The lead singer, David Gilmour, is one of the finest guitarists who ever lived. He’s never done fast, flashy solos much, but in his hands that guitar is like a living thing, that can cry and moan and sing. He’s amazing.

When I was 17. my girlfriend was killed in a car accident. after the funeral I came out to my car by myself, sat there crying and turned on the radio, This was playing, I vowed from that day forward I would never forget her, and every time I hear this song I remember Teresa. Im now 61yrs old and I can still see her face. forever 17 ): Wish you were here.

Pink Floyd are one of the most iconic bands ever. They take you on a journey . Their sound was unique and is timeless. This song remembers their great friend and colleague Syd Barrett who sadly passed away. However we can all relate to this song as we remember our own loved ones who are no longer here.

You missed the point of the song. It wasn't written because he passed away. He was lost to them due to mental illness and drug abuse while he was still alive. That's why he left the band. The song was written and released when he was still alive.

This was in 1994. I saw them in concert on this tour, and it was most amazing concert I've ever seen! It was like a religious experience. They are legendary, and this was their final tour. Wish You Were Here was about their founding member, Syd Barrett, who left the band back on late 60s due to some serious mental issues exacerbated by his heavy use of LSD.

There aren't many groups who put on such a stage show as Pink Floyd. One of the things I really liked about them is that they were not afraid to use dissonant intros with some of their songs, they act almost like a mental palette cleanser to give the audience a clean slate for the next epic song to come.

This is the one and only David Gilmore! And this recording is 30 years old from one of the most epic concerts ever pulled off. Other must sees from this concert: Comfortably Numb and High Hopes (at least)! PS: and some say the second guitar solo of Comfortably numb of the Pulse Concerts is the best guitar solo ever played on this planet. (And I tend to agree!)

One of my favourite songs of all time. When my father died suddenly, my brother would sit in his room and play this song and I would sit outside his door and listen along. I knew he wanted to be alone but I wanted to connect and felt like I was connecting with him through this song. 30 years later, I still don't know if he knew I was just on the other side of the door, feeling it with him.

According to Roger Waters (in the documentary about the making of the album Wish You Were Here), who wrote the lyrics, this song is about activism. The "here" in Wish You Were Here is not a place, but a state of mind. He didn't share this with David Gilmour, and David always sang this song as if he were singing it to Syd. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is about Syd, though. Think of activism, and the lines "Did you exchange/a walk-on part in the war/for a lead role in a cage" (among other lines) make a lot more sense.

In Pink Floyd fashion they use sound effects in the intro. With the studio version you can really tell that it begins with playing through a radio. David Gilmore is not just singing and playing guitar but singing a "duet" with his guitar. It is another song inspired by the loss of Syd Barrett, one of their founding members.

The lyrics are deep as well; the original founder of the band had mental health issues, left the band and disappeared from their lives. The entire album is conceptually about Syd Barrett, specifically "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," and the challenges of the music industry ("Have a Cigar").
"Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" - Crazy good.
(Barrett actually appeared during the sessions for the album, and they didn't fully recognize him. I think he thought he was still in the group. It's a sad story, but the group went on to greater heights under Roger Waters/Dave Gilmour)

Honestly, I feel like I'm getting up there in years (I'm 38). Not too bad off yet, but I feel old. But seeing people discover Pink Floyd songs for the first time really does take me back. I was maybe 12 when I first heard Pink Floyd from my friend's stepdad's record collection, and I haven't looked back since. A lot of the first songs I ever learned to play on guitar were Pink Floyd. This is wonderful to see, much love, friend.
EDIT: Also, his name is Dave Gilmour. He is a brilliant musician. Even Dave Mustaine of Megadeth (who never has anything nice to say) said David Gilmour could do more with one note than most guitarist could do with an entire fretboard. I tend to agree.

