I’m a beginner gouache painter that is SO glad I found your channel! I’ve watched so many gouache tutorials but none as helpful as yours! So it’s official...definitely my favorite gouache instructor! Thank you for the valuable lesson...explaining it so beautifully!
Please keep this format. Your art process is so interesting. Showing the reference picture helps me immensely and not many artists do this. I have subscribed and liked from this first lesson. Thanks for recording for us.
I'll echo a bunch of people below: lots of great tips for a new gouache painter like me, thanks! A lot of your tips will be helpful for me: starting with the big brush is maybe the change I can make first. You didn't mention it, but I notice that you don't seem to worry about rinsing out your brush completely before going on to the next color. And you're also mixing the colors on your palette with the brush, not with a mixing knife. I'm a neat freak, so I have all my separate little color pools, and I'm mixing with a knife all the time, and I'm always worrying about contaminating my pure red/yellow/blue/white/blacks. Especially since I'm trying to learn to mix colors, I like to keep them separate so I can see what's going on, but I'll try to relax a bit about mixing the color w/ my brush. I also do a bunch of pencil sketching or even inking before I start painting, and I found your video while looking for gouache underpainting demos. I'm going to use your advice about starting with a thin underpainting, letting it dry well, and then going thicker as I go on top of that. Anyway....sorry for the long comment. Thanks again!
Thank you for your kind words! And I'm really glad my video helped you. I can understand what you mean about mixing / contamination. *Sometimes* that can be an issue, but usually I'm just painting so quickly (trying to get the wet into wet effect) that there's no time to stop and premix every single subtle color shift. That "mix" happens live on the paper. It's just my preference. I know plenty of people who are more interested in a graphic style, where the color is premixed then placed in the appropriate place on the paper, not mixing on the paper. So it's a style preference! You might like that version. If you google philip boelter you'll get an idea of what I mean by a more graphic style. I also recommend doing color charts first - check out my other color chart video if you don't know what I mean. That really helps with color mixing.
Just getting started in gouache and I love your approach and teaching style. This tutorial is exactly what I am looking for! Your channel is fantastic as is your Skillshare course!
I really enjoy your channel. Aside from being an amazing artist, you are a great teacher. I am trying guache now and these tutorials are very helpful. Thanks for all. ♥️
Hi Sarah, I learn so much more from this format. Time lapses are ok to watch, but for learning…this real time format with all the tips and teaching is much more helpful. Besides, it is very enjoyable and relaxing to listen to you talk about your process.
I too am a beginner gouache painter and am soooo very thankful I found your channel! You teach very well, not to mention your artwork is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing your time and talents with us!😊
Just discovered your channel. And along with James Gurney, I feel like I've learned so much about gouache and layering and so many other techniques. And your tutorials and reviews of the different art products used are unmatched in their comprehensiveness and clarity. Thanks for sharing, and looking forward to more. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your process and technique! It has been very helpful to watch how you use gouache and hearing you talk through your thoughts as you create paintings.
It was super helpful watching you paint from a picture; I'm often stuck looking at a landscape or scene, no matter how complex or simple, and not knowing what to include, what to blur, what to make focal, so watching you do so even if you didn't talk about it was very instructional. Thank you!
Love your channel Sarah. This is one of the better gauche videos I’ve seen. Took Fowkes class too. About using gray. I’m trying to force my decision making too. When picking a color I’m automatically thinking of the opposite to neutralize it. Sometimes that creates another battle. More practice for me. Your channel really helps with encouragement and inspiration. Thanks so much.
Hi Sarah - thanks so much for this! It is so hard to find real time painting videos for gouache. As I've just started experimenting with this medium, you have no idea how helpful this has been! Especially that side by side study too. That tip for using the big brush as long as you can is a god send - I think I've realised the culprit of a lot of my problems. I do get caught up in the details, and that's actually why I wanted to try and use gouache. Really want to capture the essence of landscapes in just a fun, loose way. I think that's the appeal of them. For many artists, it's actually difficult wrapping our heads around how to simplify these landscapes, so again very helpful. I definitely think you should keep doing more videos like these, and not just time-lapses like many others are currently doing. P.S. I'm also in Scotland so that's pretty cool! :)
