This video is not from the latest tour. It's from 2008 when they still had Colin Edwin on bass and guest vocalist/guitarist John Wesley on stage with them. P-Tree will be a long and deep rabbit hole, Justin. Be warned. In its simplest terms you can break their career into two main phases: 1990-ish to 2001 was their psych-prog period where they sounded a lot like Pink Floyd and Radiohead. From 2002-2010 they adopted a nu-/prog-metal approach but still with lots of atmospherics and always melodic. This song is a showcase for both those eras, with the main song obviously more metal-driven while the coda is a throwback to late 90's albums like "Stupid Dream". You'd be interested to know that they recently reformed without Colin Edwin because Steven Wilson was playing the bass on the demos that he recorded with Gavin Harrison. So their latest comeback album -- Closure/Continuation -- is VERY bass and drums-oriented.

And all along the way he was producer and engineer for opeth's biggest selling album Blackwater Park, he had his own ambient side project Base Communion and IEM, write and sang on Blackfield albums, as well as remixing classic rock albums and making an album with Mikael Åkerfeldt in the form of Storm Corrosion. Plus helping with no-man and various other projects. He's a machine.

Justin I discovered PT through Neil Peart from Rush. I was sitting in the Core State center in Philadelphia during the Snakes and Arrows tour and Neil had the song " Trains" playing with the house music. He said it was his current favorite song by them. So naturally I started looking into them and have never looked back. They are my current number 1 group since Rush retired.

This is really the only Porcupine Tree song I've heard in its entirety. I know Gavin as one of the trio of drummers with King Crimson when it tours these days (saw them twice) and as a drummer Bill Bruford has said he really likes. I know Wilson more as someone who is re-mastering basically all of the prog from 1969 and 1985. This is a good song, but I find the slow ending to be a bit discontinuous from the earlier movements. I appreciate the vocal work in that section, but it seems a bit like they just added a slow song to the end of a medium-length song. Agree that the keyboard work really adds layers and texture to the work.

I’ve always felt the last part of out of place but it fits the story a bit as you think about pills and making people into zombies. It’s how I look at it anyway.
Glad you liked it. Wasn’t sure if you would. I mean, I know it’s AMAZING musicianship but it’s a long song with so many parts.
As I mentioned in my request, the first solo was played by Alex lifeson on the studio version it’s a different solo so worth checking out.
When I found these guys from my Rush pandora station, it opened up an entire huge catalog for stuff from Steven Wilson with his PT stuff, solo stuff, Blackfield and other stuff. Even realized he performs with Opeth on some stuff and I’m a huge fan of them.
I’m sure others will recommend more songs from these guys. They were broken up for like 15 years but just released a new album. Sadly, the bass player did not return and the guy singing background and guitar is not on tour this time either. Some call it Porcupine three rather than tree.
I wonder how emotional you’d get watching certain videos from Steven Wilson. His song Routine is a tough one based on the subject matter and the video that goes with it. Hmm. Maybe another request coming your way soon.
And thank you for all your advice on bass stuff. It’s been super helpful and it’s great watching my son get better with all the stuff he’s doing.
Thanks for reacting to this!!! Much appreciated!!!

Oh, yes. Great to see PT on the channel. I made a request for Steven Wilson's solo stuff a while back, before I knew at was a paid for thing ☺ Would be great if someone would request Home Invasion/Regret #9 or Refuge. 😜
Also, just mentioning Fish's Credo. Been listening to that song a lot recently. Maybe the kind of thing your audience might enjoy?

I went to college in Boston as well (during a different decade, im sure - hint: Power Windows 😊) Were college audiences fun gigs in your working years after Berklee, or did you feel like moving on to a new chapter?

Boston was cool, just sucks in the winter a lot. No gigs, freezing, shoveling snow for parking spaces.. you know. I shoulda left sooner (stayed for 9 years). I didn't have a plan to leave though I knew I would at some point and I liked what I was doing at the time. Having the Berklee and NEC music students nearby was great for working on music and playing, jamming, practice, getting better, etc. I had a rehearsal studio next to Fenway Park where we held multiple jam sessions a week that I recorded. Jazz stuff. One of those recordings was an original song that ended up being recorded by Earth Wind & Fire 6 or so years later.

Great song! You should try Fear of a Blank Planet if you havent already done one.Theres a reaction on TH-cam from 4 years ago and to me it was an embarrasing reaction that didn't give that song the respect it deserves. Would love to see your reaction.

    Here's a link to a live version from 2005: th-cam.com/video/O5nAA_QXBPY/w-d-xo.html
I do believe that you'll enjoy it as much if not even more than Anesthetize.
And I would very much enjoy watching your reaction to that. :)

I'm a big fan of this band. This song is incredible. However as a drummer I have to say something that will probably get flack. I've listened to it several times and have to conclude Gavin overplays on this song at least in the middle section. Those constant 32nd note and sixtuplet tom/bass drum fills becoming an actual drum chart just gets distracting to the vibe, its bolted in without organic contribution to the sound. I feel like I'm hearing a fusion drummer's instructional video, albeit amazing and perfect technique. Just not appropriate musical choices to my ears.

Interesting that people who play the instruments get stronger vibes. I've never properly played an instrument so I guess ignorance is bliss when I listen to a live performance.

Gavin's drumming is controlled awesomeness in this brilliant performance. Just killer! (except for the shit ad in the middle of the video).

@@JustinPanariello Beauty, I have a vintage model from Squier. The original Fender is a bit out of my price range and mainly for my non/playing it is enough for now.
