Great video on a "modern" deuce rig. I use my old '91 issue for camping and bushcraft because it's just more COMFORTABLE than a rucksack & carries the same amount of gear. We had the LC-2 "H" suspender/harness with the "J" hooks which perfectly carries a second 3 day/training buttpack over the one on the belt. A couple of months ago I replaced the belt buttpack with the British gas mask bag, and switched the two bulky 1 qt canteens with four GI Aviator 1pint (half quart) canteen flasks

    • @jamesr792
      @jamesr792 ปีที่แล้ว

British gas mask bags are top notch kit
I really like using them as an adjunct to a pack because you can snap the strap around it and buckle it into place and take it off easily once you get where you need to go-it’s great for fishing, for example, or just as a “possibles” bag

I've been putting together a grab-n-go vest (not a plate carrier) and mounted one of the packs up high, on the rear. There is enough space for a smaller pouch below flanked by two canteen carriers. It's a 5.11 vest. Zippers up the front with three buckles. Molle everywhere.

I have the same basic buttpack made by someone else (I think Eagle). It's a great item. Mine kicks the functionality up a notch or two, with a couple of extra compartments for small things. Love it for the size. Love it for being essentially the same as an ALICE pack in smaller form.

Not a big fan of the first gen Alice belt.. When they upgraded the buckle I was like he'll yeah ! The 2nd gen with black snap buckle the way to go if your a bigger guy. You can snap in extenders. Up till then I would always go back to the m56 belt. The dang buckles on first gen Alice belts like to open up on you in a belly crawl..
Anyways good video. I'm old school guy when it comes to home bug out equipment. Got a set of m56/67/Alice weight bearing equipment for each member of the family and med. Alice pack. The kids call it dad's ready room or dads apocalypse room. Everything is a in ready to go order if needed. That old stuff is extremely cheap to outfit a family 9 ... But your right there are better rigs out there but I wouldn't be able to afford to out fit the family.
The 5 kids that moved out all been offered to take there equipment with them but so far they like the idea of coming to Dads in a time of crisis. That may change once they start a family.
It's always funny to see them bring a bf or gf over for the first time and give them a run down of what to do.
I may be nuts but I know my family is set if need be. Poor man security.
Glad I found your videos.. Going to subscribe.

I am kinda doing the same thing but with a 5.11 vest. I have a similar butt pack, but placed it higher up, which leaves room below it for a smaller pouch or a sleeping bag/blanket roll. Flanked by two canteens. For ammo pouches, trying to determine which rifle(s) I want to configure it for. Ammo pouches can be almost universal or at least useable with different platforms.

Dump pouches are for retention so you can do a "speed reload" where you retain your magizine and not a "combat reload" where you intentionally drop your magizine. Its more CQB/AUC/MOUT than some long distance stuff, so it does make sense....in 2nd FAST we used to use our cargo pockets and Im certain so did others before us, so his comment about putting your mags back doesnt compute. The drop pouch is an extra cargo pocket

i dont disagree with your justification of the dump pouch in a cqb role. but this video exercise is a modernization of the old 782 gear which was designed to be an all around land warfare rig. to take up valuable belt real-estate for a dump pouch...when you do have two perfectly good cargo pockets...seems like not the best choice.

I have a fox recon pack that is exactly like that tactical tailor buttpack, i would like to find a better harness, im using an older H harness and i dont like how wide and thick the straps are, they interfere with my arms when i try to reach to the sides, i might have to just buy buckles and webbing and make my own, i do like the butt pack setup for going through the really thick brush, i have messed up knees and having the pack down on my waist makes it easier to duck down under low branches and bushes so i dont have to bend my knees the way a higher backpack would.

Are we telepathically linked or something?
I'd just ordered the TT Buttpack after finding it on eBay, and thought I'd use it as a small assault pack, hopefully in a modular/quick detach manner so that I could quickly trade it (or perhaps the whole upper part of my DF-LCS) for my Alice frame and pack...
I'd been moving towards copying the m-1967 USMC knapsack and Buttpack combo (their newer experimental version of their old 1941 model gear... Newer in 67, anyway) with an lc2 belt, H-harness with rearward clips to attach pack, etc.
After finding the USAF vest/harness, and watching one of your videos on its utility, I'm in the process of jettisoning LC-2, dumping Alice for Molly, so to speak... And I'm sitting on tenterhooks waiting for my friggin TT Buttpack now so I can see how well it works with everything, and where it'll ride, since I also ordered a second sustainment pouch for the "assault pack" ...

I kinda think that the idea of a dump pouch got popular after troops started using heavy armor and chest rigs to carry everything.
With the 30 lb vest pushing down on the belt they wanted a very low profile battle belt that wouldn't bind and dig. So the idea of a big pocket that can appear and then disappear seemed better in that context.

A dump pouch came into being because of all the urban fighting in Iraq. Where you were going through house to house so fast that resupply would be on the go in whatever building you would have secured. So keeping your mags handy is paramount.
