This is heartbreaking to watch but thank you for highlighting the irreversible damages tourism and tourists can hold when people are ignorant, irresponsible and selfish. I hope something can be done to protect these animals migrating.

There needs to be a balance… limitations, control/protections, and better communications so the peoples can earn livings and the tourists are still welcomed.

This should be required viewing at every tourist agency that sells game viewing packages to Serengeti NP (Tanzania) and the Mara (Kenya) to see the river crossings during migration season - packages that can cost thousands of USD and more. It should be required viewing, too, for anyone contemplating such a trip. I have been to the Mara at the height of the migration season several times, and what you see in these clips is no exaggeration. There can be dozens of 4WDs at a single crossing. In the end, it comes down to the individual drivers and the tourist companies they work for - and how pushy the tourists are. If drivers are working solely for tips, they'll do whatever they can to ensure the biggest tip. The more reputable safari companies pay their people properly - that's why these companies are often the most expensive to travel with - and work with the local Maasai, who understand it's in everyone's best interest - animals included - to see that park rules are followed and viewing the migration is conducted in an ethical, responsible manner. Kenya and Tanzania are very different. The Kenya side of the border is Maasai land, held in trust to the Kenyan government - that's why the Maasai Mara is officially called a reserve, not a national park. The Maasai who live there are heavily invested in the tourist infrastructure. The camp I stayed at was staffed, managed and operated by the Maasai, and the drivers are Maasai. They look after the park because it is their home and their livelihood. It's rare that Maasai drivers will go crazy and tear up the river banks, looking for the best vantage point. The Maasai are often the best police you can have: It's their asset, their way of life, and they are hidebound-determined to protect the land and the animals that live in it. The Tanzania side of the border is very different. Serengeti National Park is a national park - the clue is in the name - and so people are not allowed to settle and live there - Maasai included. (Not-so-fun fact: The Maasai were forcibly evicted from Serengeti under the presidency of Julius Nyerere, dating back to Tanzania's independence from colonial rule, and, yes, there was violence. There has been recent violence in the Loliondo region, which borders Kenya and the Serengeti park boundary in the east. Maasai have been forcibly evicted from Loliondo in just the past few months. The park proper is policed by game rangers, often undermanned and overstretched, who work for the Tanzanian government. The problem with poaching and snaring with wires is especially prevalent in the west of the park, toward Lake Victoria, where there are many agricultural communities dealing with an ever-growing population and constant drought. For these people, the situation is dire - during the three months of the year when the wildebeest are crossing into the Maasai Mara from Serengeti's western corridor, it's only natural that these villagers will poach the occasional wildebeest if it means feeding their families or going hungry. It's a problem, and no one has yet to find a workable solution that satisfies everyone. Kudos and respect to the makers of this program for focusing on real, on-the-ground issues, and not doing what would have been easier, and easier to see to the gullible TV-viewing public: trot out the same old homilies about how wonderful everything is. The migration is truly awe-inspiring thing to witness in person, but as with anything, there's a lot more going on beneath the surface than meets the eye. It's not The Lion King.

Yes and no. Responsible, properly managed tourism is actually a boon, because it provides vital funds for conservation efforts. Patrolling the parks and making sure everyone follows the rules can be expensive, in terms of gas, food, supplies, salaries, vehicles, equipment, insurance etc. The trouble is that unethical tourism - the basic cash grab, epitomized by mass tourism - is much easier to do, and more profitable, than traveling light and leaving a light footprint.

Is there data to support the locals opinion? Last I remember, they thought the wild beast population should be reduced because it's too much but after 20 years of data shows the increase in wildabeast sustain nature along side with predators which supposedly saved the forest. The 20 years of data changed people's opinions about nature. 🤔 If a wildabeast die the predator would not go hungry,: wild dogs, vulture, lion, hyena, alligator etc.

who have you listened to!!!!!! Wildebeast are decreasing because of fencing introduced in the Kruger Park in the 50's. Thank god the fences have been pulled down but the damage to the vegetation was so bad that there is now a different eco system and the numbers of zebras and wildbeast have drastically decreased.
If you ask that question you are a fool. Those vehicles that you see there have altered nature. YOU MAKE ME WANT TO WEEP , YOU ARE A FOOL THAT DOES NOT USE YOUR BRAIN

@@reachforthepie so how does one enjoy nature?the zoo is already offensive to 90% of people 🤔, so TH-cam only options? I don't think anyone is forcing any animal off a cliff. How am I supposed to teach my kids to respect nature if he can't experience it himself? Like riding a bike? Keep reading the book until you stop falling? It seems the big corp is editing the video just to sell us fake documentary. Because you know, profit is bigger than facts now adays. We need data. So for now fact is, I see at Most 9 vehicle max? This sounds like more pbs selling drama than selling fact 🤔.

@0:40 selfish tourists blocking poor wildebeests forcing them to take another route which they're not familiar and fatalities goes up much higher.
@1:40 unfamiliar route and high banks causes them to fall and break their legs, yes of course some of them will end breaking their legs too if they take their usual route but the fatalities will be much lower.
People are so selfish they don't care about making their life more harder and dangerous as long as they can get a good view.

Eco tourism is a problem around the world. In the US people go to the National Parks and get out to get the best photos, even though signs say not to get out of your car because it’s dangerous. They do it anyway. People don’t realize that tourists disrupt the animals daily life. They will be causing the destruction of the very animals they claim to love.