  • @godbeIess

the opening sound effects are of a transistor radio as one rotates the station dail. It stops at a guitar on an off tined station. That guitar is Syd, his guitar slowly fades into oblivion as the Band starts to play their clean music. There message was always more than lyrics. Their music is in sync with the lyrics. Shine On YOu Crazy Diamond displays that even more so than on this song. Greats Band ever. The members are dying off, but the music will stay like the great Composers of Classical music. Future generations will say, "shhhh, Pink FLoyd" getting people to be quite so he can listen to the unique sounds of PF.

Lots of talent in Pink Floyd, all over the place, from the rest of the instrumentalists, to the backup singers who are phenomenal. That being said, in the instance you referenced, "his name" is David Gilmour and he is an extremely rare example of someone with the unique combination of lyrical genius, vocal extraordinariness and instrumental mastery. I can count on one hand the number of artists I'm aware of (I'm sure there are many that nobody knows) that have all three.

I loved seeing your reaction to this music, they started in London I think it was in 67 / 8 and played about with music all of it mood music (apart from a few pop songs for the money) but they were probably the first of the Progressive Rock bands, I remember hearing they used to travel round to gigs in a large lorry (big truck) with all their instruments and sound gubbins one of which was a large brass gong about 4 foot wide just for the sound of it.
If you like the voice thing you must listen to “The Great Gig In The Sky” Pink Floyd. That will blow your mind it was never done before that and it certainly hasn’t been done since. The voice I’m talking about in the early 70s they dragged in a session singer they had heard to sing for the group one song. No go and listen!!!
Another voice you may like is Deep Purple “Child In Time” that is another gods of rock early 70s. Go fly girl!!!

Loved your reaction. I think you would make yourself and many of your listeners very happy if you reacted to the song Comfortably Numb from the same concert.

The pivot line for me is, "did you exchange, a walk on part in a war, for a lead role in a cage?" Ugh. Great question. Great post.

Oh girl, you're in for a ride with Pink Floyd! Try 'One of these days' from the same 1994 PULSE concert tour. And then 'Mother' live in 1980.

Well Miss Brittany, you love a story and now you have entered the rabbit hole. Pink Floyd has one of the greatest Rock and Roll stories, so buckle up. Every one of there albums are like a short novel, every song feeds off of the previous one. So even though you didn't start from the beginning, I think you might get a hint of the whole picture. They are truly fantastic. Have fun on this journey.

When they get to the line about trading a walk on part in the war. For the lead role in a cage. It reminds my husband about his dad. He fought in the Korean War. He spent 27 months 17 days in a Chinese POW camp..

Don’t know if it was mentioned, but this song was originally written as a tribute to the band’s original singer, Syd Barrett, who was on their first two albums and a number of early singles. Syd sadly suffered from psychological issues as well as drug addiction, and kind of just drifted away from the band, unable to cope. He attempted a solo career, putting out a couple of albums before he left the music business for good in 1972. “Shine on you crazy diamond” and several other songs have been said to be about Syd.

The lead singer on this is David Gilmour. He's also known for being Pink Floyd's lead guitarist. For years Pink Floyd also had Roger Waters as a singer and bass player. According to Gilmour this song was written by both himself and Waters. Gilmour wrote the music with Waters writing the words. Gilmour thought it was the best song they ever wrote together. Thanks.

In 1989, I was at their concert in Venice. The stage was set up on a huuuge raft on the sea in the middle of the bay, surrounded by small boats. There was such a crowd on the waterfront and in the square that you could barely squat down.

Fun fact: in „Keep talking“ (of the same concert) Gilmore uses a „talk box“, which feeds the distorted sound of the electric guitar through a tube into his mouth and he can alter the sound by opening and closing his mouth or changing the shape of his mouth. This creates a similar effect to a wha-wha pedal. In any case - probably something you might be interested to see!

We used to play this in the local clubs years ago. It takes (and I can't stress this enough) nuts the size of space hoppers to scat in time with the guitar like that in front of a small crowd, let alone a mega-concert.
