    I remember back in the late 80s around 1989 in Panama before the invasion. 7th Infantry Division (Light) out of Ft. Ord CA trained at the Jungle Operations Training Center at Ft. Sherman. They had 2 types. The first was a vertical chest rig that carried 6 mags and the rest was the slant 4 pockets like you have. To us ( OPFOR) for JOTC 1/508th INF (ABN) they looked cool. For Light Infantry was okay. But for us Airborne Guys we couldn't imagine how we could have worn these during a jump in a T-10 parachute harness and reserve? We can jump with the ALICE LBE looped inside our T-10s. After force on force with MILEs gear in the jungle we asked the 7th ID guys how they liked wearing these things. The Privates and NCOs said they hated them because just walking out in the jungle with them generated to much heat and it couldn't ventilate very well like the old ALICE LBEs. These guys had very bad heat casualties running around with them. We had to stop exercises because it was exhausting a bunch of their guys just wearing them. Very hard to carry their large ALICE rucksacks during road marches and we seen they had a hard time carrying them up hill. Again with many heat related injuries just wearing their LBV 88s. During the Panama Invasion the 7th ID did come back and back us up. Some soldiers had LBV 88s and regular LBEs with the PASGT Flak Jacket. Those were not much help because I wore one during combat. I like using the LBE much better because I was more used to it. I remember LBV 88s was not Army wide issue because Desert Storm guys even from high speed units used LBE for training and combat. Even after post Desert Storm when I was in Hawaii. The 25th ID liked using the LBE because it was much cooler during field training and live fire. Green Gear was still loved by the Army and Marines that it was still used in early Afghanistan and Iraq for combat. The M16 ammo pouch was excellent. You can ditch everything including the pistol belt and attach everything with ALICE clips onto the then new Interceptor Body Armor. Iraq 2006-08 I had two sets with me which was my own gear. I used a Blackhawk Chest Rigg and a Condor Chest Rigg. The FLICK OTV was okay. I liked my own chest rigs better for combat. The Condor was better because it had an inside map pouch and attached my IFAK, NODs, and do dads on my body armor. The Blackhawk was very basic bit comfortable when running and gunning. I even went down to just using my body armor as my carry all with the MOLLE loops a few times by attaching all my pouches on it. It was alright but I liked my Condor better because it fit so much better during combat. I hardly ever got prone during firefights unless I had to and got caught in the open. I had to shoot and move to get cover many times in Mosul, Tal Afar, Sadr City Baghdad, and other small towns I can't remember. I tried the LBV88 before Iraq and hated it. The straps would get loose, the nylon material would have "Furby Hair", stitches would come loose, the plastic broke often. I junked mines and turned it in. It sucked for me. The nylon in the LBVs were thinner than the bomb proof ALICE LBEs. That is my opinion and experience with the LBV 88. Totally YUCK!! For me that is.

    This is the system we used when I was in the Marines. We had the very same setup except we had a butt pack in between the canteen pouches and our med pouch was mounted right where the US in the middle of the back is. We also hung our bayonet from the belt. We didn't have the pistol mag pouches.

  • @baronedipiemonte3990

    I can see where that rig might be preferable in a straight out firefight, and IMHO it's way better all around than molle. In my day (90-96) we used a slightly modified version of the Marines 782 rig for comms and devices. For my "peaceful" needs now, I'll stick with that/alice rig. Its all about what works for YOU !

  • @pflugervillebushcraft8149
    @pflugervillebushcraft8149 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      That's my idea with this thing. I wanted to make my alice belt set up last longer in the field (aka carry more crap) so this rig freed up two triple mag pouches worth of space on the belt by putting the mags on my chest. Now I have more belt room for more survival and shelter based gear. Goal is to make it suitable for a rough day or two escapade

  • @895austin
    @895austin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    In the Marines we also trained to retain our mags. So if you are dropping your mags all over the place while you reload, you will eventually loose or run out of mags. When I was in, we used our cargo pocket to shove mags in. Now they have dump pouches.

    I wear mine with a modified ALICE pack but have removed the straps. I connected the side panels to the MOLLE shoulder straps and to the MOLLE kidney belt. Only downside is taking off the complete pack takes undoing four buckles, feel like a burlesque dancer. wouldn't do for a tactical situation but for hiking I love it.

    I had the LBV issued to me in Basic (2007) and I liked it. When I went to AIT and had to wear the more common LBE belt/suspender combo I found myself missing the vest. And even once out of that and actually getting MOLLE vests and pouches on my IOTV and plate carriers when deployed.. I found myself reminiscing slightly about my old LBV. Specifically I really like the LBVs chest rig design for the magazine.. up, but also to the side so they're out of the way, can still go prone, etc. Vs pouches strapped straight to my IOTV right on the bottom flap like most guys, or just trying to wear them up higher, but just straight vertical like that wasn't that great... I never quite found a good MOLLE solution (my last vest setup had a single row of magazines wrapped around trying to be as slim as possible, sometimes easier said than done with all the little extras that always seemed to find their way onto my vest lol)

    It's a neat setup to play with, but unless you were in the Army in 1995, it flat out sucks....Way too much "stuff" sewn together. It's like a HOT heavy, Girdle with bra-straps that you wish to hell you never got to wear. The enhanced version at least is made with mesh for a little ventilation, but If I were buying old school/retro load bearing gear I'd get some old Alice or German LBV....

    I have one and it kinda sucks. I mean, it works, but a regular chest rig does the same job but doesn't have all the excess straps and adjustments and extra material. Whenever I put it down it seems like it turns into a big tangle of a mess. Having the mag pouches angled puts them in a weird area, which was supposedly to make them easier to get to when prone, but a high chest rig is easy. Plus vertically oriented mags are easy to get to from both sides. Also makes wearing backpacks awkward.

    1.) The shoulder straps are too thick. The straps are to hold your ruck straps on top of them, or they WILL slide off.

      You can get 47 mags in but they won't stay. 0 retention. I did manage to get my 74 mags to work.

      Justin Bandy thanks buddy I was able to get my 47 mags in it but only 1 per mag holder then just bought some more mag holders and put them along the bottom side worked for me

    Anyone know plate carriers that work with these?

    • @doitriteak
      @doitriteak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interceptor or PASGT

    • @lukeprocida589
      @lukeprocida589 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I swore the PASGT didn't have plate inserts, and Interceptor's were really hard to find for a comparable price. Just looked it up tho, you're 100% right. Do you know of any other modern adaptations of these, or other carriers, because that's a lot more weight, no one really has LBV's in mind nowadays, but I think they are still pretty viable.
