think Phelous is referring to, he also played Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The Charmings! I remember watching that as a kid. Don’t think it’s crossed my mind in like 35 years lol, thanks for jogging my memory.
