  • Moving on to April and May 1987, three classic arcade games (well, maybe more like two classics and one "whuzzat?") arrive on NES in rapid succession courtesy of Data East and Konami. Konami's two games share a tenuous link in their cold wars roots, while Data East's game is... well, it's weird.

      I loved Track & Field a lot back then, but it also was the scariest Game Over screens for me even to this day, I genuinely feel fearful every time the game over sound plays in it which is why I rarely play it (even though it was really good)

    Good call on combining multiple smaller titles into single videos. Makes the whole future scope of the series seem more manageable.

    Great video, but I'm surprised you missed this as Track & Field is literally two games in one. Five of the six events from the original arcade version were included (hammer throw was left out) and the other three come from the coin-op sequel Hyper Sports. In fact the NES version was originally two separate Famicom releases, Hyper Sports and Hyper Olympic, each containing four events, but was seemisly stitched together as one game for the North American release.

    Rush'n Attack was included in the GBA Konami arcade collection. That game let you input the Konami code to unlock special features like new graphics or levels. Rush'n Attack got two new levels I think... but I was never able to reach them lol. But it did control better than the NES game since jump was mapped to a face button while special weapons were mapped to the shoulder buttons. Man, that was easily the best compilation on GBA.

    Fun fact: in Rush 'N Attack, you can kill the jump kicking soldiers while standing completely still and jamming on the knife button. They'll try to jump kick you, but when their foot connects with your sprite, they die. I never even realized this probably wasn't an intentional thing until I played the arcade version of Green Beret years later and found that this didn't work.
    Regardless, it definitely trivializes some of the game.

      It was the wild west days of game production. It actually continued well into the life span of the snes. People were still not taking videogames seriously and did not consider them any kind of "threat" to their IPs or profits.
      Years later, Japan made console developers promise not to release consoles on a regular work day as it interfered with attendance.
      Even more years later, Halo 2 is blamed for an abysmal week for movie theater profits.
      😂

    • @Ginormousaurus
      @Ginormousaurus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of video game companies have gotten away with plagiarism. SNK's Vanguard copied Jerry Goldsmith's "Main Title" theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Queen's "Vultan's Theme (Attack of the Hawkmen)" from Flash Gordon. However, Konami got an official Olympic license for the Japanese version of Track & Field, so maybe they also obtained a license to use the Chariots of Fire theme.

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, but the IOC is absolutely notorious about IP enforcement, and they will come down hard on anyone making anything that even LOOKS like an Olympic product without their permission. There's no way Konami could have put out an Olympic-branded product without paying for the license, the IOC *would* have shut them down and\or leaned on the Japanese government to do so. They're way more powerful than your typical music composer.

    Rush 'N' Attack to me has the feel of Contra. It is intense.. You don't play your best? You're dead! The music is totally awesome as well. While not a perfect game once you master the stiff controls it is very enjoyable. I didn't go beyond the forth stage but once I heard my cousin had finished the game I went on it again and finished it. Once I did finish it something "happened". It never felt so hard again... Although there are perhaps three moments that I still can have a hard time with. Lovely game!

    Basic port or not, Burgertime is a game I have tremendous affection for, no matter its format. To my childhood self (born in December '79), it belonged to a class of games like Dig-Dug, Q*Bert, Centipede, Robotron 2084 and Frogger that were bright, colorful and worked on their own strange internal logic that made perfect sense to my preschool brain somehow. And I can still hit the high score board on Burgertime to this day when I find it in the wild.

      I feel the same. Those classic arcade games were bright and colorful and they bring back so much nostalgia. I saw them as having a special place in the nes library. Like here’s your chance to play them at home after blowing so many quarters at the arcade. It it was OK that they were simple because it was understood that they were from an earlier time in gaming.

    It seems that at this point that the NES is mostly killer and less filler. These three games are all good. They're not out-of-this-world amazing but they're well made and certainly aren't bad, particularly for the time period. It's astonishing to see three such games come out in succession like this... and Castlevania is next?! By 1988 I doubt we'll see streaks like this without some Acclaim-esque shovelware in between. At this point the NES is popular enough to have third party support but we're not at the point yet where every two-bit software publisher is trying to cash in on the Nintendo "fad".

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The western publishers hit in force in 1988, and the quality ratio plummets precipitously. NES 1987 is fantastic because it's almost entirely the best stuff from Famicom, with the majority of the crap filtered out.

    One of my fondest gaming memories is playing Mario Party 4 on the GameCube with (against) my brother. There was one mini-game in particular whose name I can't recall, but the general thrust of the game was that you had to charge up power to strike a Whomp, which would then hit other Whomps in a domino-like line, and the winner was the player who knocked down the most Whomps in succession.
    In practice, of course, this meant...mash the A button as many times as you can in the ten second "charge" window and the number of Whomps you knocked down was simply how many times you pressed the button. Fortunately - or unfortunately - my brother and I both have the same "arm vibration" superpower as the individual you showed in this video. So this meant that when this particular mini-game would come up, he and I would make brief, knowing eye contact before both laying down on the floor, getting our wrists in position, and drastically reducing the shelf life of our controllers' primary face button. I believe our scores would routinely fall within the 100-110 range, which equates to 10 or 11 button presses per second.
    We probably both have long-term wear and tear issues with our forearms, but that's a worthy price to pay for bragging rights in the living room.

    Actually, games like the ISIS one you mentioned do exist :/ IS Defense for an example exists on steam. It's about a NATO soldier fighting ISIS on the shores of Europe. I have no idea if the game is any good, because I've never seen it in action, I just know of its existence.

      The big difference though is that while those games exist today, they are cheap indie titles while Rush'n Attack was "AAA" for the time.

    Track & Field,
    "..cartoon athletes sporting '70s pornstaches."
    In my country the game characters could look like 70s school PE teachers.

    Despite playing a lot of shitty games on the NES in the 5 years i owned one, Burger Time always was the game me and my clique of friends mentioned when we wanted to refer to a shitty shit game. It was basically a running gag. Might not have been fair, i don't know, i just thought it was an infinitely boring game...but it was also a game from 1982 which i don't believe was a fact i was aware of then.

    Looks like you didn’t get the full hang of BurgerTime. If you let the enemies get close to you so they are on the pice of burger you are walking on when you finish with it, they will ride it all the way to the bottom.
