      I think a film franchise that does not allow for its protagonists to prevail over their adversary is pointless. A person gets a premonition of dying, is somehow allowed to act to avoid that death, yet it’s still inevitable that death will then influence the living world to kill you anyway out of spite. It’s a self-defeating plot.

    I was working in the movie theater when this film came out. At the time, I had no idea what it was about, other than it being a horror movie. As an usher, I came in between showings to check other patrons to make sure everything was ok, and I would occasionally watch snippets of the films(though I couldn’t watch them for too long, as I would get in trouble), and I was completely lost as to what was going on. The first Final Destination film I watched was actually 3, whom I saw with my friends. After seeing that, I went back and watched 1 and 2, and found them good, as I too was intrigued by the concept of death itself stalking people. To me, this movie offered the first real innovation of the slasher genre since Nightmare on Elmstreet, although I felt the sequels got progressively more and more gruesome.

  • @riffbw
    @riffbw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    One of the best and you hit the nail on the head Minty. The fact that it's a slasher without the slasher character is what makes this so scary. Like Jaws or Alien where we don't see the killer until the end, this movie makes the killer unseen and takes that next step. How do you stop an enemy that is an idea or force and not a tangible being?
    I personally think the series started going off the rails when they started trying to predict who was next. 2 wasn't terrible about it, but 3 and beyond became really goofy trying to foreshadow the next kill. It gave the characters too much power. Sticking with the "creating new life" idea in 2 and leaving Tony Todd as a major player to aid the survivors in future movies would have been much better. I personally liked them linking the first two movies and wish the rest were more tied to the original plane crash. Can they ever stop the cycle?
    But this movie is one of the best horror movies of its era and I refuse to listen to the critics. It's fresh, tense, and unpredictable.

    You’re the 1st person to ever point out the 3 movie posters and that’s exactly what they were going with. Cinemas would occasionally get specific instructions when putting up promotional material for movies and for this movie the posters were supposed to put in the same order you mentioned with the 1st one at or near the entrance or lobby, the 2nd at the ticket or box office and the 3rd near the screen it was going to play in or outside the shop. So the impression was that people would see the subtle changes as they made their way in to see the movie.

    One of the greatest, most entertaining and eerie horror franchises of all time! That's my hill, and I'm dying on it. Besides what Minty already mentioned, I think that one feature that's great for us gore fetishists, the "Final destination" franchise has, and uses, the opportunity to let us see each character die a grisly death twice. And in the case of the first two, we get Ali Larter - who is truly charismatic and downright oozing star quality.

    Final Destination 2 did touch on the premise of the alternate ending from the first movie. The character who had the original premonition some of the deaths that would have occured without her interference is told my the mortician that only new life can stop death. She recall a pregnant woman being among the survivors and set out to keep her safe until the baby is born. After the baby is born, she has a flashback to her original premonition, and realizes the pregnant woman wouldn't have been killed in the original turn of events.

    I thought this movie was a total breath of fresh air, during a time when the horror genre was back in decline, & it seemed as though there was truly nothing new under the sun to be done. It was a great concept, & truly fresh. I can't think of anything prior that could be considered as being a huge influence on this story. Also, these films are just relentlessly entertaining in their morbidly creative death scenes...

    There was a Lenticular theatrical poster made for it. The picture used for the #3 variant poster is actually a pic of the Lenticular version. And the Lenticular version of the poster changes from their faces when alive to the skeletal faces show in pic #3. Basically it changes from version #1, to version #2, then finally to version #3.
    it's one of my fav movie posters I own as there's not too many theatrical posters that had Lenticular versions. Plus it's pretty cool to see the change from alive to dead of the main cast.

    Nobody ever seemed to notice that the deathly force in the first film was different from all the others. For instance, the scene when it came for Tod. The toilet sprung a leak, causing Tod to trip up into the bath and hang himself. The water leak then unnaturally retracted back into the tap behind the toilet removing any trace of there being a leak in the first place. no other death in the series did this, it just felt so deliberate and sinister as opposed to everyone dying from extreme freak accidents and there were no other efforts to cover deaths tracks

    Growing up, I was not allowed to watch horror movies, because my mom thought they would rot our brains. So, one day, her and an ultra religious friend were having a mom's day out and decided to end it out with a trip to the theater. They had no idea what was playing and decided on posters alone which to watch. They decided on Final Destination just based on "that cute kid from casper" was in it.
    They didn't realize it was a horror movie until the first kid died, but decided it was too late to sneak out. My mom ended up loving the movie (not sure about her friend). She let up her horror movie rule after this, not that it mattered since I had just turned 18 that year anyways.
