What I think it did is that it avoided mistakenly translating something to a sexual meaning to avoid awkward speech to text accidents. Google translate is defaulted to not translate or realise bad words unless you manually type it in.

tbh chinese is an absolute pain to translate electronically. even google isn't quite there yet. this'd work far better with other european languages like french, german, spanish etc.

Marcus W Translating any of the Gaelic languages is never good because not enough people use them as their first/only language. Companies like Google focus on the bigger languages like German or French, and have less if any dedicated development for say, Scots Gaelic or Irish.

It's probably because the system is using literal translations and some grammar/syntax doesn't translate. Also there are words and phrases that either don't exist in other languages or don't translate the same thing as to what the speaker is trying to say. Example, a US english speaker might say the phrase 'I have got to get the hell out of dodge'. Which means I have to leave a place or situation as soon as possible. While an extract translation of the phrase might sound like this, 'I have got to leave the underworld/afterlife/death of a US city in the American midwest.' See how easily the phares meaning can be lost in translation.

Fun fact for anyone curious about computer translation! Many computer scientists in the field believe that natural language translation may be so difficult as to be an AI complete problem. Meaning that they think a human level, general purpose AI may be necessary to have convincing computer translation.
Dude, with the way Nvidia stepped up their game in the AI/Deep learning market, we should be able to see a fully fledged AI and deep learning based translator in the next few years.

Serious comment: The Chinese->English translation in chat mode is actually really really accurate. It's obvious that the team developing this had a lot more chance to tweak the app's ability to understand Chinese than it's ability to understand English. On that note, this device's foundation is solid and just need more tweaking, and given the opportunity, is going to become something amazing.
The fact is, Dennis failed to realize that his Chinese got translated near perfectly into English. The review is unfair to say that the base concept is lacking, I think it works fine, the team making it probably just don't have the resource to hire a whole bunch of white people to tweak their coding.

Or that English is near impossible to accurately translate to other languages on the fly simply because of our structure vs how other languages are structured unless you have a human to "interpret" the meaning.

one big thing is it wont translate some phrases, idioms, or slangs. you can use one of these and just speak very simple, direct, and short sentences and it should work fine.

Or use Google Translate. Their app has a conversation mode. You don't have to hold a button; it just picks up one of the two languages you choose and translates it to the other. You can also download a language in case you're traveling to a country where you may not have Wi-Fi. Also, you don't have to ask a stranger to stick a thing in their ear. It's also free.
You should compare it to using Google Translate speech mode
Still early generations of this kind of tech. I can see this kind of thing advancing far enough that basic cross-language conversations become very easy in the future, and could be extremely useful while traveling. But, a machine will probably never be able to effectively translate things like dialects, slang and whatnot. And there are just some things that do not translate.
diznoid I would think it would work better with something like Spanish to English. I think Chinese is one of the more difficult ones. Even for the translate app from Google.

Yeah, this would work extremely well with languages within the same family, like the Romance Languages or languages that aren't (Germanic English and Romance Spanish) but share an alphabet and many other things.

Honestly the entire idea seems great for tourists like I’m going to japan and learning Japanese in a timely manner is not exactly easy so having something like this to just get the point across of what I’m hearing would be worth it

Vixtinction which version? For almost every language there is a form of sign language. American sign language for example uses 1hand for the alphabet while British sign language uses 2 hands foir its alphabet.

I always get ad’s for this little stick and when you press the button and speak into it, it translates it into the other language of the other person. When they speak into it, it translates it back into the other language.

When I was in Brazil a few years back, I just used Google Translate to communicate with some people. It worked surprisingly well and since we both knew the translations were not perfect, we were able to relate more.

I know both Chinese and English so I think this thing worked fairly well when Dennis speaks. It didn't get what Linus is speaking because he spoke to casually and fast.
