This!!!🙌 Soooo many intellectuals were judged for impiety BEFORE Socrates (what research liked calling "the age of persecutions"). The accusation of impiety was introduced around 430 BCE to get rid of political and social reformists whom Pericles had been defending till he died: Anaxagoras, Aspasia, Protagoras (maybe)... Of course, Plato makes Socrates' case extremely dramatic, but it really was a common thing at the time.
Wow, this video must have taken sooo much time and work to develop... Thank you so much for the amazing quality content you always post, you have all my support!!!!👏
Gotta love the youtube algorithm 😅, consider clicking the bell so you get notified when I post new videos! Either way, thanks for the kind comments and support!
I recommend the new book Socrates and his Demise: An Examination of the Historical Figure. This new book offers a somewhat differing and updated view of the causes of Socrates's death than those recognized by Waterfield.
How about this for another way of explaining why Socrates was executed: not that he said democracy was flawed. As you said, that was really nothing new or shocking. Rather: that he said that GREED is a terrible flaw in either an individual or a state! Now that is the kind of teaching that will get oneself killed, either then or today (look at Jesus, Martin Luther King, and many similar executions for further examples of this). Rich people do not want to hear that their greed is a serious character flaw. Nice work on the video, I enjoyed it.
Rich people don’t want to hear it. Neither do the poor. Especially the powerful in any way. We’ve learned the hard way in the past century that democracy, open society, etc. is no cure for greed, imperialism, exploitation, and warmongering. Socrates already knew that millennia ago.
Thank you for a wonderful program. Socrates made me admire him partly because he's anti-egalitarian. So, since I'm an anti-egalitarian Catholic monarchist, I hope other Americans will explain something to me. Why must American presidential candidates meet only two requirements. They need to be native-born Americans who are at least 35-yearl-olds. No one expects a candidate to sign a code of conduct. There's no statesman' aptitude test. Does any candidate run because he thinks he's morally obligated to preserve, protect, and defend his country?/ Does Present Biden or President want to govern to help Americans live morally virtuous lives?
I don't think the execution of Socrates can't be separated from the reign of the Thirty Tyrants that preceded it, despite Plato's pointed avoidance of the connection. I F Stone also wrote about some of the circumstances in his book 'The Trial of Socrates' and I found the book 'Plato Unmasked' by Keith Quincy puts the dialogues in context.
Sure. When people are frightened they are willing to hang the scapegoats, so to speak. But why was Socrates set up for trial in the first place. I think that the deep-seated wounds the elite received at his hands really motivated them to make him the scapegoat. They really really didn’t like all that he had to say about their greed and stupidity. Most of that is ignored by Plato scholars for the very same reason! All of Socrates’ criticisms actually implicate them as well and none of these elite professors want to be called greedy or materialistic. They just want to make a living and pay for their own children going to college like everyone else.
I like the content of this video, but I find your pronunciation of the word "exacerbate" exasperating. 😊 A few other words too... it's weird because you really seem to love this stuff. Keep it up, anyway!
Can't wait to use some of this interesting information 10 years from now when I finally get to the late 5th century in my Athenian Empire series 😅

Looking good.

@@IPlayWithFire135 exactly. This is what very, very few even want to hear about, much less discuss.

so you support a fascist organization which abuses children and dare to talk of virtue?
