you do look great Becky out of 36 eggs that I put in my incubator 29 hatched they are doing good and I love your channel I give my birds any type of meat that has gone past it for human consumption thanks for the great videos
Thank you for all the helpful information! I noticed my smallest hen was missing feathers near her tail. I now realize it was her doing it to herself because I watched her pick a feather off the ground and eat it. Weird for sure. I will give her some meat protein asap and hopefully she will get better. Now I worry the others will pick at her little bald spot too. Gonna check out your coop plans now. Thanks again
This video has a lot of great information. My chickens have been eating feathers, so started feeding them rice. It hasn’t helped, so I’m going to feed them some eggs and tuna.
I know I'm very late to comment. Just found this video while researching why some of my 5 week old chicks are eating feathers. Thank you for this very helpful information! They are on a high protein chick starter and I do give them lots of meal worms but I guess it's not enough. I have a lot of beef heart in my freezer that I got from my local butcher for $1/lb so am going to mince that up for them today. Also planning to build a worm farm and soldier fly bin for a continual cheap source of protein, as well as a way to deal with kitchen waste that I can't feed the chickens. This video got you a new subscriber! :-)
Thank you so much for your help. I had one getting picked on now I no why .I put her in a dog cage and I let her run free when the others are put up trying to give her time to heal.
They are So fluffy and beautiful! It really shows how you love them & all the care you pour into them. Lucky Chickens! Beautiful eggs too I bet! ; ) I wish I could hug one. Bet they would NOT like it!
They'll eat mice too. My friend, who up until this year was having a mouse invasion problems in his chicken house by winter. He would kill mice, but also witnessed his hens catching and eating mice. He had cement floors installed and ended his problems this year.
I'm so happy that you made this video I never knew about them being meat eaters I've always giving them veggies and of course they are free range, but still feed them chicken food, but this video is very informational
Hi Becky! In addition to other things, I feed my chickens feeder fish from my local pet store in a water dish. This gives them protein, fatty acids, and it occupies their time.
That explains a whole lot for me. My chickens look bald because they keep pecking at each other. I could noy understand it. Thanks for the useful info and tip!
I have chickens and I just learned something new! Never saw or heard of feather eating ...wow! Love your channel Becky keep up the good work;)...p.s. you look AMAZING good for you;)
You are looking so good ! I think 2019 must be the year when I take myself in hand and spruce up my appearance. Since my husband passed away I kinda lost interest being the best I could be. You are an incentive.
You are too good Madam Becky! I am new to chicken keeping and have recently acquired 3 of them (2+one rooster) who are about 3 months old. They don't seem to like what I'm feeding them. They refuse chicken feed altogether. Green they like and a very wee bit of cooked rice, bread and kitchen scraps. But they look without appetite. Yet they seem to be healthy. What do you advise? I really enjoy your videos (and you as a charming person too!) and it's after watching them so often that I decided to buy those chicken. Their coop is well made, perch and all. We do not get worm meal and all the good stuff you people get in Mauritius. So what do you advise?
Hi dear we ignored feather pecking thinking they were molting until recently we caught the main culprit We isolate her from pecking others as well as we isolated most damaged ones too. I wonder whether this can cause stress to damaged one because one of the most injured one stop laying apparently she was laying inside got infected and we have to put her down We give as much proteins still...how about antipecking glasses will they work Thanks
Becky I have been given many many pkgs of different kinds of dried beans, kidney, pinto, great northern, black, garbonzo you name it. I've been soaking them over night and then cooking them until tender in water no salt but I do pour some hot bacon grease on top of the cooked beans that have been drained. I know it's not animal protein but it is protein and they seem to absolutely love them. My chickens are teenagers and seem to look beautiful and poofy and healthy. Would this bean protein do as good as animal protein? Would like to know what you think. I feed them the beans at a rate of about 1/4 c per chicken once a week. I do give table scrap meat in addition to this.
How often and how much do you feed them animal proteins to actually make a difference? I have 16 hens and 2 roosters. I currently give them 5 hand full of meals worm twice a week.
I feed my chickens grower feed all the time. No matter their age. Plus table scraps including meat. And when they’re molting I give them black oil sunflower seeds. Never had a problem with chickens eating feathers.
My chickens LOOOOVE them some tuna fish! They turn into tiny dinosaurs. I let them free range, so I give it to them maybe twice a month right now. But they're still little. That might increase as they get bigger or when winter comes.
I had a lady at a hardware feed store laughed at me when I asked her what chickens layed double yolk eggs. She ... baby all young chickens will lay double yolk eggs ... you just have to increase their protein.
is it possible for mice to eat and pluck feathers form chickens i have almost all under side and some back ends missing feathers long little bit top head missing feathers i spotted some mice running away when i went out to check on my chickens in the morning and open up the nesting spot and how do you re pall mice with out using bad traps long without poisons
Hi! ☺ I'm watching your video about what to do if chickens are eating feathers. I haven't noticed mine doing that, but I have recently noticed many feathers in their house. I started feeding them mealworms last year. Not for the reason you mentioned because I wasn't aware of that. I just give it to them for a treat along with sunflower seeds. It is amazing how CRAZY they are over the treats. I was wondering if you could tell me how much to give them. I have been giving approximately 1 1/4 cups of each, daily for 3 chickens. Thank you very much! Have a Very, Very, Very Homey Christmas on your Homestead!! ☺☺😎😎
I have desi hen for last 3,4 years and she never molted her feathers. And i have 1 RIR commercial and she is 1.25 yrs and passed 1 fall season but did not molted. is this normal or not. My RIR was wet in the rain and since then she stopped laying eggs. Pls. advise what to do...
What happens when you notice 5 of your 6 hens are missing feathers around their butts and you witnessed the one not missing any pecking at the others. Is she being a bully? I actually saw her pecking at the chest feathers on another hen so I’m pretty sure it’s her. She’s also the only one who seems to have a problem when pecking at food on the ground. She misses it and wants to be fed out of a cup! A usually will put a pile of scratch grain or whatever it is so she has a better chance of getting it. Vision problem?
I would throw mealworms in my backyard, dried mealworms I mean, and I would also scatter their feeds in as well so the chickens get balanced diets and get their exercise as well.
Hey Becky - love your stuff. After watching this video, I gave my chickens 2 cans of wild caught salmon which is cheap at Walmart. They gobbled it up like right now. How many times a week do you think I should feed them the animal protein Summer and Winter? Lots of bugs around in the Summer here in the panhandle. My Barred Rocks love sugar ants . The austrolorps and Orpingtons don't pay much attention to them though. LOL.
I have 20 hens 2 roosters. I have one hen who has hardly any feathers, she is the only one like this. Also she has been like this for about 6-8 months. What should I do?
Just came across this video. I was going to start adding soy meal to tge feed mix for extra protein. I read somewhere that that works. What are your thoughts on that?
New chick mom here. I just got 1 month old chickens & they have some bald spots & are constantly pecking and nibbling on themselves... They also chirp/make a purring sound all day/night. They also have some bald spots. I didn't see any thing moving on them but could they lice or something... I'm worried! Are they to young to feed live meal worms to? Thanks♡
They love turkey, chicken, rabbit carcasses etc after you get your meat off. They will pick at these for days. I have done this alot and no issues have came up because of it. I have white leghorns and they are a vicious breed.