This is sooooo helpful to hear! I really appreciate you taking time to write that. I definitely plan on doing more. I just recently changed my schedule which allows me to make more video content :)
I am trying to improve my painting with gouache. Bumping into your channel is one of the best things for me. It's informative! Thank you so so much for sharing your process. It's really insightful for me 🤗
You are a wonderful teacher! I'm a watercolor artist using gouache for the first time, I've watched 2 of your videos, they are very helpful and your voice is very soothing! Thanks for sharing your approach and your tips with us!!
First time viewer. Excellent video tuition. LOVE the tonal study followed by the colour study! Does a great job of illustrating how tone is the foundation of a successful painting. TFS!! New subscriber.
I finally bought some gouache paints! I am so glad I found you…you have inspired me. I even got a journal and a big brush so I can follow along. I like the way you explain why you make the decisions you do.
i just finished the two painitings. They are my first grayscale AND only-primaries studies. Till now i followed easy tutorials on youtube. This video is amazing, I learned so much and i understood where i need to practice more. Thank you very much for your channel. I will watch all your gouache practice and paint-alongs for sure! Thank you once again! 🌹
Very helpful. I have been using mostly watercolor and decided to branch out into gouache, your instruction does a nice job of discussing differences. Thank you
So much to love! I like the overall process - the real time - I love your tips like using a big brush until you can't and making yourself incorporate Grey's so as to understandcolour, and even the intuitive and important idea of using your brush stroke to mimic the movement of the snowfall. Thank you!
I want to get more comfortable with gouache, so I'm challenging myself to follow along with TH-cam videos so it's less overwhelming. Your videos are perfect!
This is probably one the of most helpful painting videos I've seen. I've noticed I need to work on my lighting and this video gave me so many ideas of ways I can practice to improve. Thank you for sharing this.
I learn a ton from these small gouache landscapes, I could watch them allllll day. You have a great way of teaching this medium. Also what masking tape do you use? :)
Absolutely amazing... I'm just soaking up so many of your videos! Do you by chance have the reference photo for the snow covered tree you were doing in the first part of the video? It's stunning!
Thanks! This is really helpful for me. It's inspiring. I enjoyed watching you work fast and yet very deliberate. I hope to do gouache again applying what I have learned from you. Thanks.
Thanks that was lovely...would love to know more about the colours you have chosen, the brand, and your mixing method...keep it up...it is wonderful! Janis...cheers from The Yukon, Canada
Amazing! i love your sketchbook and i learned a lot in this video. i'll keep in mind to not focus too much on the little details but instead, focus painting the bigger picture. will definitely try painting using bigger brush from now on. thanks, sarah.

Well hey, I'm glad I stumbled across your channel. I've been an artist for years but for some reason never painted or tried landscapes and I love the look of gouache so bought a set and was looking for just the right tutorial to begin. And I found this and did it right along with you and I LOVE the results. My drawings are detail oriented and realistic and it is very freeing to use a big brush and use large sweeping motions. I think I'll start with a lot of b/w to get my values down and then continue with gouache. You made my evening fun and I'll check out your other videos. I've like and subscribed. Thanks!

I'm so glad you find it valuable!
yes! you get to imagine how you would do to paint a certain part on the reference and then compare it with her experienced approach.
Oh I am gobsmacked by the beauty of this little painting!
I find when I attempt Grey value studies that I need to vary the intensity of the values of just grey which is hard for me.

Just discovered your channel. And along with James Gurney, I feel like I've learned so much about gouache and layering and so many other techniques. I love the real time videos! This one helped realize I can use my sketchbook as tonal and color studies. I’ve never thought of that. Thank you!
Thank you! And I'm glad to hear that!
Love your channel! There’s hardly any gouache instructions on TH-cam.
I’m glad you enjoy my videos!

The color and value study is a brand new concept to me and I absolutely love it!
