Joining me on the pod, are all the policy chops you could ever want. Our own Herle Burly Budget Lock-up! THE policy panel is here making their 4th appearance on the show: Dr. Jennifer Robson, Sean Speer and Tyler Meredith.
I’ll just remind you of their bona fides…
Jennifer has held senior roles in policy development and research with the Federal Government. She’s now Program Director and Associate Professor of Political Management at Carleton University. Her primary areas of research are at the intersection of household finances and the design and implementation of social policy.
Sean is a former senior economic advisor to Prime Minister Harper. Today, he’s Senior Fellow at U of T’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He’s also a Founder and Editor-at-Large at the very excellent, TheHub dot ca.
Tyler is the former Head of Fiscal and Economic Policy for Prime Minister Trudeau and Ministers of Finance, Chrystia Freeland and Bill Morneau. Today, he’s a Founding Partner at Meredith/Boessenkool Policy Advisors.

I’m sure this won’t at all be a tongue bath of how great a budget it is and how it’s a phenomenal idea to tack on $50 billion more to the debt.

As a 20 something millennial who was supposedly 'in focus' for this budget, I am extremely pessimistic about Canada long term and have recently obtained Irish citizenship so my wife and I can move. None of these line items feel like they will move the needle in a real way.
To put it simply, I feel the social contract has been broken and I want an actual policy shift (creating a sunset date for the personal home capital gain exemption, simplifying tax collection, simplifying bureaucracy, building better cities...). This budget seems like they are desperate for my vote and I can assure you, it isn't coming.
    Greqt show guys.

In response to Sean's example of extending the Canada child benefit for six months after the death of a child, it shows you the value of personal stories in changing policy. While I agree that the previous situation was likely not an act of outright government malice (one hopes), it does demonstrate potential bureacratic stupidity and ignorance of human experience.

Always enjoy the economic episodes and conversation. That said the overall direction and tone of this conversation was just depressing. Dark days ahead for the younger generations.

Patiently heard the whole show. Some good valid points however I cannot stop myself from being sceptical in thinking thatI’ll whatever “good” this budget has proposed is just election year narrative only to be pulled back if government comes into power again. The eye wash over the past 8 years regarding the amount of every policy that was meant for good but went south is just way too much not to have a looming doubt. Evident that some of the speakers are trying quite hard to dress up the fact that the Canada I came into 15 years ago has lost its competitive edge and the future is looking truly grim. Regardless good discussion overall and always enjoy Hurley burley shows

More accurate episode title: "Three Liberals chat about how the debt and deficit is all good while Speer sits quietly and barely speaks a word"
    What a waste of time.

Would have been a good time to tear into Kory as well. Speer was underwhelming this episode.

Bigger government, just not this Liberal-NDP government. Way too little, way too late. "Sunny ways, my friends, sunny ways."

Millennials like me are screwed. These policy changes should have been done 20 years ago when home prices started to cost more then 3 times the average income. The best we can do now is try to build something better for Gen Alpha and beyond.

they f'd up yes, but another factor in all this was the monetary policy response to the 2000 and 2008 recessions/stock market crashes. In order to fend off the recessions The West took interest rates to 0%, and the result was all assets ballooned in value - stocks, bonds, and of course, real estate.

If you want fairness in the sense of asking boomers to pay more, while providing millennials a hand up. Seems like the trivial answer would be to tax capital gains on Primary residence while making interest paid on Mortgages tax deductible.
This would make boomers pay tax on their windfall gains from the property bubble, while giving many thousands back to first time homebuyers.

Tell Tyler to stop looking out the window. He seems disinterested.
