Don’t take anything away from the driver of the R32, he is one of the best and talented drivers I’ve race against! That is why I had the confidence to run the outside line beside him. My car is no normal Mx5, I built it with the intention of taking on some serious cars. It is a Gokart on steroids and so much more lighter and nimble than the R32. It is powered by the original Mazda Bp engine, turbocharged on e85 fuel. Thanks to everyone for the positive comments👍 it means a lot! Cheers

One thing I noticed is how many cool races Australia is giving the rest of the world. I still remember that Cox guy with his Honda Civic passing BMWs, Mercedes and what nots while fightint for first place against an AE86, and now this. These are the races I want to watch on TV.

I think it's a culture thing most Americans think fast in a straight line = fast car good race. All the time I tell "car guys" that I own a TT supra, awd bmw, 3000gt but i only race my JRSC d16 civic. They become the most bewildered and ask "why do you race your slowest car?" never mind that my civic can get through the tail of the dragon a full min faster than all the other cars I own.
Agreed very much. There are so many cool sportsman level racing events the world should see. It would open up motorsports to a lot more of the next generation.

I've had both cars. Mx5 with a hard top was always a made track monster, but the r32 gtr for an all rounder is a monster. Mine was a 1.8 turbo too, but that was 18 years ago. 180rwkw in one of those things is insane. Miss it so much. The driver of the mx5 showed how much potential is really in those cars good on him, very well done. Great to see the advan r32 still chopping laps even after a decade on from Mark Berry's days.
That Mazda MX5 is much newer than the R32 in this video also. I could be wrong. But, the R32 looks like it's an 08 and the Mazda looks like a 2012-15...
@@DJBillionator 1993 r32 gtr, and 1998 mx5. Not much to sperate them, and 2 very different chassis built for 2 very different purposes. Affectively the R chassis was pretty much had very little change from 1989 to 2002, and the MX5 was not really that much different starting with the NA platform to the NB, very similar chassis, however that R32 in particular has had a solid 2 decades of development under it, and even went to Tsukuba in Japan and did a sub 1 min.
Oh yes it did. But the Miata driver understood his car, the course, those corners far better. They weren't miles apart performance wise. Racecraft made more difference here than anything else

You're an insightful legend mate, and your tale reminds me of a bloke 'who saw' - over 15 years ago and featured in Zoom' magazine - Buy Used MX5, rebuild BP motor for strength, strap on the very newest Garrett GT25 turbo at the time, add Ohlins coilovers and AP racing brakes - have everything corner weighted. Destroy everyone on the track.
Great pass! Not only did he hold the position after diving into the inside of that corner, but he gave it just as much effort to keep it together going around the outside of the next corner! That takes balls! I'll bet the other driver's ass puckered up when he saw the Mazda alongside him. I don't know who the driver of the Mazda is, but he's got a little bit of Gilles Villeneuve in him. That entire race looks like it would be fun to watch.
One of the funnest cars I've ever drove and lots of potential, out of all the high horsepower cars I've had and driven the Miata is by far one of the funnest cars to drive on the curves period.
I'm planning on buying a 2022 Mazda Miata sport edition. I took a manual 2022 club edition for a 30 minute test drive last weekend, and it was a hell of a lot of fun.
Totally makes sense to me MIata's are known for their handling and in the right hands if you can keep a powerhouse in your sights you always have a chance. Good Running by both drivers.

To this day, Nissans GTR is still being used as a comparison to prove performance of other JDM vehicles. Makes me proud to be an owner of one. When you drive one others always try to prove something against you.. but there is always respect and awe there.

I do laugh that any fast car has to have a Honda engine in 🤣 most engines with enough money thrown at them can out perform many honda engines. It could be a fully built mx5 engine with a hell of a suspension set up. The skyline seemed around 400bhp ish, so the Mazda would prob need 300bhp and a decent set up track suspension to do what he just did.
Mate that's a tough little race car and must be a treat to drive. Can I ask what sort of money that cost you to build as I'm looking at something for my son's to race and enjoy.

The mazda’s racing line is impeccable. So much lighter and faster in the corners too. Hits brakes way later. R driver amazing skill and vehicle. Put em in a straight line and you have an entirely different race.
Less weight is faster thru the turns. You can see later braking and carrying more speed in the corner, can only do that with a less weight. GTRs are great cars but they are heavy.

Miata, my favourite car in Need For Speed Underground2! It truly does carry speed through corners! A real weapon with enough power!