I did this by feeding by two flocks them at the same time.. I had a temporary wire fence in my garden that I used to separate them so they saw each other all the time and were able to get used to seeing the new flock but they were safe and couldn't get too close to hurt one another.. I would through down their feed at each side of the fence so they were all feeding together, they were all more concerned about the food than the pecking order .. I did this for about 2 weeks then brought them in together.. They were absolutely fine... ❤️
I get SWARMED in summer with crickets, grasshoppers, katydids and more. We’ve been on this farm about 2 years and there’s still so much to do, so we haven’t been able to let the girls free range yet, on account of the hawks and bald eagles that patrol our woods. I plan to set up a hawk/owl net soon, which apparently are very effective at deterring aerial predators. That’ll be great for the chickens and my crops.
I fed my chickens a balanced diet including meal worms and they never ate feathers. Also cat food has chicken in it, it's kind of taboo to feed cat food to hens for that reason.

also note that there is no pecking order. all are living very socially. eating together..playing together..roaming all over together. they are free ranged but they stick together & dont go too far
They are not molting your two roosters are breeding them too often. The roosters are making the back feathers fall out where they stand on the hens backs when they are breeding them. Seperate the roosters.
Hi Becky! I have a chick related Question. I had a chick that was turning into a bitty chicken, it had chick fuzz still on its head and its body under the wings. He used to live inside with me because the flock tried to peck him to death because all his siblings had died and his momma chicken was about to lay new eggs so she left him. So I brought him inside and would take him outside almost everyday for hours. A couple days after I got him, I noticed a little tiny booboo on his knee, the back of his leg. I thought it'll heal on its own, but a few days later it had turned into a big swelling of maroon frozen blood. I started putting Pyodine (antiseptic) on it after that. But do you know why his injury kept getting bigger and bigger because he wasn't being pecked by chickens anymore and no chicken had pecked it wound during the period i noticed it and it got bigger. I put bandage on it first but he kept pecking it to get it off and in doing so he gave himself more teeny tiny booboos on his leg. Also, he died of Newcastle's. Because we are first time chicken owners and didn't know that they need to be vaccinated. 💔
Mine love sardines. In the cold weather I save the oil and mix in with left over rice etc. the next day. Meal worms are easy to raise.
Oh Becky, you teach me something new every day. Thank you for being there to help me along my journey with my two pet chickens.

Hey Becky , how do chickens know that the feathers are rich in protein and how do they know that they need protein?? Are they that Smart??
Should we stop pest control on our property backyard?

Sad news. My ducks both got eaten. I let Mario sleep in the cabin and I didn't close the duck door good enough😓😥

Food pellets for pond fish, catfish/koi, are high in protein

I feed it all the time, just moreso in the winter☀️❤️☀️

Space is a big one if your not allowing enough room 4 sq foot inside 10 outside
Also adding grit like sand cause they look for roughage
Is the salt in tuna, sardine cans and table meat scraps bad for the chickens?
It will work like antibiotic so no issue to use
Can you feed sardines to baby chicks? (Over 2 month old)
Hey beaky what do I feed my chickens so they can lay yellow yolk in the eggs they are always coming out white
I'm assuming you mean the yolks are pale yellow? To darken the yolks feed more greens, like weeds, grass, or even spinach. Also marigold flowers will darken the yolks. As well as darkening them these things will also make your eggs more nutritious.
