Kudos for recognizing that Gavin doesn't just keep time for the song. He does everything he can to highlight the musical elements of whatever song he plays on. He doesn't overplay for show. He accents and just makes every song the best it can possibly be. A lot of Pineapple Thief songs are quite simple, but Gavin makes them into an event.
I never get tired of watching/listening to his drumming. Porcupine Tree had a great drummer with Chris Maitland. But Gavin kinda changed the band when he joined. It's just the way he plays. Same with The Pineapple Thief. One of my favorite performances of Gavin's is "No Man's Land" on The Pineapple Thief's album Your Wilderness. No drums for the first half of the song, but man, when they come in...
I'd have to add Raymond Hearn of Haken, too. Darby Todd is wonderfully creative. There are so many. Danny Carey will always have a spot on my top drummer lists.
Weird, sync out. All part of the KSCOPE family with Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief and King Crimson. 1 of 3 drummers in King Crimson, along with Pat Mastelotto. Pat is also in KSCOPE's O.R.k. which also has Porcupine Tree's bassist Colin Edwin. Also in the KSCOPE family is a talent singer Daniel Tompkins with his 6 octave range. Known as The Voice and in Tesseract which has an equally incredible drummer in Jay Postones. Hard to tell Jay and Gavin apart skillwse.
I recommend that you watch him performing his own composition "19 Days" th-cam.com/video/BFa__HYxNxU/w-d-xo.html I don't know how he is able to have such feel in his playing while always being absolutely locked in the pocket.
I just lost how many times i've watched this video. Gavin has unbelievable musicality, a taste of unspeakable quality.
The first time I saw this video I cried. And I play the piano.
Definitely one of the Best Drummers in the World…
Yes his fills, his rhythm are Basically unmatched by any other Drummer!
I think Gavin said it himself: It's everybodys job (in a band) to keep time. It's the drummers job to make the time interesting.
His dynamics, use of tone, fluidity, musicality, you name it, he excels everywhere.

THE CLOCK. Somebody had to fill Brufords shoes.

If you love this, check out Porcupine Tree, Way out of Here, live from Tilburg. Quintessential Gavin!
Having given it some considerable thought, I can recommend anything with Gavin playing 😊
Gav isn't just smooth. He's SMOOOOOOOOV.
Threatening War play through is another killer watch.
Yeah ya gotta react to VIRGIL DONATI..concerto for drums..vid
AMAZING..
Gavin Harrison is the tastiest drummer around. Baard Kolstad is among the most creative.
I'd have to add Raymond Hearn of Haken, too. Darby Todd is wonderfully creative. There are so many. Danny Carey will always have a spot on my top drummer lists.
Yes, so agree!! Love Leprous and Baard, but Gavin is so precise and tasteful in his drumming.
